Who are you rooting for in the Kansas-A&M game?
I'm going to root A&M, and here's why:
Reasons to root for Kansas:
- They're playing against Big 12 South team. Normally, I'd root for a Big 12 South team to lose, but not in this case (see below)
- It's A&M, duh!
Reasons to root for A&M:
- KU is ranked ahead of us at #9. This is my highest priority, even over rivals losing. If we want to have any shot at earning an at-large BCS bid, we need as many teams as possible that are ranked higher than us to lose.
- Computer love. Our remaining schedule consists of zero BCS-ranked teams. If you haven't noticed, we're the only BCS ranked team to get absolutely no love from the computers (as in zeroes from all 6 computers). Beating Baylor and Nebraska won't help anything. We need to beat quality teams. We should root for Tech, OSU, and A&M to play well, so that a victory against them would make the computers like us a little more. Because of this, I'm going to root for A&M against Kansas, and I'm going to root for them when they play #6 OU and #13 Missouri.
- We control our destiny with A&M in Big 12 South race. As long as we win out, it doesn't matter how well A&M plays. They could win out the rest of the way, but as long as we beat them head-to-head on T+1, we'd advance over them because of the tie-breaker. Of course, this is assuming that we're even in the position to get to the Big 12 championship game (OU loses twice).
- Possibility of Fran staying if they have a decent year? Highly doubtful regardless because of this recent scandal.

Kansas
I'd like to play a 1-loss Kansas team (I'm assuming they'll drop atleast 1 in North play) in the Big Xii Title game (I'm assuming we'll win out and hoping OU loses 2....hopefully to TAMU and OSU).
If that happens, we win and are Fiesta Bowl bound. If not, say hello to the Holiday Bowl....if they'll take us.

KU
That is another way of thinking about this.
If Kansas wins out and ends up with a really high rank, and then Texas somehow makes it to the Big 12 championship game and beats them, then maybe that could boost us up to a real high ranking, possibly the MNC game if chaos in other conferences ensues?
I was really thinking more of getting a BCS game via at-large. Do you really see OU losing twice?
I think we control our destiny in the at-large picture more than winning the South. That's why I want all teams ranked ahead of us to lose.
But since my goal was just getting a BCS bid, it wouldn't matter how good or bad KU was, or if it's Mizzou instead. If we were somehow fortunate enough to get there, then all we'd have to do is win the game and we're in a BCS bowl.

Re:

Not unless Sam Bradford gets a pinched nerve/"stinger" in their 2nd to last game @TTU (on the 1st drive, on a QB sneak at 4th and goal from the 1) and then go on to lose a home game to their in state rival the next game because Brad Bradford (I'm assuming that's his dad's name) insists his throwing arm is fine.
Strange things like that have happened. Where you ask? I can't remember.
by bleed burnt orange on Oct 24, 2007 3:18 AM CDT up reply actions
You forgot to add...
that the following year Bradford comes nowhere near fulfilling expectations and brings the entire team down with him.
I'm rooting for aTm. The reasons above are good ones, but my real rooting interest is to see Fran stay another year. If he wins out (minus UT) AND wins a bowl game he might avoid the noose.
that made me laugh out loud
Good for you!
Holiday Bowl
of Texas vs USC wouldn't be bad either. I'd still prefer the $$$ of a BCS bowl though of course.
by goingforthecorner on Oct 24, 2007 1:51 AM CDT up reply actions
I'd prefer
The dollars of a BCS bowl, too. But I don't see one dime of it
BCS money
gets divided between all Big 12 schools evenly, so from the money angle, all that matters is two big 12 schools get the bid, not that UT gets the bid.
But
We'd still get lots of $ with the higher exposure.
I wonder how much money Boise State got in merchandise sales after their game. I bet even OU got some increased sales just for being involved in that game.

