It's just an exhibition game, but who honestly thought he would be allowed to get even this far?
Longhorn freshman forward Gary Johnson, Texas’ top recruit, has been cleared to play in the team’s exhibition game Friday night, coach Rick Barnes said Tuesday.
Johnson’s status has been up in the air because of an unspecified heart condition. Officials initially feared that Johnson’s career could be threatened, but then this fall he was cleared to practice with the team.
Barnes said that Johnson has not yet been cleared to play in the regular season. His status will be evaluated after Friday’s exhibition game against Xavier of Louisiana.
"This will help the evaluation process," Barnes said of Friday’s exhibition. "They want to see if game conditions change anything."
