Two Cents: Our Offensive Offense

We're all a little angry with Greg Davis, so here's the question.  Take one play out of his playbook and add one play in.

I'll bet the Bubble Screen makes it into about %80 of the comments.

one play...

TAKE OUT the GODDAMN WR Screen. When was the last time that play got us 20 yards?

PUT IN...Play-Action...The real stuff too. Out of a singleback or even I-Formation. It would really help bring the safeties up briefly, enough so that Sweed or Cosby can get free down field. The extra blocker in the backfield would be beneficial to our pourous line. This only helps if you run out of the same formation. Consistently.

Last time

was against Rice.

Rice?

that doesn't count. I can bugs bunny pass a bubble screen to myself and make 20 yards against Rice.

You asked the question

I don't think the issue is the bubble screen as much as the amount and situations it is used.  Other teams use it well, but I think it needs to be used moderately against teams that are over blitzing and needs to be combined with a more effective deep threat.

by Wells on Oct 1, 2007 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course...

why don't we use it in variations? like fake screen, bomb to opposite side to Sweed? of course, that is assuming that we can make adjustments and be creative.

And of course the issue with the bubble screen is the amount it's used. If we used it once a game and it got 5 yards or (-)2 yards and we never saw it again, fine. We probably wouldn't have a thread that focuses on getting rid of one play. But when we throw it 4-6 times including a 4th and 8? Get rid of it. If you can't make it work for you, it doesn't work.

Of course, if we're lulling everybody to sleep in the hopes of catching OU napping and hoping to jump that screen, then throw deep for a TD resulting in nonstop scoring and killing them, then all is well. I'll personally send GD a bouquet of Burnt Orange Roses and invite him to my birthday party. I just don't see it happening.

4th and 8

On a 4th and 8.

There is no reason to send anybody at all less than 5 yards. I'd rather us take a sack while ATTEMPTING A FORWARD PASS. For the love of God, just hail mary it.

zone read
Colt is not Vince.  Deal.  Defenses are keying on JC and not biting on Colt keeping the ball at all.  Plus, Colt is taking enough shots just trying to throw, much less run.

Add in: getting Finley medium to deep in the middle of the field.  We are wasting an elite talent by keeping him within 5 yards of the LOS.

Wishbone Revival

As was noted last week, Chiles at QB with JC and VM beside him, tell the OLine to creat just little holes, and let the defense try to stop the rush.  If that's effective, I'll bet you see open receivers that even a novice like Chiles could connect with.

For variety...

How about those 3 yard hitch/slant/crosses they keep running (and consequently, the defenders keep jumping)? There's such a thing as 10 to 15 yard pass plays, and no, not the out routes in which Colt keeps missing his receiver by 5 feet.

The whole play action thing would be nice, except nobody believes we can run anywhere in the I.

by jc25 on Oct 1, 2007 10:26 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

remove

Remove Zone Read - Colt should NEVER have a planned run, unless we need inches.  I don't mind if he runs when the pocket collapses or if he sees a lane.

Add 10-20 Yard passing routes - Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but most of our passes this year seem to be underneath and a lot of times, the receiver is not catching the ball in stride.  When we do throw farther, it is usually a deep pass where we have had only a handful of successes this year.

The run
game does not work.

And it hasn't since Ricky left.

It isn't scheme, personnel, experience, individual RBs, the QB or the O-line. There is something fundamentally wrong with their approach to the run game.

How does Selvin Young look so pedestrian behind 3 future NFL lineman at UT, but looks like a million dollar starter in the Pros?

Putting in an extra blocker at TE or subbing Ogby/Mcgee would have given a much needed spark to the offense in the 3rd quarter. I know JC only had 17 carries total, but without the INTs he was on track to have 30+ carries.  That just isn't his game.

Disagree

Cedric Benson was stellar in the run game. In 2004, even with a non-throwing Vince Young, Benson still managed a great year. The OU shutout happened because the Sooners put everyone and their mom in the box, and Benson still bullied his way to almost 100 yards. Even in the Rose Bowl against Michigan, Benson hurt his knee early but kept staying in the game, which (even if only slightly) forced the Wolverine defense to put some focus onto Benson, allowing Vince to run wild.

