Saturday Afternoon & Evening Open Thread
The Horns took care of business in Ames earlier today. Even without a marquee night game, there are lots of intriguing matchups still to kickoff.
I'm most excited to see Texas A&M at Texas Tech, LSU at Kentucky, and Missouri at OU. For the complete listing, see the TV guide below.

Texas A&M / Tech Game
great statement win by the Horns today.
feel free to come by and comment on the game over at The 12th Manchild

The state of Nebraska
officially resigned from the Big 12 in football today.
Sad fact is, as long as this coaching staff stays intact, Husker fans will move to apathy.
I'll use the line before any of you sunsabitches uses it.
We have the dumbest coaches in America.

Corn Nation
I obviously didn't see any of the game. Since we still have a date with Nebraska, want to give us a quick assessment of what happens and what needs to happen to get back to winning?
The audio production
on this telecast makes it sound like LSU is playing Kentucky in a high school stadium.
Study in Contrasts
A&M ran the ball down Tech's throat to jump to early TD lead, but Tech went right back down the field through the air and with the wind as they changed ends.
A&M's secondary looked helpless on the last five pass plays.
Keep me updated
For some reason we're getting the Wisconsin Penn St game on both ABC and ESPN. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the ABC-ESPN collaboration?

TD Tech
Another easy drive. A&M rushes three, Tech runs the ball for 5+ yds. A&M inches up and Tech hits them over the top.
The wind is really a factor. A&M needs to take some time off the clock with their next driver. Otherwise, they will quickly be down at least two scores.
14-7 Tech. 8 min left in the 2nd.
Yeah
I don't expect A&M to hang around very long.

14-7 Tech
They actually ran the majority of their plays on the ground on this series, but man does the Aggie secondary suck! Colt should really be able to feast on them this time around.

Other Big 12
Kansas 31, Baylor 3 at the half. This game has been delayed twice due to lightning.
Nothing has slowed down the Fighting Manginos this season. If they beat CU next week, could Kansas be ranked in the top 15? In football. WOW.
PSU 24 Wisconsin 7
Horns are gonna move on up folks!
Also, USC 10 Arizona 7. Hmmmm

A&M really nice drive so far,
but facing 3rd and 12. Only 2 min left in the half.
Goodson has amazing speed and McGee and Lane punishing Tech straight ahead.
Aggies need points though.
That sounds like plenty of time for Tech

Heard style hit on Harrell
Uncalled late hit on Harrell. Aggie player takes two steps and unloads on Harrell. WOW.
Fucking dirty aggies!!!!
Do it again.... taking down Harrell long after the play is over! Shades of McCoy last year.
May they roast in hell.

Aggie with another late hit on qb

They deserve that one after the missed call.
Red Raiders scored in under a minute, BTW.
Woods with the Thumbs down
Tech you have your own symbol
Aggies Classless and Soulless Program
Teams eventually model their coach - and that explains the classless play of the Aggies over the last few years. Late hit on Harrell - beyond dirty. Late hit on McCoy - beyond dirty. Let the AD back their piece of shit coach and make a joke of the program.

Oregon is dominating WSU
I think they'll beat USC too.
Could be that Cal and Oregon are the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the country. I'd love to see Oregon take on tOSU in a BCS Bowl somewhere.

Shannon Woods
displays a big thumbs down after scoring a TD. I wonder how that makes Aggy feel?
21-7 Tech, 0:25 til half
Horns Will Really Struggle With Tech
Our soft coverage and their crossing underneath stuff is a terrible combination. Throw in the fact that we do not have a dominant run game and look for Tech to roll by our beloved Horns. Just a terrible matchup for us.
Would Rate Trussel Best College Coach
Last year - they replace all 11 defensive starters and march to national title game. This year - they replace all starting backfield, all receivers, the Heisman Trophy winner and will be back in the national title game. Unbelievable player development and coaching.
nbc has to feel stupid, right?
notre dame is so bad at football right now that it really is unwatchable. i'd rather watch 3 hrs of this is our country commercials than that slopfest. also, looks like that lsu-kentucky game is gonna finish with a great second half.
too bad it's not in hd
i'd love to see that tablecloth shirt he's wearing in 720p.
Coach Knight
closes with high praise for Ron Franklin as a commentator. I couldn't agree more. There isn't a voice I'd rather hear calling a game.

