Aggie Meltdown
Great banter between Red Blooded and Agros on 12th Man Child. It could be much worse than what we have at 5-2.

There's a 'Fran Out' report on EDSBS
Anyone hear anything concrete?
TheTicket is reporting a buyout
Now the fun REALLY starts as they do a search only to get turned down by the first 12 candidates.
Texags
quotes Rivals (scroll down to 2:12PM), but I have not looked for that story:

Isnt the tech-a&m series about tied by now?

question...
at what point do we stop thinking and talking about aTm as the second-best team in the state?
They're clearly behind Tech now, I don't think that's really arguable based on overall and head-to-head records. And who would you bet on in a TCU-aTm game? Hard to say on that one, TCU has been really disappointing this year...

After that UH/Rice Game...
... you have to wonder if either one of them could hang a 50 on the ags at this point.
Body of work...
I think that's a perception thing. Texas had some lean years in the 80's and 90's when they certainly might not have been considered the 2nd best team in the state over a 5 or 10 year stretch. If you make it fluid - then sure Tech is certainly ahead of them currently, but over the past 20 or 30 years I think we'd all put Texas first, followed by A&M.
It's still a school with tons of tradition that is a prime job, and that tells you all you need to know. If the rumors about Tuberville and Tedford are true, that reinforces that fact. Do you think they'd go coach at Tech or TCU?
Great signature by the way...RIP Don Adams..

Cap'n Dhab
was, as far as I can remember, the only ostensible Longhorn "fan" to get run off from BON. His offenses included idiocy, racist language, extremely poor grammar (and his spelling was worse than Wells'), extremely contrary opinions repeated over and over for the sake of inciting general irritation (though it was later proven that this is not a ban-able offense), idiocy, attempting to sneak back in after being banned for the above, idiocy, refusal to accept the nickname I bestowed upon him, refusal to leave BON and start his own blog where he could spew idiocy to his heart's content, and other assorted nonsense that finally drove PB to distraction.
Only the Powers that Be know for sure, but I think I can count on two hands the number of people who have been BON-Banned. If I were Captain Dhab, I would hang my head in shame to know that I share that dishonor with brazos, the least pleasant Aggie ever (and what a statement that is), and the Crying Sooner Kid's mom (who still insists that he had just been punished for something else, but I don't care, he's still my screensaver).
Criminy, I've been reading BON too damn long.
What is his real username
Since you guys bestowed this nickname on him, what is his real username? This dhab fellow sounds like a clown and i need a good laugh. What is his real username so i can look him up?

Nobody is ever mean on this site and since there are so many intelligent and thougthful posters on here i wonder how they would take their wrath out on this guy.
In the month and a half i have been on here i don't think i have ever seen someone act like an asshole/douchebag and say stupid stuff to stir shit up.

TOA must be Dhab, and this is the greatest scam since Scott "The Bull" Ware.
How Dhab tricked PB into going to the Rose Bowl with him last year is just part of the great deception.

This has probably made the rounds
but I found it last week regarding the A&M-TTU goal post incident:
HOW CLASSY AGGIE BEGAN....(for aggies only)-- don't let Red Raiders know!
Ain't much has changed in Lubbick sense the last time we got dooky stomped by the Red Rayders. Same thang ever time we go out there. The Fighting Texas Aggie Football Team gets a wippin on the field and the 12th Man gets a wippin in the stands. How ever I must say this is the first time The Spider ever done had a goal post rammed up his tailpipe.
I was jess a standin there doin my hand jesters and practicin my post game yells then all the sudden hear come this goal post outta nowheres. Like any good Aggie that sees a long lean objeck comin at um I turned my back and bent over.... Thunk!!!
It was a little more than The Spider could handle. I was a lifted airborn and my legs was a kickin and my arms was a flailin. Don't tell no one but I caught Mr. Mackinny upside the eyeball with my flailin Spider arm. I aint never hit no one so hard in my life, but I aint never been a human mannakin either. It was all adrenalin.
Any ways, I was finnaly lowered enuff and a four or five good Ag fellas grabbed my arms and yanked me from the death rod. It sounded like a cork pulled from a wine bottle and both my sholders was pulled outta socket, but I stayed there and finished my yells before I let um take me to the hospital. The Doc says my shoulders would get better with time, but he says my dooky hole won't never be the same. It just kinda flaps open and shut now soes I decided to name it the Swingin Gate after one a my favert Aggie plays. Spider allways finds the positives in everthang.
And aktually it was kinda good that the 12th Man got our butts kicked cuzz it takes the attention away from our football team gettin there butts kicked. We really caint complane about the offishiatin this year soes its good that Tech gave us sumpin else to complane about.
Beat the hell outta uo!!!

