AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas freshman guard Dogus Balbay will undergo knee surgery on Tuesday, Oct. 30, UT athletic trainer for men's basketball Fred Burnett confirmed on Monday. Balbay, who suffered the injury to his right knee during a pick-up game on Oct. 4, will be out indefinitely.
As a senior at Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.), he averaged 13.5 points and a team-best 7.5 assists per game while leading Brewster to a 29-6 record and a runner-up finish at the NEPSAC Class A Championship. Balbay paced the Under-19 Turkish National Team to a seventh-place finish at the 16-team Under-19 World Championships this summer in Novi Sad, Serbia (July 12-22), leading his team in scoring (12.4 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg), assists (3.3 apg), steals (1.9 spg) and minutes played (26.7 mpg).

Doesn't make sense
After TJ's scary injury in a pick-up game, why do we still allow our athletes to participate in them?

Terrible news
Probably our second question mark next to the front court is do we have anyone that can competently play backup PG? We didn't have it last year, and now it looks like we won't have it this year.
This team will live and die with Augustin. He can't afford to have off-nights (see the USC game that eliminated us). He'll have to play a lot now also. Hopefully he's not exhausted by the time the Big Dance comes around.
Harrison Smith has to step up and take that backup PG role.
DAMN IT! I was really looking forward to seeing what Dogus could bring to the table for us.

He's in much better shape
Barnes noted in one of the early pre-season press talks that DJ had tired out toward the end of last season.
This pre-basketball season DJ concentrated on getting his overall body conditioning and strength to a higher level and worked on his long-term seasonal conditioning. Barnes thought he was in great shape for the coming season.
So, while it would be great to have a back-up, at least DJ has the wheels now.
