Roger the Racist?

At the least this was a poor choice of words, or at the max, the reason why I don't like parts of Texas.

Clemens, who broke down late last season with injuries, said he felt fine after the WBC and left the tournament impressed by the quality of the international teams.

But he made a questionable comment when speaking about the devotion of the Japanese and South Korean fans.

"None of the dry cleaners were open, they were all at the game, Japan and Korea," Clemens said. "So we couldn't get any dry cleaning done out there, but I guess the neatest thing is that 50,000 of them were at Anaheim Stadium."

Holy shit
It's about to be fine city for Clemens, what a ridiculous thing to say.

Wow
I woke up this morning to check ESPN and they already changed the title of the article and removed the insentive remark portion of the article on the right hand side. I am really confused.

Amazing
Orientals run the majority of US Dry Cleaning businesses and its about time someone said it.

Plus, who is going to fine Roger?  The Anaheim Asian Chamber of Commerce?  No, b/c its good PR.
Keep it real Roger

Don't forget
Tbone, don't forget that Asians are also overrepresented in the medical and engineering fields (not just in small businesses) and are the wealthiest ethnic group in America.

Yes, Roger keep it real, real Southern.

Futhermore
After reading the updated ESPN article, they put his comment in context.

I hope this is the actual context of the statement, but if it is he is NOT a racist, but was trying to be a humorist.

This again shows the power of ESPN and their media empure. By just adding a few lines and subtracting a few the entire meaning of his quote changed. If they kept the article as they had put last night, Roger would have had a backlash from Asian political groups (come to Alief, the Asian community is strong).

Have you ever lived in the south?
If you have, then surely you know that Southerners speak their mind with total disregard to the implecations it may bring.  It's not exactly the greatest quality we have, but it's there.  We (typically) don't mean any harm by our comments, but they are put into a light that just sounds racist.

Take his comments for example.  Yes, the way you explained them sound utterly racist.  However, the way I took it (and probably the way he meant it) was that a lot of Dry cleaner stores are owned by Asians.  That's not racist.  It's a fact.  Just like a lot of donut shops in my area are owned/run by Asians.  Is it racist that they chose this as a profession?  It was their choice.  I agree, there are plenty of Asians that are Dr.s, Computer programmers, and inevitably work at every credit card company for which I own a card.  Is that racist?  No.  They just work there.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, but your line of thinking on this diary is exactly what is wrong with America today.  People are overly sensitive to everything and raise red flags if people fart down-wind.  Lighten up.  Let people be who they are.

I am being oversensitive and OU Sucks
I agree that I am being oversensitive, because you can turn any off cuff remark into racism, which can be annoying if its unsubstantiated. However, I did grow up in the Houston and heard some of the most racist crap growing up. I think responding to comments like that is what corrects unfair implicit stereotypes that pervade all culture (not just in the South or in Texas).

BUT I don't think this sort of debate is needed on this blog, because this is the BURNT ORANGE NATION. Let's all agree on a few things. OU Sucks. Texas is home to the best football. And Vince Young is God.

In addition
When an ethnicity is industrious, wealthy and can't say the letter L, they're fair game for any racist remark.  That's why when choosing a new OB/GYN I choose Dr. Perry Whiteman or Richard Smalls M.D., as opposed to Kun Ng or Cho Lo.  Sure Dick or Perry, probably C- copied off of Hsu in Neuroproctology class, but at least I can understand when they say "Its Chlamydia again TBS."

Thanks Go
Sometimes I just get on my Anglo high panda and there's no Samari sword that can knock me off it.  Its all I can do to not dick-slap the Taiwanese Hobuki dancer that giggles like a plum sauce $10 bride next to me at work.  When that bitch coughs, I just pray the bird flu/SARS mutant strain stay on her side of the fortune cookie.  Sushi and Lucy Lui are the only Asian love children my stomach can tolerate.
Sorry about that i just don't know what came over me, must have been that fucking Kraut food for lunch.

I still like Clemens
I'm Asian, I don't own dry cleaners. I don't care. But my only problem is the inaccuracy of his stereotype. Dry cleaners are typically owned by Koreans and Indians, not Japanese.

by krazieman on Apr 7, 2006 11:37 AM CDT reply actions

Certainly no offense intended
But I can't tell the difference between Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, and all other Oriental nationalities.  It's like telling an American from a Brittain just by looking at them (without seeing the teeth).

It must depend on where you live
I've seen almost all Korean and Chinese dry cleaners, and maybe once an Indian.
