2006 tOSU vs. 2005 UT

Kicker posed a pretty good question that I think deserved it's own topic.

Is 2006 tOSU as good as 2005 UT?

I think on the surface, we can, and will, all agree that Texas 2005 was better than the 2006 Ohio State team is, but looking at the teams a little closer, I balk.  There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between the two teams.

  1. Great Leadership (VY & TS)
  2. Best Player in NCAA (VY & TS)
  3. Breakout receivers
  4. Stellar offense
  5. Solid defense
  6. Special players on both sides (Ross, Huff, VY, Taylor - Ginn, Laurenitis, Smith, Pittman)
  7. Hard fought victories against great teams (USC & Michigan)
I'm sure there are other similarities, and ultimately I agree that 2005 Texas would beat this OSU team.  But it's worth noting the similarities to the two teams.

I am curious as to what you think about the comparisons.  The level of competition may be a notch lower this year, but are the comparisons apt?

May sound crazy, but I think...
the only team in the history of college football that could compete with the 2004/2005 USC Trojans or 2005 Longhorns is the 1995 Cornhuskers simply because they could control the clock by running the ball and keep the other offense off the field. Plus they had one of nasty freaking defense.

I also agree with that original poster that a lot of tOSU's success this year is predicated on the overall mediocrity of college football this season.

Troy Smith is going to win the Heisman in a landslide and in my opinion, he's not fit to wear VY's jock.

2005 Longhorns stronger, imho
I think we would be in the Championship game if we only had one player off the 2005 roster-M Huff.
With V Young and M Huff, forget about it!!!

Vince carries it
The two teams are pretty comparable, but I still think that VY's ability to be a freaking badass clutch QB is what would cinch it up for UT 2005.

INHO
The difference between them is more general...
It is much harder to run the table in the Big 12 than the Big 11 or 10 whatever.  For two reasons.
  1. All the schools are in different states except the Michigans and Purdue/Indiana(who cares).  Most of them don't have to experience the cold hard hatred and penis envy associated with having 4 big schools in one state stewing all year about how much it would validate their entire existence to beat the state team that's on top.  ATM, Tech, Baylor, all they care about is beating Texas and feeling better about their general miserable, nut squeezing, cow manure smelling lives.  They couldn't care less about the rest of their season. That makes for a very hard road trip within division play and an environment in which anything, I mean anything, can happen in those games.  It usually doesn't, but every once in a while it does, it ruins your season and it's fucking embarassing beyond belief.
  2.  No conference championship game.  Nuff said.

not even close...
2005 Texas by a mile...

and 2005 USC too.  They were both great teams, far better than any out there this year.

But here's the beauty part for tOSU - it doesn't matter!!!  If they win, they'll have their own trophy, and it will be a special year for them.  Their last MNC team wasn't even the best in the country (frankly, in a playoff, they would have been unlikely to even get to the championship game), but I guarantee you they still have warm feelings when they think about them.

You don't have historically great teams every year.  If you did, the term would lose its meaning...
