I know this goes against the grain of most who post on this site, but, here goes...
Mack Brown is the classiest head football coach at a major college today. Bar none. Part of his class is his loyalty - loyalty to his players and loyalty to his coaches. When Mack Brown is your coach, that is what you are going to get. He's not Bob Stoops, or Nick Saban - he is old school and class all the way. He's not Mangino - there will never be a YouTube clip of Mack screaming obscenities at a player on the sidelines. He's not going to sell e-mail newsletters to insiders with injury information. He doesn't have running backs who have agents paying their parents. Mack Brown is pure class and he is our coach until he decides he wants to retire.
Mack Brown brought Greg Davis with him and Greg Davis has stayed with him the past ten years. Mack and Greg won a national championship together. Mack and Greg have brought a consistency to Texas football that was sorely lacking since Royal retired. Greg implemented an offense that allowed us to exploit the talents of one of the best college football players of all time. Most of you guys don't remember the losing seasons - yes, Texas had losing seasons - meaning, they lost more games than they won. You don't remember the days when the forward pass in the Texas offense was non-existent. You don't remember Johnny Mac claiming that he was suffering from post-concussion syndrome when he made bad decisions. Mack's class is such that in his mind and in his heart, he would not be where he is today without Greg Davis at his side.
Greg Davis is class as well - when the offense doesn't perform, he doesn't blame his young offensive line or blame his butter fingers running back. He takes the blame.
Having said all of this, as a 1983 grad, who lived through the highs and many lows of Akers, McWilliams, and Mackovic, I am forever indebted to Mack Brown and Greg Davis for restoring Texas football and for bringing consistency to our program but mostly for doing it in the most classy way possible.
Do I get frustrated? Sure. Do I question playcalling? Of course, who doesn't. Mack and Greg are not football geniuses. But, I'll take a Mack and Greg over Stoops, Saban, Fran, Carroll, or anyone else. These guys will be forever enshrined in Texas Longhorn football folklore. Boo Mack and Greg? Never.
