The 12 game season: One game too many?

Man, a Saturday without a Texas game?  I was at a loss at what to do.  Fortunately there were some other good games to fill the void.  Now, I know there is no such thing as too much football, except when everyone on defense has been hurt at some point this season.

I'm nearing the conclusion that 12 games is too many, given the way our season is set up:

 - All Big 12 teams have to finish their season by next Saturday because we have that championship game the next week.

 - Because it's a "short week" and a rivalry game, both Texas and A&M have bye weeks before our games.

Therefore we have to have 11 straight games before a bye week.  That means no healing injuries in late September or using an off week to fix glaring errors.

Twelve games isnt too many for other teams, like USC because they still have two more weeks to play regular season games.

We usually have a bye week sometime in late September and that kind of helps separate the out of conference season from the Big 12 meat of the schedule.  I realize Sammy St is basically a bye week, but it's not.  Players still have to get themselves in that mental position to play the game, which might lead to some sort of burnout down the line.  Plus, no one really wants to play Sammy.  We'd rather play better opponents.

Thoughts? Or maybe a better question is, Where would you rather our bye week have been?
