CFN 2006 Preseason Rankings
Spotted this article on the College Football News website this morning.

Seems to be more in line with our thinking vs. what we've seen on ESPN.
I thought the analysis was fairly good overall. This is one of the few articles that I feel correctly assesses the 'Horns changes next year for the Fiesta Bowl.

Thank You
Exactly. BON should hold this to anyone and everyone who ranks us anything but #1.

Agree
I don't see how Texas isn't the team to beat. We'll beat tOSU at home, then have three tests in the Big 12 for our shot to repeat. Frankly, I don't think it's a longshot.
This defense is going to be sick. I'm planning for Tempe.

My favorite line
I can't wait to see what the running game will do.
I think Chizik is going to want that #1 ranking for his defense. You thought last year was a mean defense? I think this year's is going to be just as stout, and a little more ferocious.

Agreed
Chizik will want that #1. Why do you think our starting D played deep into every game, including routs? Chizik breeds pride, with special respect to scoring defense stats, and he instills this pride in his players. It would not surprise me if our overall defense is even stronger next season.

The media
Link, speaking for myself, but guessing I represent a wider opinion, we are all irked that no one can accept that Texas was and is an extremely solid football team. We heard all year that we were only undefeated because the Big 12 was down (false) and then after the Rose Bowl we hear that we were only that good because Vince Young is the greatest CFB player ever, with any other QB it would have been 38-0.
I could care less about USC. Before last season, I barely thought about them except that I hoped Texas would get a chance to play them and prove its strength. Next year? USC again will not matter to me unless Texas matches up against them at some point. USC has a good football team with a great tradition, and as long as they don't start playing regularly in Norman, OK with "OU" on their helmets I will hold no hatred in my heart for the Trojans.
The fact is, a lot of people around the country hate Texas because of what it is (big), who lives there (proud Texans), and what it represents (un abashed freedom and capitalism). Inside of Texas, a lot of people hate UT because generally the smartest Texans go to school there, more often that not its football team is the best, and it has ungodly amounts of money (or did, anyway). We UT fans have always dealt with that double whammy of dislike and are a bit sensitive about it.
Anyway, we're basking in our moment in the sun. When we win the Championship next year is when the crap is really going to hit the fan. We'll be freakin' insufferable in our dynasty...

I Love UT Football
Look at our public schools, at our disgusting prison system, at our health care dilemma or inept state government. We represent something, but it certainly isn't freedom.

Hmm
As for your second statement, I fail to see how any of the problems you mention affect the freedom that Texas has and continues to represent. The gay-marriage ban or some of the church-state separation issues, perhaps.
Anyway, I am an arrogant SOB, but that's all personal. I'm simply proud of Texas because it's a great place and the people are some of the best people in the United States. And of course, I'm very proud of the University of Texas because a) I got a first-rate education there at rock bottom prices and b) their athletic teams are superior.

Texas...
That's symptomatic actually. That's always been a Texas trait. We're perceived as arrogant because we revel in complaints about our arrogance.
At any rate, there's nothing sweeter than rubbing their noses in it...
and btw- I might argue about the "smartest" comment; what about Rice?

Oh, that's right
if only Vince Young could throw, Texas might have a good shot at doing something this year. Their offense will be OK but will ultimately flounder at pivotal moments under his awkward delivery and Mack's knack for choking.
Fast forward to post-Rose Bowl victory:
Too bad Vince is leaving. If he had stayed, Texas might have a shot at doing something next year. But, instead of making a run at a repeat, they'll flounder under the poor leadership of a new QB.
I'm sick of this doubting Texas bullshit.
