John Chiles - Player of the Game

I know its a bit early to rave about our kids, but I just have to say that Chiles was the reason the 'horns won (besides Finley, Cosby, Colt, the o-line, Segio Kindle, and Ryan Bailey).

You might be asking yourself "wtf has gotten into BMG?!"

Well if you recall, Chiles came in the game for one snap and handed the ball off to Jamaal for a nice game.  Big deal, right?  Not exactly, the threat of a running QB altered the Nebraska defense -- they had to stay home on the weakside.  This gave the 'horns the ability to put a hat on the defenders at the line instead of continuing to be overwhelmed.  So Chiles comes out, and what do we do?  McCoy establishes himself as a running threat running the zone read to perfection for a nice gain.  And then it was like a light went off in GD's head -- "Oh yeah, the QB has to be able to run effectively for a zone read to actually work!  Wow - I never thought of that!"

Unfortunately, Colt is not that kind of QB and we can't expect him to win games with his feet.  That light hasn't gone off in GD's head yet.  However, for one week it worked all thanks to the unselfishness of John Chiles.

And to think...

This only occurred because McCoy got hurt. In fact I'm shocked that Colt didn't get injured severely. There were at least 5 incidents where he could've been knocked out for good.

Chiles should've started this game, period. He's the best fit for this scheme, and he was definitely the better QB to use against this Nebraska team that can't defend the run at all.

UT football coaches = cavemen

Look at the AP recap of the game. They basically said that we're a bunch of clueless idiots.

Once Texas figured out it should be running against one of the nation's worst run defenses, things turned out all right for the Longhorns.

The Longhorns spent three quarters trying to pass against one of the worst rush defenses in the country and Nebraska (4-5, 1-4) led 17-9 to start the fourth behind two touchdown passes from Sam Keller to Nate Swift.

Texas turned exclusively to its running game almost by chance and only after a hard hit on quarterback Colt McCoy.

McCoy was shaken up when he scrambled outside the pocket and the Longhorns were forced to use freshman John Chiles. His one play, a zone-read handoff to Charles, produced 24 yards and suddenly Texas had figured out how to beat a Cornhuskers' team that had been steamrolled on the ground in recent weeks. Texas only threw three passes in the fourth quarter.

Texas has moved away from that offense with McCoy who's not the same running threat Young was. Yet the Longhorns seemed to have paid little attention to how teams have battered the Nebraska defense on the ground this season. The Longhorns had more pass attempts (18) than rushes (17) in the first half and managed only one field goal.
McCoy, who was 12-of-28 for 181 yards, didn't throw a touchdown pass for the first time this season.
"It took a whole half to figure out what was going to work," McCoy said. "I've never been in a game where they blitzed every play."

We won the game, yet I'm still embarrassed and pissed off that our coaches could be this ridiculously incompetent.

yeah...

when the AP writer is calling you out, you know something's wrong.

Good point

an AP writer is like a computer, anonymously reporting facts with very little slant or tone. Having the AP writer call you out is like having an inanimate machine say you're a dumbass.

by BrooklynHorn on Oct 27, 2007 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

no sarcasm

AP writers really are very non-editorial in tone, which is their purpose: to just report what happened - the story of the game.  So for an AP writer to call out the coaching like that is essentially to say that the "story of the game" was how terribly coached the team was through 3 quarters.  Remarkable.  You almost never see that.

Oklahoma State

Now this is a team that is weak against the pass. Now McCoy would be the better fit against this team, not Chiles. The terrible game plan we used today against NU should work well against OSU.

I would not

go far enough to say John Chiles is the player of the game BUT he did helped to open up a can of worms for our offense today. Just by his appeareance on the field, it's enough to cause NEB defense's scheme got shaky. When you able to cause your opponent defense keep guessing, your offense is already (at least) on the 50 % chance of winning.

Just like Ohio State tonite, they have caused Penn State's D kept guessing for most of the game. And, Penn State is the #1 (sack on QB) team in the nation and they can't get any pressure on OSU's qb tonite.

When we played OU, GD did used John Chiles and mixed some plays with Colt but he abandoned John Chiles too soon & at the end we lost to OU at close margin.

There's no question that if you have a qb who equipped with running threat on the field, it will cause your opponent defense keep guessing how to defend the play.

Coaching mistakes against Nebraska

I was screaming at the coaches all during the first 3 quarters. You would have thought the Longhorns had never seen 8 guys in the box before. There are ways to beat that pressure but we weren't even trying them. They had 8 guys pressuring McCoy and we kept trying to drop back and throw as if they were sending four. What happened to quick slants and the quick hitter to the tight end?  Finley had something like one completion the whole game. What about some screens? Geez. It is a good thing we finally wore them down and the run started working because we sure weren't making any stellar calls. On that pop-up interception they sent the kitchen sink at McCoy (again) and that hit looked like it surprised him. You might think after he got pounded for 3 quarters that they'd start calling some quicker routes. Do we even have any quicker plays?

I disagree

I think that Chiles' affect on the Nebraska team is so thoroughly over emphasized it's not funny. Teams do not adjust that much in one play. They probably scooted over to cover him because they new he was not going to pass and Jamaal ripped a big gain on them. From then on out I am pretty sure that they just couldn't catch their breath, not that their minds were fried by the one play Chiles ran.

We're overemphasizing Chiles

to prove a point.  Chiles' effect on the game was minimal, but the adjustment that the coaches finally made was pivotal.  Like the AP writer said, we failed to take advantage of what teams had been able to do relentlessy against Nebraska -- run the football.  Instead we leveled the playing field by making NU's weakness a non-factor for 3 quarters.

I agree

I don't think it was just running the football

it was running it in a way that was effective.  They ran the ball a good bit through the first three quarters with little effect.  In fact a lot of the booing of GD came after the I formation 1st and 2nd down no gain running plays.  It was only when they adjusted to running the zone read that the offense got into gear.

If you listen to GD after the game, he was surprised by how much Nebraska blitzed.  But it seemed like instead of adjusting to it, he just kept waiting for them to stop blitzing.

Bad thing about his game is

now the teams we have left to play know how to dismantle our offense. I'm a little scared for what the next few weeks have in store for the horns.

My adopted son Brandon Foster is coming along quite nicely.

Chiles

His Freshman year at Texas = Tim Tebow's Freshman season, without the jump passes and other weirdness.

Great to see him in there, maybe in the next few games the coaches can show us all why, aside from being a solid 2nd stringer "in case of injury," they decided to burn his redshirt.  The man has talent, and I wish Mack would let him have one, PLEASE JUST ONE drive all for himself, even if its in the 4th quarter of a blowout.

I didnt realize your adopted child could jump as high as mine... Oh wait, he can't.

Does not count, or did you mean one more?