But I agree, of course, Selvin is an NFL-caliber backup, and Jamaal is a phenomenal runner. The fact that our offense is so ill-suited to their talents is mystifying.

In the 3 years

Ced played against OU, can you remember single play he made a difference?

Ced was a non-factor each year and in fact, fumbled the ball in 04 killing a TD drive.

by EYESofBEVO on Oct 1, 2007 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Career

There aren't too many plays throughout his career that I can remember that made a difference.  Cedric was not and still is that type of back.  He is a consistent runner that has good games when he can get about 4-5 yards per run.  It is tough for him to have good games when the defense keys in on him.

by JohnsonUT on Oct 1, 2007 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's true...

He's much more of a LenDale White than a Reggie Bush. But before Vince was Vince, the two players to watch in a Longhorn uniform were Cedric Benson and Derrick Johnson. I still have the 2004 schedule card that features both of them.

And unfortunately, the fumble-itis still plagues Ced. It's strange; at Texas he was known for his consistency and durability, yet during his first two years as a Bear, he was neither. But (Super Bowl non-withstanding) he NEVER fumbled the ball. This year, he's facing 8-man fronts and taking it like a champ, only he keeps putting the ball on the ground.

2 QBs

the 2 QB set with one as a wide-out makes no sense...it hasn't gained any yards the 2-3 games they have used it..the players look like they haven't practiced it or at least are not comfortable with it...why expose Colt to a open field hit when stretching to catch a pass...if he is not a real pass catching threat then why have him on the field to begin with...

and in a game like the one last Saturday, why try a gimmicky play on a wet field with poor footing and a wet ball that people have had trouble holding onto...

i trace the game's demise from that play where Chiles had trouble holding onto he ball...it led eventually to 3rd and long and set up the interception which sealed the game...

by fandidnot attend on Oct 1, 2007 10:34 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Speaking of 2 QB's....

would it not make more sense to have Chiles in the slot or split out.  Everyone knows that the ball IS NOT going to McCoy w/him split out, and everyone knows that Chiles is going to run out of that set.  I think it would make sense to have Chiles, who played receiver most of his HS career, as a recieving threat and or/run threat with a reverse/screen or something.  Davis is so uninventive and predictable with his play calling. I love Texas but he has got to go.

The bubble screen of course...

Nothing infuriates me more than a bubble screen.  I have seen it work a couple of times, but that is to say that it has worked 2/98 times it has been run since the 05 season.  I would If I were to add a play to the playbook, it would be a medium to long range slant pass play to either Sweed or Shipley

Josh Freeman's mom should have steered him towards the Backstreet Boys instead of football.

So many to choose from

You don't want to get rid of the screen because it is an effective weapon against blitz happy teams (watch what other teams do to us).  Just use it more wisely.  Get rid of the damned delayed hand off to Charles where by the time he gets the ball he is already dodging a tackler in the back field.  Replace it with a true I formation (which would need a real fullback, no offense to Lokey) so that we can pound the football and use play action effectively.  This will open up the middle for Finley and cause them to use single coverage on Limas and Co.

by txfan76 on Oct 1, 2007 11:11 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Zone Read

McCoy is not much of a run threat. JC is not going to get off with this play because he is getting the ball about 90% of the time, and the D knows it.  I would love to see the revival of the pro set. 2 backs who are a threat, I think it would work great for Charle/McGee, of course I loved the Offense with they ran it with Ricky/Priest, or S.Mitchell/Adrian Walker...even with Ricky/H.Mitchell...BRING BACK THE PRO-SET!!!

Variety

As someone illustrated a while back, we only have two running plays, both of which are easily recognized and countered. I'd like to see anything that would make the opponent less certain.

George Allen used to say that every game you should run 5 dives, 5 off tackle, 5 screens, and 5 draws. That makes a lot of sense. There's nothing wrong with running screens, just not the one we use.

As to what to take away -- first priority should be that set with McCoy as a wide receiver. What a recipe for disaster.

Might as well play Chiles

To me it's not about changing a play or two, it's about changing personnel.

