Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

I suck almost as much as Greg Davis

They loosened up some time during the 2004 season and let VY do his thang.  I thought this behavior signaled a shift in offensive coaching philosophy at UT.  I was desperately wrong.  Vince Young saved the Horns from their offensive coordinator, and it would take a one loss 2006 season to convince me otherwise.  I believed that it was ultimately Greg Davis more liberal approach to play-calling that had changed the atmosphere in the Horns' huddle, but clearly it was the one of a kind presence of Vince that kept the offense running like it did in 2004 and 2005.

Star-divide

We just got our asses handed to us.  Greg Davis, obviously, is only one of many guilty parties in this toppling.  OSU shucked up UT royally.  Smith, Ginn, Gonzalez, and Laurinaitus, to name a few, really handed it to the Horns.  That's great for them.  It didn't help that the Horns ran a fairly conservative, predictable offense.  It also didn't help that Tarrell Brown was not on the field.

The dump passes suck.  Colt can throw downfield, and Limas Sweed can catch, but Greg Davis believes neither of these.  Sticking with the trusty veteran was a good plan until it starting sucking.  Selvin, bless his soul, just isn't the playmaker that JC is.  Young had some great runs, but it is evident that the coaches held JC back in this game.  I suppose we can credit the "hot hand" way of doing things.

Where in the hell were our receivers?  It seemed -- emphasis on "seemed" -- that over half of UT's passing plays were dumps into the flat.  Is Shipley any good?  If he is, than he was shortchanged tonight.  Can "J-Mike" get open for big gains?  Is it a good idea to run an option running play on 3rd and long when the game is still in reach (admittedly a long reach)?  I'm sick of this crap.  It's been one game since the  beginning of the late 21-game streak, but I'm already sick.  Images of boring, predictable, pussy game-calling are all too fresh in my head right now.

This is a rant, with no real direction, but I'm sad, pissed off, drunk and in need of release.  Does this open the door for Jevan?  Who knows.  One of the reasons the offense looked so awful was because the spread option, as UT runs it, depends on a QB that can create with his legs.  I love the  guy, but he doesn't create a threatening image on the ground.  Snead can do more with his feet.  And after all, we need a QB who can overcome his offensive coordinator.  Snead has more natural athletic ability.  Colt did well with what he was told, but I believe Snead deserves a game-time chance to prove himself.

Ted Ginn scored one touchdown, and it was a decent play.  It reminded me of so many Billy Pittman and Ramonce plays from last year.  That said, the greatest effect Ginn had on this game was his distracting presence.  He opened things up for the running game, and for his colleague across the field, number 11, Anthony Gonzales.  Lucky for Gonzales and Ginn, on any given play, only one of them had to deal with a starting corner.  The other was left with a talented but not as good Palmer or Foster.  Tarell Brown opened up OSU's passing game more than my UT homer ass anticipated.

I won't say what if, though.  We had our asses handed to us.  Brown, I believe would've helped to keep the game closer, but UT was beat no matter what personnel showed up.  It's impossible to overcome a stellar offense with a great leader.  The task becomes even greater when big Greg Davis, or "GD" as I've come to know him, plans his offense around the assumption that the Horns D will hold the opponent to 7 or fewer points.

We're all disappointed right now.  I'm sick.

Greg Davis
If he is going to run that sorry ass one back shotgun stuff he better put Sherrod Harris back there, or we will lose 4 or 5 games this year.

Colt is fine
Davis played to lose, not to win. But who knew that Colt wouldn't self destruct, aside from that pick.

As strange as this may sound I saw more positives from this game than negatives.

This still a really good team.

BTW, how bad is next year's secondary going to suck?

2007's defense is starting to worry me.

I'm applying to Oxford and the Sorbonne. Harvard's my safety

Ridiculous
Two games into the season and the Greg Davis bashing has already begun.  The one problem I have with his playcalling tonight was his abandonment of the running game too early, but that's a small gripe.

He gave McCoy plenty of chances to throw downfield, but he never took them and the throws he did make just weren't strong or crisp.  There's no zip on any of his passes.  He just doesn't have the arm that's needed for the intermediate routes, deep outs, etc.  It's his grasp of the offense and not his physical tools that made him the starter.  He got gunshy after the pick and didn't want to make those throws, and it's not like he was ever pressured.  We credit Davis for playing to VY's strengths, and then bitch about his playcalling with McCoy, when McCoy doesn't have any real strengths.

But even without the passing threat, we still ran the ball all over them.  And why trash Selvin?  He looked great tonight.  There's no reason why he and Charles shouldn't touch the ball an equal number of times every game.

I think the Tarell Brown suspension had a much more damaging effect than anybody wanted to claim when it happened.  They were able to exploit the weaknesses in the secondary all night.  Picking on Foster until we had to roll our coverage to help him and then taking advantage of single coverage on Ginn.

But I'm with EYESofBEVO, there were a lot of positives.  Running game, offensive line, run defense, pass protection all looked good.

Yeah
the running game looked excellent and i am surprised they called more passes, ecspecially with CMC struggling... as for the run defense looking good i disagree...they looked great on 1st down and any inside run, but whenever pittman ran it outside thats where he broke off his 8-12 yard runs and that why his numbers arent half bad. If it wasnt first down tOSU also ran well because UT didnt have 8 in the box...sure anyone can have good run defense, if you know its gonna be a run...
The O-line didnt look amazing either, sure CMC had time to pass sometimes, but there were 6 blockers for 4 rushers, on some of those stretch run plays you saw Ohio States big D lineman pushing guys back...
as for selvin young...he looked good, but he really cant catch =/

defense
I don't know what more you can ask of the run defense and the front 7.  80 rushing yards, decent pressure at times against a good OL.  Sure Pittman had a couple of nice runs, but the secondary was getting shredded.  So you either blitz or back off making it a little easier to run.

I'm not sure what you're looking for out of the offensive line either.  We average 5.5 yards a carry and McCoy has a lot of time to throw all night.  This was a pretty good team and a pretty good defense Texas was playing.

Selvin's hands are fine - he dropped one pass.

Ok KH (Broken Record)
What makes you think McCoy can throw deep?  Was it the bad read interception or the Underthrown deep pass to Sweed that would have been intercepted?  His best pass was dropped by finley, but that was not a read, it was a scramble, and that pass was underthrown.

We did not get our asses handed to us.  It was closer than the score suggests, we missed a FG in the beginning of the 4th to get within 7.  Our numbers were good, we just had some bad drops, fumble, holding calls, underthrown balls, and zone coverages with too much time for a great QB to win the game.  There were plenty of positives to take out of this game, and if Colt's ability to read Ds improves we will still have a shot at winning out and playing BCS if not for the NC.

Receivers need a could of improvements (shielding and holding on to the ball) but a lot of it was problems with Colt making the right reads and dumping to his safety, but that is going to be expected with his inexperience and with OSU's constantly switching up what they were showing.

Sober up and get some Advil, we got plenty more football to play before we call this season dead.
