Conradt

I know that not many people who read this board even acknowledge other Texas sports outside of football, spring football, recruiting, men's hoops, men's hoops recruiting and the College World Series (but only when Texas is in it) ...

But for those of you not aware, Texas women's hoops coach Jody Conradt tied Dean Smith for second on the all-time college basketball wins list with 879 in the team's 71-70 win over Kansas State today.

Pat Summit - 900
CONRADT - 879
Dean Smith - 879

How does she rank among the active UT coaches?

Fifth (maybe fourth)
Augie, Reese, and Mack are all better coaches than Jody.  I have no problem saying that.

It's not that Jody is a bad coach, or that I'm not particularly fond of women's basketball.  Rather it's that we have some really really good coaches.

Women's Basketball
Conradt was more of a pioneer than the other coaches and enjoyed her greatest success when the women's game was still relatively young and first developing.  As more and more young women decide that playing basketball is something they want to do (and can do) at the college level and perhaps in the WNBA, other schools have been able to develop their women's program and diluted UT's success in the sport.  Again, Conradt is a pioneer and the wins have pilled up over a long career, but Pat Summit is younger and surpassed Conradt in wins a while back.  What Mack Brown has done in a sport that incompasses all regions of the country and has done so for generations, is more impressive.

Did Martha Burke put you up to this?
This ought to set off a firestorm, but please take Dean Smith's name off that list...I take nothing away from Jody and Pat's accomplishments, but it's just not the same as what Dean Smith did. It's like telling Ricky Williams and Ron Dayne to take a seat behind some guy in Division III because he technically rushed for more yards than they did.

Regardless, congrats to Jody, she's practically an institution now. They should name the Drum after her.

the coaches
Each has done something brilliant

Barnes - turned a football-only school into a basketball powerhouse (including a Final 4)

Brown - string of 9- and 10-win seasons, even had arguably one of the best teams of all time

Garrido - all-time wins leader in college baseball. Won the CWS in 4 different decades

Conradt - 879 career wins, a national title and several top-ranked teams (second only to Summit)

Reese - Eight national titles, 24 consecutive conference titles and tons of Olympians

All still bring the top recuits and get the job done with them. Reese and Conradt are pioneers in their sports. Garrido is a living legend and Brown is slowly becoming the next Bobby Bowden. If Barnes makes another Final Four then he'll certainly draw more praise.

Compare that list...
... to the coaching staffs at OU, and you realize how lucky we are. Stoops - the arrogance Sampson - the mouth Coale - the Poodle Cochell - the racist (I know, he's gone) Swim Coach - none You also have characters like Mangino, Snyder, Knight, Franchione, sprinkled throughout the Big XII. When you add in coaches like Jerritt Elliott, Bev Kearney, and Connie Clark, it's a pretty compelling story. Class acts, every one of them, great recruiters, great mentors, good people. Not a one of them would ever cause embarassment to our beloved institution.

That's why
I get a little perplexed when people rag on DeLoss Dodds.  The guy has had a big hand in assembling that class crew of coaches.  I tip my hat to him.

DeLoss
Folks shouldn't rag on him any more, but things were pretty bad there for a while. Texas football was damn near a joke for a decade-and-a-half. The way Coach Gus left didn't sit well with folks and Penders almost destroyed the entire hoops program. DeLoss was able to right the ship in a big time way, though. I'd really like to know what happened. Did he start listening to the right people? If so, who? I'd love someone to write a really good behind-the-scenes book about the rebirth of men's athletics at UT over the last 10 years or so.