true story.
i once sold him a bottle of bug killer at the lowe's on steck in austin. WHATTA GUY! also...how cool is it that mike leach decided to shred the wrecking crew with a bunch of counter plays. he's trying to push fran off the ledge. great stuff.
Leach
is calling a nice game. As long as A&M is only rushing three, he is going to run the ball and occasionally hit them over the top.
Darnell is shortening the game by forcing the run but they're about to fall behind by three scores. Not good for Aggie fans and certainly difficult to overcome if your offense can't pass.
I think you might be suffering OU hangover
Chase Daniel will be the great equalizer. I look for a shoot-out at worst, a Missou win at best. TOs might dictate on this one.
I'm basing this on
OU's dominance in Norman. Aside from the TCU surprise a few years ago, it seems like every time OU plays a "big game" at home, they pretty much roll - Miami, Alabama, etc.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 13, 2007 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions
And they just gave the numbers
Stoops is 50-2 at home. Both were surprise upsets if I remember correctly, I think one is TCU and the other is Oklahoma State.
He gets them ready for the big ones at home.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 13, 2007 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Traditionally they kick ass after OU weekend
but this is a capable animal coming in, a predator on par with the OU attack.
The abstractions look great until the shit hits the fan.
True
on the flip side, they don't play a lot of big games at home, so the numbers are a bit slanted.
But its my gut telling me this could get ugly. We'll see how reliable my gut is, and then I'll probably go back to analyzing abstractions.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 13, 2007 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions
I had the same feeling early in the week
about Missou. But except for the Nebraska game, I haven't watched them in depth. So my earlier intuition has slipped a little rolling into Saturday.
This will be one of the biggest games for Missouri in a long, long time. They can buy a top 10 ticket with a win.
Bye bye Aggie
Hope you enjoyed sitting on top of the South Division while it lasted.
35-7 Tech

35-7 the relative IQ difference
between Leach and Fran.
Hell yeah, this is a great game, much better than
Tech/A&M, although it is fun watching the Aggies run the 2 Minute offense exclusively with the QB draw.

TD Missouu!!!!
My college football head is about to explode - too much good stuff happening right now.
Kentucky backs can sure find a tiny crease
Jackson has been amazing.
UK gets too conservative in the red zone
Second straight drive that three runs have stalled the drive in the red zone
LSU keeps making key penalties
UK's firepower is somewhat depleted, but LSU has helped them stay in it.
This is going to be an awful day
OU is going to blow out Missouri, and with the LSU loss, that will put them right back in the driver's seat for the NC game.
Dammit Les Miles. I hate you.
finley
did they not use finley at all this game?
No, they really didn't have to but Greg
Only likes to use him once every three seasons, and only for one half.
OU 17-10
That's not a blow-out so far.
Anyone know how well Missou adjusts at halftime. Been watching LSU-Ky, so I've missed the middle part of this game.
LSU
I didn't like the run on 4th and 2. And if you're going to insist on it, why not put Perrileaux in there so that you have an additional option?
Four consecutive runs
When are coaches going to learn...conservative never wins games. Ever.
How did this idea even get into their heads, I'm quite certain they've never seen any evidence to the contrary.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 13, 2007 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions
what a year in college football!!!
LSU goes down... I think that's the 7th team in the top 5 which has lost this year so far.
What really hurts is the nagging feeling that if Jamaal holds on to the ball and Mack quits being stubbornly stupid about his linebackers we'd be right in the mix.
Oh well... as a fan, I'm still enjoying the heck out of the year. I just hope this is the one where six or seven teams end up bunched together with legitimate claims to be the best and blow the BCS wide open...

I wish we had a playoff system!
by RemiMagnus on Oct 13, 2007 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions
oh man...
that would be the biggest thing ever for CFB. Look what March Madness did for basketball - that's what December Delirium would do for football...
Plus, if it was a big enough playoff, it would encourage more big games in the regular season, and personally, I really liked the Ohio State series. Wish we'd see more of those, both here and around the country.
by agent orange on Oct 13, 2007 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Because of the money and hype
that ESPN/ABC can generate, it would take a disaster to make the college presidents change their minds. What we think is merely a wish.
If we had a playoff system
nobody would have given a damn over the past few weeks. Instead of "the craziest football season ever!!!", we would see #1 regularly and quietly change hands throughout the season, and nobody would care because this would all be sorted out in the real season that begins in December.
Anybody remember a college basketball season that everyone was screaming "Craziest thing I've ever seen!!" in November?
No?
Nether do, I.
So lets go back to enjoying the only real sport we have left and stop begging to have the joy-of-college-football taken away from us, shall we?

