Major Applewhite

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Former Texas quarterback and Rice assistant Major Applewhite is the latest addition to new head coach Nick Saban's staff at Alabama.

Saban announced Saturday that Applewhite, former offensive coordinator at Rice, has joined his staff, but his duties have not yet been determined.

I can't wait
Until Major comes back to be head coach at Texas. Not that I want Mack gone anytime soon, but that will be a glorious day.
I have a commitment to the truth.

I kept figuring
that Jerry Gray would make it back as Defensive Coordinator sooner rather than later - though being a defensive backs guy like Akina, that appears to be a distant thought to Mack.  With Gray as DC, he'd then be in line to take over HC position whenever Mack & Co. finally decided to hang 'em up (hopefully not anytime too soon).  Then, Gray would turn to the up and coming Major as his new offensive coordinator.

As it turns out, Major is really complicating that dream scenario for me, as he keeps climbing the success ladder too quickly.  Congrats to him.  Look forward to having him back on the 40 acres in the future.

Major at Texas?
What makes most people think he would want to come back (other than the dollars) to coach under Mack Brown?

Dude got jacked around his senior year and played mop up duty until the Big 12 championship and Holiday Bowl. There's no loyalty in college football anymore except for the fans. And Applewhite will learn from the best (Saban) at not being loyal.

He was bitter his senior year

Major as Texas' OC?
Well, not in the near future but he did do swimmingly as Rice's OC.

It does seem strange to go from OC to QB coach
But then again the coach at Rice went to Tulsa as the new HC there. So im sure it was either follow his coach to Tulsa or pursue other opportunites.  There is also the fact that Alabama is a much more prolific program than Rice as well.

Either way HUGE congrats to Major and heres to hoping that his heart is still with Texas when a position on our staff opens up that he will fit into!!

Tulsa just got
Gus Malzahn, the OC from Arkansas to replace Applewhite.  Look for Tulsa to hit the radar in the next few seasons before all of the above bolt for better jobs.

He'll probably...
...have some say in the offense and play calling.  Saban is probably wary of his youth, and plans to let him "apprentice" under Pendry until he's got the rhythm of being an OC at a much bigger program/higher level.

Cold-hearted
Coach Graham moving to Tulsa just 3 days after signing a contract extension. That is just brutal and insulting. I can understand him wanting to go back there after he coached there back in the day, but he left Rice high and dry.

I hope they can find someone to continue their rise to relevance.

Rice Head Coach
Talking to a friend of mine who is an Ex Rice Letterman I have found out there was no love loss between the head coach and the rest of the atheletic department.  May have been for the best!

Rice losing more than coaches
"Allen QB Nathan Dick confirmed today that he is looking around and does not consider himself committed to Rice after head coach Todd Graham and offensive coordinator Major Applewhite both left the school in the last several days.

Dick, who had meetings set up with Arkansas and Houston for today, has talked to Rice coaches since Graham and Applewhite left, but for now, he wants to weigh his options."