Like I said
Lots of money but none goes to me. So why would I care how much my team gets? My student loans don't get reduced any more and athletes get bigger locker rooms and more free pairs of sweatpants to wear to class?
I just enjoy a good game. Would you rather play Wake Forest-type team in the Orange or USC in the Holiday?
KU a 2.5 pt favorite
I don't see KU winning at A&M, but I don't really care either way.

i hope the aggies get stomped into the ground
we lost two games
i've accepted it
i hope we win out
if not, no biggie, that's just the way things go sometimes
but that doesn't change the fact that I LOVE to see aggie misery
and aggie delusions of grandeur really aggravate me
whatever bowl we end up in, I hope it's quality competition
and that we take it serious
besides
we still have to beat nebraska, let's not get carried away
even norte dame has won a game
AMEN!!!!!
At large bid will not happen...
There is a < 5% Texas could pull an at large bid. Our SOS is absolutely awful, and we will not have a quality win at all this season. There is no way anyone that remains on our schedule can get themselves ranked to the top 15 to make us look good. Additionally, there are too many other teams out there (Michigan/Ohio State, Oregon, Cal, USC, South Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, VaTech) that may not win their conference but have the ability to win out and will rank higher than us. Seriously guys, this is the longest of long shots. It will not happen.
It is more likely(10% to 25% chance) that OU could drop 2 games in the big 12. They looked average versus Mizzou (capitalizing on many Mizzou errors) and looked awful versus Iowa State. Put up a turd like that against Tech on the road, OSU, or A&M and they could drop a couple.
What you want to see is Kansas win. Don't give A&M anything to play for the rest of the season. Let them continue to implode, it makes for good television and office banter. We all know Fran is going to go, so what better than for A&M to be looking for a coach at the same time as Michigan, LSU (potentially), Nebraska, and maybe another team or two in the SEC (Arkansas, Georgia, Auburn if Tommy bolts). My guess is that A&M won't be the least desirable of these destinations, but it won't be anywhere close to the most desirable either.
At this point be happy with a 10 win season (hopefully) and a Holiday Bowl birth. Hope these team plays someone like Oregon, USC etc and finish the season on a high note. I've been saying this all along- 2008 and 2009 this team will be the real deal once again. End this season well and watch it carry over for next year.
Not so fast
While UT chances of an at large bid is probably ~5 to 10%, the same could be said for most other teams that don't control their own destiny, so I would not give up on it just yet.
There are 10 Slots
6 go to the conference champions
Lets assume that both teams in the championship game are conference champions
4 slots left, I am going to assume that one goes to the Pac 10 and one goes to the SEC.
If Texas wins out, it is a pretty good assumption that they will climb into the top 14 of the BCS.
Given that, I would think that Texas would have a good shot at one of those last two spots when competing with the second best ACC, Big East, Big 10.
Things that can hurt UT chances (two of six probably means no BCS for Texas):
- Hawaii or Boise St takes one of the slots. They have to get into the top 12 in the BCS or top 16 if a BCS champion is below them.
- OU wins out and then loses the Big 12 championship.
- KU or Missouri wins out and loses to OU. Even if this happens, I don't know if a BCS bowl will want KU or Missouri over UT. At this point it is a popularity contest among who is left in the top 14. Maybe a one loss KU, but probably not a two loss Missouri.
- Virginia Tech and BC win out and play each other for a rematch in the ACC championship or BC and Virginia wins out. Two loss Virginia would not be a given over Texas.
- Undefeated or even one loss Ohio St loses to a two loss Michigan.
- West Virginia and South Florida both win out.
Good point about the coaching carrousel
I hadn't considered that so many bigtime programs would be hiring simultaneously. You're right, that puts A&M at a huge disadvantage.
Although, I'm not sure the coaches they're looking at (Mike Price comes to mind), would fit at those other schools.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 24, 2007 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions
We Need Kansas To Win, Ags and NU To Lose Out
Having both those programs down does nothing for us. It's bad for our SOS, bad for the conference, and especially bad for UT. If we lose, we get TFH, if we win we get nothing because we're supposed to anyway. Losing out-->coaching changes-->programs off the mat=better Big 12 conference/UT SOS.
Go Jayhawks!
I'm rooting for Kansas, as I think it'd be VERY interesting to see an undefeated Kansas-1 loss Mizzou matchup. Even better would be seeing an undefeated Kansas upset OU in the Big XII Championship.
Plus, it's always fun to see the amazing density + circumference of Mangenius Part Deux.
Good discussion
There are good reasons for both sides.
I like this game because it's a win-win for me. Either the #9 team loses or A&M loses. Don't have a problem with either one!

