MattH: Resident OU Homer...

I have a question for you.  I'm not calling you out, just a curiosity question to get an OU fan perspective.

With the loss of Bomar and Quinn, assuming that no other players are investigated and tossed, how many losses does this add to your record for '06?  I know you think OU is still in ok position as far as the South is concerned (based on your story yesterday), but where do you think OU should be ranked now in the overall rankings?

Not the Red Raiders!
I'm really not worried about Texas Tech. The three games that could kill OU this season are Oregon, Texas and Texas A&M.

This week OU went from a team that could contend for a national championship to a team that could contend for the Big 12 Championship.

On the other hand Paul Thompson could be better in this new offense than what we are giving him credit for.

The first true test will be Oregon. We'll know a lot more after that.

Texas Tech
leap frogs OU this year in the Big 12 and Stoops leaves within the next 2, cementing the change as semi-permanent. Adrian Peterson leaves OU early to pursue a career in the NFL and OUs recruiting never matches prior success. Downgrade in coaching exaggerates the issue and OU is looking up to Black and Red for many seasons to come.

I'm thrilled that OU fans are looking past Texas Tech.

I don't know that it will happen that way
But that sounds like a very plausible scenario.  I can't say I would be disappointed if it played out that way.  Peterson needs to go pro (to utilize his talent and not get hurt).  Stoops is going to wind up being chased out if things like this keep happening.

Chased out or choose to leave
He could be a defensive coordinator in the NFL within the next few years.

Run out
Don't get me wrong, Stoops is a very talented coach.  But at what point does lack of control take over that coaching ability?  My opinion is that the writing will be on the wall if recruits stop signing up for OU.  That could happen very fast.

Stoops is Barry Switzer incarnate (even though Switzer is still alive - is that possible?).

Another question - or two...
Maybe this is just my limited knowledge peeking it's ugly head, but why did they choose Thompson?  Hear me out.
  1. Thompson already lost the faith of his coaches last year.
  2. It's a brand new offense and all QB's are in the same situation, so why not go with the one with the most upside?  Or do any of them actually have upside?
And PHF, I just mean actually adding to their previous record (in your eyes).  For example, I thought they would lose 2-3 before this hit.  Now, maybe 3-4.  MattH has a different perspective and thought they were a 0-1 loss team.  In your eyes, what is the difference in losses before and now?

From what I've read (but maybe it was from MattH)
I think THompson fits into the new wide open system better than the other guys.

Ah gotcha...
I thought they would lose to Texas and Oregon before getting Bomared, so I guess that means one extra loss (Tech).

I read that
And ultimately, I think you're right.  Thompson was the right choice.  But there still has to be questions in the coaches collective minds.  Howe could there not be?