Top state programs
JT is absolutely right. 5 years under Frans does not a program make. A&M is still the 2nd best program in the state for several reasons:
- Body of work. If you slice it by the past 10, 15, 20, 30 etc they are consistently there. Recruiting violations notwithstanding.
- Tangibles. They've got the cash and the willingness to pay the big bucks. They will try to bring in someone who demands a big paycheck. They've forked over cha-ching to improve their facilities and attract more talent.
- Intangibles. Those stupid "traditions" we all despise. But for college football, they're golden.
- Although they both suck, Lubbock sucks slightly more than College Station.
If Leach were to leave tomorrow, Tech would easily fall behind A&M in terms of top destinations. Leach is a good coach in a great situation, and he's making the absolute most of it.
All this being said, if Tech continues to put together some decent seasons as they have the past few years this could change. But I don't seriously think we will be moving Tech ahead of A&M unless their next coach implodes the way Fran did.
my question then is
at what point does the scale tip?
points 1-4 will always be there for A&M, so what would it take for Tech to overtake them?

4.
Do you have any evidence of this? I was born in Dallas, was raised in Austin, spent four years in Lubbock, and have not once been to College Station. I don't want to speak about College Station. But I absolutely loved West Texas and especially Lubbock, and have had a very difficult time producing things I disliked about the area when prompted.
The basic criticism of Lubbock follows along the lines of 1) it is small and 2) it smells. Perhaps a 3) about the dry county issue, but that's nothing new to anyone who has lived in certain parts of the greater Dallas area and it certainly isn't nearly as much an issue as it is probably advertised as.
Why do you personally think Lubbock sucks? I loved it. It's over twice the size of College Station and is a large enough city so that you really aren't missing anything there that you'd get in Austin, save for the volume of live music, though there are plenty of opportunities to hear live music in Lubbock. It's not as if it lacks movie theatres, eateries, bars, clubs, bowling alleys, etc.
I never wake up here in ATX and say "God I'm so glad that I am out of Lubbock because now I can ____." Cities are cities. Paris is London is Dallas is Austin is Lubbock in terms of what I need to do in it; get drunk, enjoy good company, and perhaps watch a football game or 17.

Lubbock
I'll give you the fact that Lubbock beats the hell out of College Station in just about every measureable category, but it is severly lacking when put up against Austin, DFW, etc. Buddy Holly/Texas Ave is no 6th st. Crickets/The Spoon/LoneStar(?) is no....take your pick of Austin bars. I love the people in Lubbock (really) but I'm bored in a day or two. No such problem in Austin.
For the record...
I'm not crazy about 6th street. I don't like going to bars and then shouting at people, though I would if I were single, since it would be a lot easier to pick up girls if they couldn't understand what I was saying. But I'm not single.
I will absolutely put the Lonestar Oyster bar on Slide against any bar I've ever been to in Austin, Dallas, London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Florence, Rome, Venice, Vancouver, Copenhagen, Cancun, Houston, LA, on and on and on. I have not been to a bar in my entire life anywhere in the world that I would prefer going to at this moment than Lonestar Oyster Bar on Slide in Lubbock, Texas. You can ditto that about Crickets and any bar I've ever been to on 6th street. And you can even ditto that on The Spoon and virtually any bar I've been to in Austin which, in my opinion, has some really terrible bars (as does Lubbock, Texas, as does any city, in the entire world).
It's just different strokes for different folks. But you tell me why I need to enjoy any bar on 6th street, any bar in Austin, more than Crickets, The Spoon, or Lonestar on Slide (and I'm partial to the 34th street one as well), and I'll concede the point. I go to these places to drink, socialize with friends, and enjoy familiar company. I can do those things cheaper and in a quieter and friendlier environment at any of the three bars listed than at any place on 6th street, any place I've been in Austin in my entire life.
And for the record, I really, truly love Austin, Texas. I was raised here, live here now, consider it home, and think the world of this fine city.

So name somewhere
I'd want to go on 6th street? I can handle west, namely Little Woodrows area, but everything east is loud, difficult to get to, or over crowded. I'd much prefer drinking cheap beer at Crickets, which is much easier to access, quiet enough to communicate with people I'm there with, and otherwise just a nicer place than most any bar on 6th street.
Why do you love 6th street so much? The novelty wore off for me years ago. I know a lot of people who don't get a kick out of 6th street anymore, who haven't gotten a kick out of it for years. I go there when out-of-towners are visiting, but otherwise steer clear by design.
Tell me what I'm missing. Do you enjoy shouting? Expensive drinks? Bad parking? What am I supposed to miss about 6th street?

