2006 Rose Bowl Revisited
Just a little something to "Get Your Horns Up"...
As the NFL season moves forward, it's interesting to note on how some of the players from USC and Texas that played in the '06 Rose Bowl have fared in the Pros to date:
USC - Leinart strugg-gling in Arizona, Bush having flashes of Brilliance as a pass receiver, but not so much as an RB, and Winston Justice of the Eagles getting lit up by the Giants' D-Line last night.
Texas - VY is the QB playing the best out of the 2006 QB Rookies, Michael Griffin coming on strong in Tennessee, Selvin Young playing well in Denver.
The talent will always be there. Here's to hoping this year's crop can turn it around Saturday at the RRS. Go Horns!

Saw on another site
I saw the other day that over 30 players who played in that game are in the NFL right now with more expected to be after this year. Amazing talent.

Just for fun...
I didn't put down redshirts (i.e., someone like Colt McCoy), and I'm using only my best guess as to the current players who will play at the next level (i.e., leaving out someone like Nate Jones).

*Obviously, I'm not as well versed in USC's team, so the players still on the team that might make the NFL are more of a best guess. I also couldn't find any undrafteds that made the league.
*USC graduated most of its talent in 2006, while we held on to a lot of players until 2007. Obviously, the losses of Vince and Michael Huff hurt.
*Our major strength was our DB's, while USC had a ridiculous stable of linebackers, although most at the time were young. It's sad to note that not a single linebacker we had in that game was pro material.
If I missed anything or put the wrong draft class/rank, feel free to post.

Also...
Best National Championship team of the 21st century? Charlie Palillo was discussing this on Houston 790 a few weeks back, and he said it was the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. So, out of boredom and aversion to work, here's their roster of draftees:
QB Ken Dorsey (7th round, 2003)
RB Clinton Portis (2nd round, 2002)
RB Najeh Davenport (4th round, 2002)
RB Willis MaGahee (#23, 2003)
RB Frank Gore (3rd round, 2005)
RB Jarrett Payton (undrafted)
WR Daryl Jones (7th round, 2002)
WR Andre Johnson (#3, 2003)
WR Roscoe Parrish (2nd round, 2005)
TE Jeremy Shockey (#14, 2002)
TE Kellen Winslow (#6, 2004)
TE Kevin Everett (3rd round, 2005)
OT Bryant McKinnie (#7, 2002)
OT Martin Bibla (4th round, 2002)
OT Joaquin Gonzalez (7th round, 2002)
OT Vernon Carey (#19, 2004)
OT Carlos Joseph (7th round, 2004)
OT Chris Myers (6th round, 2005)
OT Rashad Butler (3rd round, 2006)*
OT Brett Romberg (undrafted)
DT Vince Wilfork (#21, 2004)
DT Jerome McDougle (#15, 2003)
DT William Joseph (#23, 2003)
DT Andrew Williams (3rd round, 2003)
DT Jamaal Green (4th round, 2003)
DT Matt Walters (5th round, 2003)
DT Orien Harris (4th round, 2006)*
LB Jonathan Vilma (#12, 2004)
LB D.J. Williams (#17, 2004)
LB Darrell McClover (7th round, 2004)
LB Rocky McIntoch (2nd round, 2006)*
LB Leon Williams (4th round, 2006)*
DB Philip Buchanon (#17, 2002)
DB Ed Reed (#24, 2002)
DB Mike Rumph (#26, 2002)
DB James Lewis (6th round, 2002)
DB Sean Taylor (#5, 2004)
DB Alonso Marshall (7th round, 2004)
DB Antrel Rolle (#8, 2005)
DB Kelly Jennings (#31, 2006)*
DB Marcus Maxey (7th round, 2006)*
- - I believe these are players that redshirted.
Not counting redshirt Kelly Jennings, that's 11 (!) first-round players on this team. That's also 41 NFL players, 6 of whom redshirted for the '01 season. Wow.
As always, if I'm incorrect or missing something, feel free to post.

Thanks for the lists, really cool
Lienart and Bush have disappointed, but they're still both young so who knows. What boggles my mind is how bad Cedric Benson is. To anyone who watched the Bears last year, it was obvious who the better RB was. Lovie Smith is the NFL equivalent of Mack Brown - keeping the less talented guys on the field regardless of how bad it hurts the team.

Thanks
Again, I might be the only Ced defender left out there, but I think he can be a good back in the right system. As I said in a different thread, he's a good back in a LenDale White type-mode. That is, he's great at accruing 3 yards and a cloud of dust in a ball control offense, and he's able to push around the defense with a stout run blocking o-line. He's terrible in the Bears offense, which has absolutely no consistent quarterback play. He's not good on passing downs, because he can't catch and is not so great picking up the blitz. But he can't get anywhere on running downs because defenses had no fear whatsoever of Rex Grossman. As much as I love watching the vaunted Bears D and the always fun Sexy Rexy implosion, I firmly believe Benson's best chance of succeeding is elsewhere.

Agreed
JC,
Thanks for the research on the draft pics. I agree about Benson - fairly disappointed so far, but I do believe he'll come around.