If Greg Davis is hell bent on running the same gun and run offense, then we might as well put a QB in there that can run it (Chiles). At least that would give us a fighting chance with an O-Line that can't protect long enough for Colt to throw it down field anyway.

I like Colt, but this offense is wrong for him and it's getting harder and harder to watch him play knowing that the next good hit he takes will likely put him out of the game.

And here's my new dream scenario...

Greg Davis rides off into the sunset like Carl Reese did a few years ago...Mack hires Applewhite as the new OC with the promise that Major will be the head coach when Mack retires and becomes AD in a few years.

It will be so.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

Last year

the offense didn't have an identity. Right now I almost wish it was still a Jane Doe. Maybe that kept opposing teams guessing.

Bama fans want Major's head on a platter right now. They got shut out against FSU in the 1st half and didn't get going until the second half, when it was too late.
Sound familiar.....anyone?

I will say of the Bama games I've seen Major has been pretty aggressive. He isn't working with the 5 stars they had at FSU, either.

Davis is an old dog sitting on the porch in the sun. He's content and oblivious to the world around him.

Cats and dogs sleeping together.

by EYESofBEVO on Oct 1, 2007 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't see much of the game.

In the game before there was a situation where Bama needed a play or two before halftime. Major came up with two good plays; the QB couldn't execute the throw in either one even though the receivers were open. Aggressive, but it gave them the chance. One of the things we want here is for the Texas offense to have a chance, to take a good shot, not a two-yard out.

I don't know if Major has been that good the rest of the time but it wouldn't surprise me if he was. But he is a long way from being a head coach. There's a whole range of politics outside his domain of responsibilities right now where he has little experience. But he has seen three staffs being created and that damn useful experience.

He's perfect where it is right now. Plenty of time to learn the OC trade and perfect his system (speculation, but all OC's seem to have a system in the works). Plus he can learn all Saban knows. He might need it to beat him; they'll swim in the same sea some day. And I agree that Major can be perfectly at home right now in Alabama.

Right now Major could be the Texas OC but not the head coach. Besides, the hottest OC in the state is Jason Garrett. But he's headed for an NFL job.

And if you want a butt kicking D, bring in Bill Bradley.

by whills on Oct 1, 2007 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be wonderful, but...

...why would Major Applewhite want to leave Alabama where he grew up and where he is close to his family, to come back to the school that benched him to play Chrissy Simms?  I just came across this, http://firemajorapplewhite.blogspot.com/

I don't think you'll see Applewhite make a move unless it is to be the head coach somewhere, though I would love nothing more than for him to be back at Texas.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Was thinking the very same thing all day Saturday.  Can we get a 'Bring back Opie!' campaign going?

Having said that I'm officially not going to dis Greg Davis anymore because when I rewatched the game last night via DVR and was able to skip fwd to the next play immediately I saw decent (not great) but variety in the play calling for most of the game...let's be honest, we can't blame Davis for the times Colt flat out missed open receivers when he was not in serious danger of getting whacked.  Nor can we blame Colt for the numerous times he very deftly rolled away from pressure only to have a decent pass dropped.  [similarly we can't blame Akina for schemes that generated pressure but noone could 'close the deal']  And special teams...what special teams?

Now to the point, since I only saw one blatantly stupid 'bubble screen' last week I'm going to join the ranks of those that say scrap the Zone Read when/if Colt is in, and replace it with the I-formation.  You might recall we actually ran out of that set two or three times in that impressive opening drive.  And for goodness sake please run Obgy in the redzone and not JC or McGee.  A healthy dose of I-formation gives you the beef to block AND good play action.  I know this line can do that if given the chance, plus you eat more clock and give that mediocre Defense a chance to rest up so they can blitz the heck out of the opposition next time out!

I like your dream

I was hoping that before Alabama got him UT would have offered a Co-OC job with Applewhite calling the plays on and making adjustments game day and have GD stay on as QB coach/ gray beard adviser.

Now it will be tough to get Major back.

GD is a better coach than all of you

I too don't understand so many screen passes. I too was shocked on Saturday, sitting in the rain not believing what has happened.  If the offense continues to struggle for long, he'll be fired and I'm all for that.

