Thoughts: ruh, roh
damn another week without internet, but i wanted to get my thoughts out on the blog. sorry if this isn't elegant, but i feel obligated to let it be known which side of the fence i am on regarding the tOSU debacle.
-first it would have taken an incredible game for the Horns to win against tOSU. Troy Smith is deadly, and I kind of realized it watching him torch NIU in the first quarter. I just didn't want to believe it until now.
-however, that doesn't excuse the offensive ineptness. there are indisputable facts regarding Mack Brown era football, and just looking at a couple paint a picture of offensive woe in big games. i am not going to give a history lesson, but in short w/o 2005 VY are offense has had a tendency to disappear in big games against good coaches (hand in hand).
-i thank jeebus that we have Mack, but we should never again put ourselves in a situation where we have to start any freshman level QB. it is a part of program building to have a QB in the wings. i know Mack has learned his lesson to take nothing for granted.
- i realize my credintials to speak about coordinating on the college level are essentially non-existent but i do know that a bubble screen or a swing pass to a wideout is really a run. i am not as against it as some, but it does get called way too much. it's #1 weekness is that the receiver generally wants to make a cut back to the middle of the field in a v-line w/ the entire defense, which results in great opportunities for 230lb linebackers to deliver ball busting blows to a 180lb WR on the 1yrd line.
you would think that w/ an inexperience QB if running is working, you mix up the type of run plays (iso, toss sweep etc), and you trust your backs to move the ball up the field, not the WRs. WRs are then used for play action downfield.
but again, i am not proposing i know what the Texas offense needs, but I do know when it is clearly not working. a lowely 7 points scored by the University of Texas at home, is totally unacceptable and there should be questions asked and more thought put in the subject. i encourage more of this and look forward to reading, and discusing this subject with other open minded BON'ers.

colt ran a little
my only complaint is how much we threw on the few times we were inside the 10. at least it's better than the knee-jerk henry melton sub in, but let selvin bust it in.

old problems resurface without Vince
- UT's only problem in the Mack Brown era before last year with VY? Winning the big games. How odd that as soon as VY is gone UT cannot win the big game. Watch MB on the sideline during big games. He is a nervous wreck. How many times do you have to play with your headset? Did you see the fever blister on his lip that was not there before the game? Did you see him panic and challenge the fumble in the 1st qtr even though he said all week he would save it until the 4th qtr because the booth reviewed all plays anyway, so it did not make sense to use it before then?
- Every successful head coach and OC has a system and obtains players that fit that system. If the system doesn't work with their players they either change the players or the system. UT is playing in a system suited for VY. Does Colt fit that system? No. He can scramble when necessary, but he is not a run first mentality or anything near an option quarterback. UT's system requires a QB that can truly run otherwise the defense just strings out the QB and pounces on the RB.
- If Mack and GD will not change the system to fit the players they have recruited and given scholarships to, then either A) they are too arrogant to change or B) they do not know how to change. Personally, based on the Mack Brown era I think it is B.
4. At every level of football a good head football coach will tell you that if they have a good running game and a defense they can win. Ask Bill Cowher and the Steelers.
Even though our defense didn't shut down the OSU passing game, they shut down the OSU running game and had wonderful defensive series when out offense turned the ball over.
- At every level of football a good OC will tell you that if you can run the ball successfully, you keep doing it until the other team stops you and then you do it again until they stop you to make sure.
- In any offense, especially if you must pass the ball to try and catch up, you have to throw it downfield to your WRs at least once or twice to keep the defense from loading up on your short routes and the run game. If you are the OC (who knows this) and Colt won't throw the ball down the field, then you tell him to do it anyway or you will put Jevan in. Obviously, GD never said this because Colt never threw the ball downfield to his WRs. Besides do you really think Colt is afraid to throw a deep pass? This is the dude who swam 300 yards across a lake to help someone screaming for help in the pitch black night.
- I think both MB and GD are fine people and wish somehow I could help them or anybody could. If they do not change we will never repeat and annually waste talent.