Cal looks to be in position
to inherit the #1 ranking, but they're struggling against a mediocre Oregon State team right now.
Buckeyes? Anyone? Anyone want the #1 position?
mizzou
woot up by one!
OU 35, Mizzou 24
It's 8:42 and OU still sucks; unfortunately they're sucking up Mizzou turnovers.
Mizzou!
You have found so many ways to disappoint not only your own fans, but the fans of every team in the Big 12 at one point. 24-23 and you let OU score, fine, then you choke and let them run back a fumble. Wait... NICE GAIN ON THIRD AND TEN! MIZZOU IS RIGHT BACK IN THIS GAME IF THEY SCORE HERE!
Oh wait... why do I do this to myself?
Reggie Smith
Is an idiot. What is wrong with OU's special teams? Is that where they put their dumbest starters? Just a series of dumb decisions and f-ups today, plus a couple of dumb plays against Texas and Colorado. Has anyone else noticed that the Sooners special teams are the specialist special teams in the XII?
in the Auburn/Arkansas game...
I think I just saw the worst punt return ever...
The Auburn returner catches the ball with a good 15-yard cushion, then stands in one place and jukes a bunch until the defender shows up and tackles him, still juking...
by agent orange on Oct 13, 2007 8:50 PM CDT reply actions
Mizzou can't run.
That's the only advantage OU has but it is probably enough for this game.
Mizzou couldn't muster the killer instinct when it had the edge and with 6 minutes left, they're looking like road kill unless OU turns it over. A field goal will put the game out of reach.
Cal is down 10
6 minutes to play. Craziest season ever. Nobody wants to be #1.
anyone have that FACE RAPE play on youtube link??

Cal QB makes HUUUUGE mistake
Down goes Cal. Cal had ball on 10 yard line with 14 seconds to go, down 3 and no timeouts. QB scrambles, doesn't get into end zone and clock expires without a chance to kick the point.
Arkansas
redeems 3 hours of boring hell with a last minute touchdown drive to take the lead with just over a minute left. 7-6.
The Ohio State University
Is the new upset target.....probably. God you gotta love this season.

Six undefeateds left?!?!?!
Ohio State, Kansas, Hawaii, South Florida, Boston College, Arizona St.
Am I forgetting anyone?
So with our impressive performance and
FSU, Wisconsin, Mizzou, Cincinnati, and Wisconsin going down in front of us....we could be ranked 12-14....with a big win next weekend and the usual upsets....we should be in good shape to control our destiny and possibly, just possibly be in a BCS Bowl.
This season, 10-2 should do it.

Wildcat fever...
Gotta catch that Wildcat fever! Exciting game, great performances by the boys in blue. BCG's not the coach who's got the bluegrass fired up!!!
By the way, that loss was the first by a #1 ranked team in the regular season (not bowl games) since the OU loss to K-State in the Big XII Championship.
Go Wildcats!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've read this three times
and I still don't understand what I'm missing.
The top ranked team has lost several times this year already.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 14, 2007 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions
Sorry...
It was quite late when I posted that...
Via the ESPN boxscore...
The last time a No. 1 team was beaten during the regular season was Dec. 6, 2003, when Kansas State upset top-ranked Oklahoma 35-7 for the Big 12 title.
Still don't get it
Even after reading the article. #1 loses all the time. How often does a #1 team go wire to wire?
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 14, 2007 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Re:
Here's how:
- #1 USC went undefeated the entire year.
- #1 USC went undefeated the entire regular season, until losing to Texas in the MNC (but the article does not count Bowl games).
- #1 Ohio State went undefeated the entire regular season as well, until losing to Florida in the MNC.
- #1 USC went undefeated as long as they held the #1 spot; they lost to Stanford with a #2 ranking. #1 LSU went undefeated until losing to UK.
Thus, they became the first team to lose as a #1 team during the regular season since OU lost to K-State in 2003 during the Big XII Championship (which is apparently counted as part of the regular season).
