Mack's adjustments for Iowa St
I picked up a few tidbits from Mack Brown's radio show last night:
- He said that they were very pleased with Vondrell McGee's level of play so far, and "he will get more playing time this Saturday."
- Blaine Irby is doing well at TE, but they are going to use him some in the fullback position because of Tiemann's injury.
- They are changing up snap counts, play signals, check-offs, etc., to make sure that Chizik has to guess a little bit.
- He talked about the younger Offensive Line players some, and said that McWhorter won't let them get significant PT until they stop making mistakes in practice. He said it's not fair to put them in the game if they're going to miss an assignment and let Colt get blown up. But, he said they're trying really hard and coming along well.
In the MB-TF.com "Tracking Mack" it mentions that Cosby, Jones, and Shipley are starters at WR with Pittman as a "rotating starter."

So I guess..
Pittman's return is MAck's excuse not to play Kirkendoll or Collins..?

Pittman
Mack did mention on the website that Pittman misses practice on Tuesday because he has a class that conflicts.... what's up with that? Shouldn't they plan their class schedule so that they can make it to practice?
At any rate, they haven't updated the depth chart on the site, because it still lists Sweed and Tiemann as starters. But I'm sure we'll be seeing some of the younger receivers at some point in the game. They have to give Quan a break since he's the primary kick returner (at least in theory).

Just to advance
the increasingly questionable notion that these guys really are student-athletes, I should suggest that maybe its his class needs to be taken in sequence for his major, and perhaps it is only held at that time.
That happened a lot to me once I became an upperclassmen, which is the only reason in the world I would have signed up for an 8am class in three consecutive semesters.

Good for Shipley
Kid always shows up in big games. We should see some young-ins, just not at starter. I'd check to see if they are 2nd string, but that doesn't mean anything, anyway.

I think the key to UT beating Iowa State is
for them to show up.

playing against former assistants
I'm not sure what the record is in college of playing against teams coached by a former assistant in the first year after they left, but in the NFL this is a big problem. Exhibit A - New York Jets gave the Patriots all they could handle in 2005 despite having a much weaker team. The Jets coach Eric Mangini was an assistant at New England for the previous 4 years (at least). Exhibit B. Dallas Cowboys were destroyed and grossly outcoached by the New Orleans Saints in 2006 by, you guessed it, Sean Payton, a Cowboys assistant for the previous two years. Exhibit C. the Arizona Cardinals, coached by Ken Whisenhunt, OC for the Steelers the previous 5 years I think, played their best defense in a decade in beating the Steelers just this year.
Moral of the story for Texas: You've got to do more than change the snap cadence, even for a team as bad as Iowa State.