BCS Bid
I keep saying this because I don't want everyone to get their hopes up for one, but we're not going to a BCS game. I'm telling you, it's the Holiday Bowl most likely, or the Cotton/Alamo. Therefore I'm rooting for A&M to eat major shit. Sure Kansas is full of short fat idiots who think Jesus rode on dinosaurs but shit, it's A&M. You should never root for A&M. Like...ever.
I agree
I never root for A&M no matter the circumstances.
By the way, I would think its gonna be the Cotton or the Holiday bowl that we go to.
I think the Cotton Bowl would love to have an old school game, like a Texas v Alabama or something to that affect.
how bout texas/florida in the cotton?
if florida makes the sec champ game and loses to lsu, they've got 3 losses and are out of bcs. Cotton gets sec #2? 3? Dallas would be drooling at that thought.
Don't see Florida
The Cotton may want an SEC west team seeing UF may not travel well to Dallas after a loss.
How about Texas-Bama ... Major gets a crack at Texas as a coach
I'm guessing a 3-loss UF team goes to the Citrus or Capital One
Florida won't .....
....lose another game. They'll finish the regular season without a loss and then Urban Meyer will throttle poor ol'Less. Florida will play in the Sugar Bowl as the SEC Champ.
Boy, this is a tough one
Normally, I would ALWAYS root for a team from the great state of Texas, but the Ags have been pissing me off something fierce the last few years. If this was TTech or SMU or UNT or UTEP, it would be easy. But the Ags, grrrrr.
Kansas has been sooo bad for sooo long that they have the underdog thing going for them as well. They also have a little bitty QB doing a Flutie imitation which is hard to hate.
Then there is the Blue vs. Maroon thing. I go Blue on that one.
We (the Longhorns) need our future opponents to be as impressive as possible when we beat them. Plus, I would like to ruin a potentially good season for the Ags. So I am rooting for them to beat Kansas, but it is an uncomfortably close call. Hopefully, Kansas will expose something in the Ags that we can exploit when we play them.
by Arby A on Oct 25, 2007 5:55 AM CDT reply actions
Something to expose?
Oh, like, they don't have a defense and their offense is a belligerently stupid, plodding turtle of a running game coupled with a passing game that is five yards forward of a rugby team's? The only way they could move the ball on us is if we were to continue our own belligerent stupidity in playing KBD over KNM.
well, it's the aggies...
It's really, really hard to root for aTm...
They're insufferable when they win, annoying when they lose, and delusional in both instances. Their only real long-term success resulted from massive cheating and corruption, and they celebrate that with a fervor reserved only for true-believer dog-worshipers, all the while insistently denying it (typical aggie argument: "We didn't do it!!! And so does everybody else!!!).
Plus, they're just flat-out dirty. They revel in bayonetting the wounded, and then celebrate their great bayonet skills, and then laugh at their victims for being weak and full of bayonet holes, and then sanctimoniously recite their honor code with no hint (or understanding) of irony.
In spite of that, I have twice in my life rooted for the aggies. Once was back in 1977, when they played Michigan. I was basically rooting for a SWC vs Big10 result. Outcome: Michigan stomped them 41-3, and I don't recall it being even that close... The other time was against OU, back in 2003...
Hmmmmm, maybe I should make myself root for them more often...

Tough call
I hate mark mangioni. That fat fuck with his stupid shades looks like a complete clown. He is a joke and just makes me mad. I still can't get over his bitching after 4th and 14. We need A&M to win this game.
I hate A&M but we need to win this game b/c if they lose they will abandon ship on Fran and go in the tank and thus let OU run away with the South.
Let's face it guys we are not getting an at large bid for the BCS. We need to win the Big 12. The only way is if OU loses twice. That means A&M and OSU or Tech have to beat them. Realistically only A&M and OSU can beat them. Tech can't score on OU.
It really doesn't matter to me who wins but it would be for the best interest of UT football if A&M wins.

We need A&M to win this game.
