Is it similar to this "My Space" that I hear all the kids talking about these days?

To join
To join Facebook (which didn't come out until after we graduated college), you need access to a college (.edu) email address and sign up at www.thefacebook.com

If you are still in school and go to a well attended university, you will gain access.  If you are no longer in school you might try your old school email address just in case...but I think they send a confirmation email.  Graduate school emails also work...

Once you have a facebook profile you can join Burnt Orange Naiton (a public group for now).  For those not familiar with facebook, it is basically legalized stalking which I had never heard of until I worked at camp this summer with younger college students.

Are groups limitted to people at your own school?

by Lincoln on Dec 9, 2005 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Facebook help page explains
"Facebook groups at each school exist as separate, exclusive entities. Why? Because we would like to preserve the feel of a small, closely networked community. This is one of the things that helps differentiate us (i.e. makes us more kick ass) from some similar sites, and we are very much concerned with maintaining that element."

But I have never used it.
What is the point of Joining?

by Wells on Dec 9, 2005 3:16 PM CST reply actions

No point
unless you want to be the only member of the UMD Burnt Orange Nation Group (created by Wells)

Facebook FAQ
Apparently nobody is young enough to understand Facebook but me - so I'll try to explain the point of it

In short, there is no point.  Facebook allows you to create a network of your friends, every student has their own little profile and you go about adding friends into your network.  Facebook groups are a group of students who share a common interest, and the range of groups spans everything (including the turtle pond).  You can add people from different schools into your social network, but you cannot join a group outside of the ones at your school.  For example, I can't join UMD's BON group, and unless you have a utexas.edu email account, you can't join the UT BON group I just created.

Facebook is intended for people to expand their social networks, but often results in people obsessing over anonymously stalking others.  It has basically ruined your high school reunion, because everyone from high school has Facebooked you and knows which college you go to, what you look like, and where you work.

I can't figure out how to invite you to the damn thing. I don't know if it's exclusive to Texas people or what. Dumb.

by Peter Bean on Dec 9, 2005 3:31 PM CST reply actions

Exclusive
as stated above, it's exclusive.  No UNT students allowed.

by Lincoln on Dec 9, 2005 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

Denton
Yall don't dog on Little D. UNT is where the all-time classic Necessary Roughness was filmed and where Stone Cold Steve Austin went to college.

by TR on Dec 9, 2005 3:53 PM CST reply actions

Stone COLD?!!
Stone Cold Steve Austin went to college. How lame. That totally ruins his image.
Destroyer!

SCSA didn't graduate. His degree is from the school of hard knocks. He also played football here, stompin' mudholes everywhere on the field and then walking them dry.
