Horns Pre-Season Ranking: #16
A surprisingly high position in the polls for the Horns in the post-Durant era, but the Coaches Poll has them just behind Texas A&M. Conference favorites Kansas come in at #4.
I guess the voters are noticing how many pre-season watch lists Augustin is on, and thinking perhaps he will be the spark in taking Texas deep into the post-season. A lot will depend on whether Barnes can get some solid post play, as we're pretty deep at the guard position.

What's the old axiom about College Basketball?
you go as far as your point guard will take you?
I can't believe A&M is ranked behind us - I anticipate a precipitous dive for the Aggies post-Gillespie.

so
assuming everything goes to plan and we meet #7 Tennessee in the final of the Legends Classic, we'll be seeing two top 10 teams, one on a neutral court and one in their gym (#2 UCLA), over the course of 8 days very early in the season. could be HUGE for our tournament resume. we'll need to come together quick.
@Michigan State (#8) and vs. Kansas (#4) give us at least two more chances at a marquee victory, assuming they both stay highly ranked.
man i can't wait for college hoops to come back.

get a taste tonight
the Roundball RoundUp is tonight at 7(?) at Gregory. It'll be a water down midnight madness type deal, but both the men's and women's teams will be there for us to get a glimpse.

As if you didn't know football is king at UT, here's the attendance info: here are currently 400 confirmed guests, 651 might show up, and 1191 are missing out. It's the first time Texas is doing this, but when you compare that to 20,000+ for Kentucky's Midnight Madness, etc., you can see why Rick Barnes is sometimes frustrated about the support of Longhorn basketball.

Didn't we have a big
midnight madness during the Penders years? I think Dicky V came to one.

Yes, they had these during the Tom Penders days
Not that BB attendance was better then, it was worse, and there were no student tickets in a good location.
But perhaps the Midnight Madness attendance was better when people new it was happening.

Plus it was free.
The football team was not as good then and Basketball Penders style was more entertaining (not better).

Seriously though
I go to UT, I'm a huge basketball fan, and I knew NOTHING about this until 38 minutes after it began. It's not just the fans that are lackluster.

Roundup
What a joke. I got there late but there weren't many people there at all. My friend played drum-set for the band, and he was telling me how stupid it was. Didn't help that they decided to do this on a Friday, where everyone's out partying.
The show itself was kinda corny too. There was one game where Gail and Barnes had to look at baby pictures of players and guess who they were. And I swear to God, if I hear that "Crank That Soulja Boy" song one more time, I'm going to kill a kitten.
This was just the first one though. Hopefully it'll get better and better each year.
It was worth it though. They were handing out some big posters and the mens' poster was nice. Included the schedule too.
At the end, we could meet the players and get their autographs. On my poster, I got autographs from Barnes, Augustin, Abrams, James, Johnson, Pittman, Mason, Atchley, Chapman, Hill, Wangmene, Mooney, and Smith. I could not find Dogus Balbay anywhere at the end!
I'd show y'all if I had a scanner, but I don't.
Interesting that we're going with the international flavor a little bit. Dogus is from Turkey and Alexis Wangmene from Cameroon. The ladies have one from Puerto Rico.
It seemed Augustin and James were limping a bit. Either that or it was some gangsta walk or something. I'm not sure. Pittman and Balbay looked fine as far as walking abilities. No limping.

A joke, I agree
Barnes, Coach G, and the teams must have been pretty discouraged at the attendance. The whole thing dragged incredibly. I had to leave early (at 8), and am pretty sure I didn't miss a damn thing. But it was cool to see the athletes up close, and to see how they were hangin out.
I'm already a Coach G fan for life. She's full of energy and the girls love her. You can tell its the start of something special. Before the event began, the DJ was playing some remixed swing music, and she grabbed Barnes and made him dance with her. Pretty entertaining.