you're not missing anything
aside from a few music venues, 6th street sucks.
by the other Andrew on Oct 16, 2007 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm with you.
Let me make it clear: I am not trying to say that Lubbock is better than Austin, that Crickets is objectively better than 6th street. For what I like to do when I go out with friends, which is get drunk on the cheap and be at a place where I can hear others talking, I happen to prefer Crickets to many of the places on 6th street, especially east 6th. Finding a parking spot is frustrating.
I used to love 6th street. I think there are a lot of positive things to say about it, but it just isn't my thing anymore.
It is my opinion that some of the criticisms of Lubbock are overblown.

wrong point of view
Take the point of view of a suburban recruit looking for the limelight...do you think they have the same point of view you do? Can Lubbock or College Station hold a candle?
Same with the perspective of a big time college football coach, someone who's got national notoriety. Yeah, Bobby Knight is at Tech but I would make the argument he went there to escape the attention not build a winning program under intense scrutiny.
Austin is not for everyone, you are absolutely right. But it does offer more things that your typical Houston/Dallas area recruit is either accustomed to, or is desperately trying to be a part of than College Station or Lubbock.
In order to change this mentality and make Tech the #2 program in the state, first and foremost Tech has to do what they have failed to do consistently in the past....schedule and win the big non-conference games, win the bowl games etc etc. A big non-conference win will give the program something other than the occasional hanging tight or beating UT or OU, or continuously "whooping" A&M to hang their hat on and to distance themselves from A&M. Do that a few times over the next several years, continue to put together winning seasons, and land one or two players that flourish and gain national notoriety and I believe the tide would turn.
For several years before Ricky and Major, UT was in the doldrums. Yet these two players got a lot of people's attention and brought national exposure back. Next thing you know, Texas recruits several highly regarded classes and puts together a 10 win season after another and wins bowl games. I think the same could eventually happen with Tech, maybe even on the coattails of Harrell & Crabtree...
Re:
Question though: Does College Station have a recruiting advantage over Lubbock? If so, it can't be for size, it doubtfully will be for the virtues of the city. If it's for any reason it is proximity to other areas. And that might be a really important distinction. But College Station also happens to house a school that is, traditionally, a much more important Texas school than Texas Tech in a lot of ways, chief among them the football history. Fortunately, history can change. It hasn't yet as evidenced by the recruiting deficit that Tech has relative to A&M, though we're two ships passing in the night somewhere in the not-so-distant future in that regard.
Tech is also willing to throw a lot of money at coaches, so we can solve some of those problems. Fortunately in the two sports that I care about, we don't have to solve anything; I'm as content as content can be with Coaches Knight and Leach.
I'm going to stop quoting you because everyting else you say I agree with vehemently. Tech needs to command a stronger schedule to increase its recruiting. Losses to strong OOC opponents can't possibly hurt our local recruiting; we already lose to Ok. State in Texas. Wins are huge, and I honestly feel that the kind of football we play lends itself more to upsets of great schools than what other teams play. Some mid major is never going to overcome the recruiting deficit they have to face against, say, Texas A&M. More often than not, we do overcome that recruiting deficit due to good coaching.
Tech is never going to move to Austin, so I think it's premature to say we'll ever be able to compete in recruiting with them. But we don't have to; what Tech needs to focus on right now are 1) scheduling bigger games to increase exposure, 2) win a Big 12 Championship, and 3) produce recruits that play on Sundays. If we can do those three things while maintaining our persistent, annual respectable CFB record, I think our team is only going to improve. That's my hope, at least.

My Two Cents
There's only one school in the Big XII that hasn't had a losing season since the inaugural season: Texas Tech. 5-1 in the last 6 against A&M. And as for you comment BMG about not winning their bowl games? Did you not catch the thrashing Tech gave Cal in the Holiday Bowl a couple years ago? What about the bowl last year against Minnesota, where they overcame the largest deficit in Bowl history.
There's a LOT more to be excited about in Lubbock than there is in College Station right now. And I'd also argue that all this talk of 'tradition' is WAAAAY overated. Does Oregon have tradition? What about West Virginia? South Florida? No, none do, but they're continuing to get better and better recruits. One of the biggest reasons is freshmen are given a chance to play right away and contribute.
That leads me to Michael Crabtree. He's going to be in discussions for national awards in the next couple of years, and that's just going to remind other stud recruits that they can come in at Tech and get on the field and put up bigtime numbers right away. Not sit and wait for an opportunity to play like you typically do at Michigan, Texas, and other schools with more 'tradition'. The tides are changing, and schools like A&M are going to continue to be more irrelevant unless they worry more about finding another solid program builder like Slocum, or an innovator like Urban Meyer or Mike Leach. Half-ass clowns like Franchione and Mike Price aren't going to cut it anymore...this isn't the 80s and 90s. Tech has clearly surpassed A&M IMO in relevance, consistency, and productivity since the turn of the century.