But the point is, most of you guys can't even get an offensive coordinating job in a high school, let alone the university of Texas.   I'm not saying we should not criticize GD, I'm just pointing out that he probably knows football better than all of us, and we should just keep that in mind.

Power "I" Football

If GD loves the zone read so much he could really mess with defenses by having two offenses, one with Colt under center and having Cobb & Charles in the I formation, you gotta give Charles a chance.  Two, have Chiles & McGee run the zone read.  Utilize both schemes in games to keep defenses off balance and stick with what works.

by gwh65 on Oct 1, 2007 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's ridiculous

The point our "braintrust" has hit upon the most is that we need to stop depending on short, ball-control passes, and start using our talent downfield.

GD did not heed this particular advice, which was the most important advice. I PROMISE that if he had, we would have scored a lot more points. Who cares if he used McGee on the goal line. That's not a fundamental change.

I guess with all of the differing advice we have been giving him he missed the main point.  Maybe you should take the lead of the braintrust and start filtering it out so GD knows which points to listen to.

possibly even a double option
the best players to make plays should be playing for that play
3rd and goal on the 1? line up a tight end as a full back
didn't the colts hand off to one of their linemen in the superbowl?
the best players to make plays should be playing for that play

by abcdmetrius on Oct 1, 2007 6:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

eesh...

RBs aren't normally fit to be under center. For one, they don't practice taking snaps, nor should they. They don't get a running start at the line or holes and are less effective.

I liked the option we ran on the first drive, my heart just skipped a beat because we ran an option to the right on fourth down.

Lokey is an excellent lead blocker. He blew up that CB on the edge allowing McGee to walk in. He used to play fullback in HS, so I imagine letting him practice taking the handoff wouldnt be a bad idea. I'd be for trying to let Lokey take it in on 1st or 2nd and short. After that, let him lead block.

I have a suggestion for # and short. How about a fade pass to Sweed? How about a play action dive, rollout pass to Finley? How about making some type of divergence that will keep the defense honest and not stuff 11 in the box?

While the WR's are...

...running down the field, Colt can just sit back and chill out in the pocket and wait for them. Everybody talks about going vertical and that would be like really awesome except for the fact that COLT DOESN'T HAVE THAT MUCH TIME TO WAIT in his quickly imploding pocket. Get Chiles in the game. Teach him the Tao of Vince. Threaten the O-line with jail-time if they don't pass block. Move the "conservative - aggressive" slider to the right a little in coaching style (you know, like EA Sports NCAA 2007). Consolidate all the plays that have consistently shown absolutely nothing positive and RIP THEM OUT OF THE PLAY-BOOK. Tell GD to quick suckin' on his mom's tit and grow a pair.

IN:  any number of "real" running plays--tosses, handoffs--something that doesn't require JC to run seven yards from an idle start just to gain the LOS.  And these plays would utilize a fullback (God I miss Ricky Brown).

Coaches

I know we live in a fantasy football Madden world, but how many people responding have actually tried coaching at any level?

Do you have a playbook? A model you go by? How can you say what is better for this team than a guy who deals with these players on a daily basis for 3 hours and countless hours in the offseason?

If the bubble screen works well in practice at full speed, why wouldn't it work in a game?

Maybe there are things this group can't do as a unit like previous years. Maybe this is actually the rebuilding year that folks have feared.

If everyone is so smart, then they should drop their jobs and become coaches. If we all have the answers, then we could take a decent high school team and make them a state contender.

"Excuse me while I whip this out."

Ummm Nice try

Ah the classic "like you could do better" comment

Most of us may not have coaching experience, however we do have eyeballs and can clearly see what is not working and are simply suggesting what could work

It doesn't work in the game, so I would love to see if it works in practice.

And just for fun...

I'd like to see GD take a decent high school team and make them a state contender, or even a decent college team and make them a national contender (without the help of VY)

Greg Davis

If Greg Davis was any good at all, why dont other teams go after him to be the head coach??? The only reason we won a national championship is because he took the headset off and let vince do what needed to be done. He is incompetent at best. Ever heard of a screen pass?
