Regarding life A.V. (After Vince)

Mack: "We have 15 starters back next year and our expectations today remain the same as before Vince's decision. We are defending champions and will move forward."

Texas fans, fear not. We are Texas, and now that means we are one of the teams that will (not hopes to) contend for the national championship every single season.

We don't rebuild, we reload. I can't wait for spring football to see Colt McCoy, who redshirted last season, and Jevan Snead, who plans to enroll in school this month and participate in spring drills.

Colt
I'm a Colt homer after living in West Texas the past couple years, but I have no qualms about handing this team over to McCoy next year. True, he's a small-school QB, but he's athletic, he's got great poise in the pocket, and he's got a great touch when he puts the ball in the air. He just knows whether to put some air under it or zip it in. He's a better decision-maker than Chris Simms ever was. It may take him a bit to get up to speed with the D-I college game, but once he finds his rhythm, he'll be like Chance Mock with a better arm.

Looks
I don't know dimp about Colt's play, but I do know he's a goober-looking kid if I ever saw one.  That inspires confidence in me because it suggests that any ego he has comes completely from his talent and not his looks and he'll be less likely to take plays (or, god help us, games) off because he's too cool for school.

Rumors
are flying around that Greg Davis might go work for Kubiak and the Texans.

Oh good lord, let it be true.

I'm ready to see something new from the offense. Davis' three page play book aren't doing it for me anymore.

Time to bring in some fresh ideas.

re: Colt
"A better decision-maker than Chris Simms ever was" makes him a stronger-armed Chance Mock?

Give me a break.

re: re: Colt
No, being a better decision-maker than Chris Simms doesn't, in and of itself, indicate that he will be a stronger-armed Chance Mock. In case you didn't read the rest of my post, I mentioned other attributes. His mobility compares favorably to Mock's -- remember, before Vince came riding in, Chance was poised to be the scrambling, option-running anti-Simms -- and, from what I've seen, his downfield passing is stronger than Mock's.

G Davis
Why all the hate to the offensive coordinator? Texas was top five in just about every offensive category fathomable ... AND they won conference and BCS titles

Does it matter if it's a three-page playbook or 350-page book as long as the team keeps winning?

GD
"Why all the hate to the offensive coordinator? Texas was top five in just about every offensive category fathomable ... AND they won conference and BCS titles"

What scares me about GD is that it takes the Ricky Williams, Roy, Cedric and VY's of Texas football to make his offense work.
They don't exactly grow on trees.
When talent is down, like when Mock was the QB, the offense required an injection of All-Planet talent to take over. The success of the offense had nothing to do with play calling.

He doesn't know how to attack with a passing game. His play calling doesn't take advantage of the team speed or talent.
Stoops and others have gone on record stating that they knew what was coming from the offense. Mike Stoops said point blank that Davis is predictable. Hell, even a novice like my self new what plays Davis would call in the RRS.

Take a look at his record and offensive stats at previous schools before he joined the blue-chip factory known as Mack Brown.
Davis has a history of being a loser, until he met Mack.

Winning a national championship gives everyone on the staff, roster and athletic department a free pass for life from me. If Greg leaves, I wish him all the best.

UT needs another VY
This may come off as homerism (and it is) but consider this:

USC's defense was considered horrible before the rose bowl.  VY was incredible, and racked up 400+ yards of total offense, 200 of those rushing yards.  That means UT's 4 other  backs combined for less than 100 yards.  VY also can pass well, and racked up 200 more yards through the air.

USC's horrible D held UT's core of running backs well, and although the secondary was bad, its always been bad.  UT's receivers didn't light it up any more than Fresno States'.  UT needs a damn good QB to step in if they want to be competitive, because the rest of the team was held in check by a mediocre USC defense.

Ryan Peri-peri-not-gonna-play
What a sad story for Ryan Perrilloux, now stuck behind two Jr. LSU QBs when he could have been plugged right in as a RS Freshman this season at UT.  McCoy and Snead will be fine, simply needing to avoid costly mistakes as opposed to making plays on their own.  They have plenty of talent around them.  [Link, the UT running back's (Selvin and Jamaal) were averaging more than 6 yads per carry, slightly more than Bush, so I would not say they were held in check, unless you are comparing their numbewrs to VY's 10.5 per carry.]

link
take your sour grapes and homerism elsewhere, please. Saying that texas needs VY to be successful is like saying that USC's offense is going to suck without Bush, Leinart and White. We all know that both teams have tremendous talent coming back and will reload just fine. And for the record, no one, at least no one with any brains, said that USC had a horrible defense. Just not as good as last year and definitely not as good as Texas'. VY took control of the game because that's his style. I know you saw what Jamall Charles could do with the ball in his hands. Next year he's going to be the next great UT back and I predict at least 1,500 if he stays healthy. With Ramonce as the change of pace guy (you remember his sick 30 yard TD run, right?) and that clutch core of receivers that tore up the USC secondary to the tune of 267, the Texas offense will be just fine.

Linky..
What happened to "give Pete 4 weeks and he can make gold out of crap"??? If it aint broke dont fix it. If we wanted to run our backs more we could have. Its The QB's option, and Vince called his number all night. BTW he made the right call.

