A couple of weeks ago someone posted a diary looking ahead to the 2007 secondary. In the wake of last Saturday's cluster bomb attack against the current secondary, I thought it might be fun to revisit our thoughts on next year's defense in general. Our offense, should continue at its current pace with further development of Colt and the return of the receivers. THe loss of three seniors on the O-line will be felt, but at Texas we reload and this should be no exception.
I am really curious, however, about the defense. The loss of Crowder and Robison will hurt, but we are very deep on the D-line and should have plenty of talent to replace them. The question is, will they step up? However, when you look at this year's group, the play has been inconsistant. They have been great against the run, but hte pass rush has been spotty at best. I really hope to see improvement in the linebackers next year. Bobino has been inconsistant as well and will always be solid but not great. Killebrew needs to be replaced. He is a disappointment and should be replaced next year by Kindle. I also really want to see more of Drew Kelson. Kelson's speed and coverage ability is solely needed against the pass. No offense to Scott Derry, who has played very well this year, but I think Kelson needs to be in the game more often to cover receivers out of the backfield.
Finally, to the secondary. THis is going to be the real question for next year's defense. Palmer and Foster are going to really have to step up. Deon Beasley as well. Chykie Brown should be in the mix, but will he be ready as RS frshman. Will Curtis Brown and Ben Wells contribute as true freshman. THis is the group that will really have to make strides next year for us to be in the MNC game picture. Finally, the safeties. Can Marcus Griffin start at safety next year? Is Ishie ready to go. Eric Jackson?
What are your thoughts/concerns looking ahead?