saying that jamaal charles would win the heisman :-(
Side Note...
Barring injury or a severe dropoff, Crabtree will win the Biletnikoff this year. He leads the nation and is far above all other receivers in 5 major receiving statistics.
Receptions = 78 (NCAA 2nd = 60)
Yards = 1244 (2nd = 884)
Receiving Yards / Game = 177.71 (2nd = 147.33)
Rec/Game = 11.14 (2nd = 9.67)
Touchdowns = 17 (2nd = 11)
The only category he's not leading so far is in yards/catch.
Yards/Catch (NCAA 12th) = 15.95 (No player above him has more than 46 catches)
looks like it only goes to receivers
and while he's catching lots of passes
isn't he more of a back?

Crabtree
Was a Top-50 national basketball recruit out of Dallas Carter. Could have played at a number of big-time D-1 schools for hoops. Not sure why he chose Tech for football, but I think it's because he knew he could get on the field immediately even though he was techinically 'raw' as a WR (played QB in High School). Once on the field, he's dominated.
And for those who haven't seen him. This isn't some typical 5'10" white speedy WR that you often see at Tech. He's 6'3", REAL fast, pretty damn good hands, and really incredible going from 1st-5th gear after the catch considering his relatively big frame.

"Paris is London is Austin is Lubbock"
You had me until this statement, at which point I believe you shot yourself in the foot.
There are definitive differences between New York City and Austin, and even greater differences between Austin and the small town I grew up in. For one thing, each successive move introduced me to a greater diversity, not only demographical diversity, but diversity of attitude, culture, and thought.
I like Lubbock. Admittedly, I've been through only in passing, although I have been drunk there. Lubbock is certainly different from College Station in that it decidedly has its own West Texas, boot-kickin, Buddy Holly kind of identity. College Station, save for the presence of a massive university, is indistinguishable from any other East Texas town. It lacks its own flavor.
The problem with this debate is that you are having it with a group of people who initially chose to live in Austin, and that somewhat predisposes them to certain preferences in lifestyle. For me, those preferences would include hiking in Austin's greenbelt, involving myself in Austin's film community, soaking up the free-and-liberal quirk that gives Austin a wide-spread reputation [even here in New York], etc., etc. And I don't feel terribly confident that I could all of that in Lubbock.
But that doesn't make Lubbock a bad place.
The last several road trips I've taken through West Texas have given me an appreciation for the vibe that seems to be inherent in that kind of bold isolation. I may be ignorant to the realities of actually living there, but in passing it seems less worldly than Austin, and I mean that in a good way. It seems to have retained a "Last Picture Show" sensibility that I fear will have disappeared entirely within the next generation.
It is not at all difficult for me to imagine someone preferring Lubbock to Austin, but you are not likely to find that someone here on this blog.
So when you say these cities are pretty much the same, you lose me, because if we ever get to the point where I can go to Albany and feel like I'm in Austin, I'll probably fucking shoot myself.

good Lubbock vs. Austin discussion...
but I'm still not sold at all that Lubbock isn't better (to more recruits, that is...) than College Station.
Also... just what does Tech have to do to supplant aTm? And for that matter, what does aTm have to do to fall behind Tech???
Sure, the ags can fall back on that championship in '39 and all, but at some point you have to look at the present day, and there, Tech is most definitely ahead of the aggies. It's not a quirk or an upset when you've beat a team that much. And their historical head-to-head is within a few years of being dead even.
I think it's a form of traditionalism actually; the perception that because aTm is a bigger school it must be better. Or better because you've heard that for a longer stretch of time. The kind of thinking that keeps putting Notre Dame into BCS bowls it has no business in, because, by golly, they're Notre Dame!!! It takes a while for perception to catch up to reality, especially in such a tradition-oriented enterprise as college football. But the reality on the ground, which perception will sooner or later catch up to, is that Tech is now the clear #2 team in the state.
by agent orange on Oct 18, 2007 1:10 AM CDT reply actions
ATM has way more money
A&M has way more money than Tech and thus better facilities and can pay their coaches a bigger salarie and with that bigger salarie should have a better coach.
Notre Dame may not have earned those BCS bids because of how they played but they still are one of the premier programs in the country and will always be that. Tech is the number two program in the state based on performance only but in terms of recrutiing, facilities, passion and just an overrall grade A&M is still better.
Tech needs to win a conference championship to supplant A&M or go to a BCS bid.
Also Tech still gets the other teams scraps in terms of recruting and which is why it is amazing how much success mike leach has had since he never pulls in a top 10 class or even a top 20 class.