Link You're Retarded
If Vince hand't had the ball in his hands every single play, Charles, S. Young, Taylor et. al would have put up huge numbers.  In fact, all three backs averaged over 5 yds per carry, they simply didn't get the touches necessary to put up huge numbers.  Had they gotten the ball more, they would have continued to amass solid yardage against your shitty defense.  Use your head son.

Note that
We only play the fight song when we score, which was frequently.  Remember that 12 point deficit UT faced w/ 5 minutes left?  Thats why you heard that "awful fight song" so much.

12 point deficit...

One song...
The only song I can attest to is the one being played when there was a 3-point deficit with 0:00 on the game clock.

By the way, did y'all notice that the intitial stadium display at the end of the game said USC 2006 National Champions...then was promptly corrected ?

Prompt
Sorry.  Californians in the stadium were telling me the correction was the fastest correction EVER.  Even faster than the 1927 correction or the modern era 1985 correction.

$2 for the shirt eh?  You could've waited and gone to Haiti next month and gotten the shirt for free when helicopters drop all the misprinted merchandise over the island.

The songs:
Defensive Stop - Tribute to Troy
First Down - 3rd chorus of Fight On!
Turnover - All Right Now
Big hit - Power
Touchdown - All of Fighton, followed by Conquest
Field Goal - All of Fighton
3rd quarter - William Tell Overture
Halftime - whatever we feel like (usually involves dancing)

I think thats the staples, although I may have missed a circumstance or two.

Fight On, Beat the (insert Trojan oppoent here)!

Thats the one... Tribute to Troy
How many times do you think yall played that one?

o/u 62?

by the other Andrew on Jan 9, 2006 5:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure our record is
82, against Stanford a few years ago.  In conference opponents actually keep track.  They think it bothers us.  In all honesty, that song being played really gets into the heads of both fans, and players.  There's a reason Mack had Tribute and Fight On! cycling through in the locker room.

I don't know about the Rose Bowl.  Probably closer to 40...we didn't make nearly as many stops as we usually do.

re: colt
I did read your post, and the fact that you're saying that Mock was a better decision maker, had more poise in the pocket, and better touch is so absurd it's laughable.

I chose to focus on McCoy's decision-making ability because I ignored those ridiculous assertions about Mock's ability.

by Jason Mayer on Jan 9, 2006 2:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Mock was no slouch
Just a victim of circumstance. I seem to recall a certain game winning drive against tech a couple years back. Mock played well when given the Chance (sorry) but was just eclipsed by Vince.

by gerstmaster on Jan 9, 2006 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

#5
Chance would have done quite well for himself.  Mack's motioning for the righty out of the bullpen helped Vince get that 30-2 record early on.  When we had Roy, BJ, and Sloan as seniors Mock was the only QB who could get them the ball.  When Vince was playing that first year, it was more than frustrating for the recievers.  VY has truly come along way with his development.  Dare I even say Chance had some wheels of his own compared to Simms...but certainly was in the shadow of VY.

Let the Colt McCoy era begin! He is a far better named replacement than Snead.

Wasn't trying to be rude Link but...
I'm tired of the argument that Texas wasn't all that impressive minus VY.  What if VY had only run for 120 yards, and Charles and gained those extra 80 yards.  That would have given us two 100 yard rushers.  The point is, every UT runner amassed at least a 5+ ypc.  That's not what I called being dominated.

by Blitzburgh on Jan 9, 2006 4:52 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough
At least your honest.  And to be fair, I'll concede I didn't know that the other backs were averaging that much.  VY stole the game, and I frankly wasn't going to research how well everyone else did.

Link (again)
The frustration you're feeling from this end stems from the fact that it's been pretty frustrating to me, and I'm sure to many Texas fans, to hear over and over how Vince was the only guy on the field playing for Texas last Wednesday night. Many players contributed, including David Thomas with 10 huge catches to keep the chains moving, Ramonce Taylor's big play touchdown, Pittman, Carter and Sweed making plays downfied and Jamaal and Selvin getting tough yards to the tune of 5+ per carry. Without those very talented players (most of whom return as experienced veterans next season) making plays against a pretty solid defense, there is no national title for Texas, no matter how much Vince wanted to run around. This is also why I've been flying off the handle on people who claim that Texas is screwed next year without Vince. Texas has been recruiting well for years now and the roster is full of sick talent, including big, scary men ready to replace our two departing offensive linemen. I promise you, if last Wednesday guys had dropped passes, not gotten open or had been stuffed at the line, #10 could not have just won that game by himself.

Now, is Texas going to play for the national title next year without Vince? Probably not. But I'm ok with that. There's enough talent there to win another Big 12 title and go to a BCS game.

By the way, I was at the game last Wednesday and you guys have a great band. Nice halftime show. While our band was fantastic, the Beatles songs kinda killed me at halftime.

Being in the TMB is something else.  We played Final Countdown (meh) Brooklyn (song by the young brass band...if you like jazz or brass ensembles, check it out...its stellar) and Beat it (gotta love the pelvic thrusting.  I heard the last 4 counts where we grab and thrust caused some controversy).

If not, you'll never be as good as the aTm band, my personal favorite fascist musical ensemble...
