Limas Sweed Done for the Year
Undergoing surgery on his wrist. That hurts being that he's an All-American but we all know it's a deep position for the Longhorns. Really disappointing to end like this for him though.
I think we'll always remember him for his huge catch against Ohio State. That touchdown was the highlight of the 2005 season... if you forget that whole Rose Bowl thing. He's supposedly a heck of a blocker out at the wide receiver position and I kind of hope he ends up with the Titans, giving Tennessee a big pass catcher and blocker on the outside for Vince.

Austin American-Statesman also reports, "...defensive end Aaron Lewis fractured his elbow against the Sooners and is out indefinitely. Fullback Luke Tiemann also will undergo wrist surgery, but is expected to miss only two games."

That explains everything
So then the question is, who's fault is it that he was playing in the first place? Bottom line is he was hurting the team by existing. All the dropped passes and weak blocking. Take away those passes to him and they could've been to Finley, Cosby, and Jones.
Should Sweed have shut himself down? He says he was trying to help the team, even though he was doing the complete opposite. That's pretty stupid if you ask me. This is almost as bad as a pitcher pitching despite elbow problems and risking Tommy John surgery.
Should Mack and the trainers have shut him down also? They should've recognized that he was hurting the team, so he shouldn't have been allowed to play.
The fault goes on both sides.
Sweed was already one of the more disappointing players this year. It all makes sense now. The fact that he tried to play hurt makes me even more disappointed at him.

Disagree
You can't tell me that as a college athlete you would voluntarily shut yourself down. You don't work that hard just to give up over a little adversity. If that was the attitude then nobody would play football.
These guys get to D1 football by making sacrifices so I don't know how you could expect anything else from a competitor like Sweed.

Sweed
All I'm saying is that if he REALLY cared about the team, he'd do the right thing. Playing hurt is selfish. He's a competitor alright. Probably trying to increase his draft stock.

this is on the coaches
they really need to do a better job of recognizing when an a player's injury is limiting their effectiveness. an injured colt against a&m last year and kansas state this year come to mind.

GoingForTheCorner
GFTC, you really need to step back and learn something about college football. Do you think players sit in a bathub of ice water because it feels good?
These guys play with pain all the time. They don't tape up their body for the hell of it. How many running backs do you know that have ankle injuries and play the next week? How do you think it feels running on a sore ankle?
Like someone else said, if these guys didn't play hurt there would be no one on the field. They aren't going to run on a broken leg, but just because they have soreness and pain doesn't mean they are going to run to the bench. They block it out and get the injury looked at on Sundays.
That video of the fade route at Ohio Stadium just gave me a seizure again. I was sitting in that corner of the stadium.

One more point
And to say "if he REALLY cared about the team" is just plain silly talk.
by TXBuckeye on Oct 8, 2007 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Injuries
There's a difference between playing with pain and playing hurt. Sweed was doing the latter, and that shouldn't happen. Should players play hurt or with pain if it means they can't do their job (which Sweed was CLEARLY not doing)?
Stop comparing Sweed to running backs with sore ankles. If they couldn't do their jobs, they wouldn't be playing either. Sweed was a little more than sore know what I mean? If you didn't hear, he's OUT FOR THE SEASON WITH AN INJURY. The guy should not have been playing at all. Once again, he was doing this for himself, and our coaches didn't stop him either.

No
Any player that doesn't want to play no matter what should NEVER be on the field. The coaches have to make these decisions for them. You are seriously wronging Sweed to say that he was being SELFISH by playing hurt. All the talk on these posts and diaries would be enough to convince anyone that Sweed was the deep threat for this offense. Everyone looks to him and there was the idea of "no one but Sweed can do this" early on. If I were in his shoes, I'd have done the same thing, believing that I had to do something for my team. The last thing I would want is for some guy to take himself out of the game. This should be a wake-up call to the coaches that THEY and THEY ALONE are responsible for these kids' health as long as they tell them that they are playing for a team. You tell them all year long that you should think about the team first, then you expect a kid to step up and say "Hey, I can't cut it, coach." That's ludicrous. You can not blame Sweed for anything but phenomenal catches, and a ton of effort. It's embarrassing that someone would say things like that about a kid that's playing for his favorite team. Sweed's a god after Ohio State and after last year, but now he's a selfish ball-hog that is stealing minutes? Disgusting.

Sweed = God?
Never has been. He made one great play. I've never been too fond of him. Superb natural talent but dropped passes galore. Roy Williams wannabe but never came close.
He's absolutely stealing minutes whether you like it or not. Maybe if Sweed wasn't there, Finley and other COMPETENT WRs could get some more opportunities.
You play to win the game. This year's Sweed is not even half the real Sweed. I'd take Cosby, Jones, and Finley over this version of Sweed. I agree that the coaches should take more of the blame. Sweed is a kid, but it's not like he's some moron. He knows very well that he was hurting the team by playing hurt.
Disgusting is having to listen to your sensitive bullshit. He was being selfish. Get over it. I'm gladly moving on because this means more Finley receptions.

Until Finley...
...tweaks an ankle and plays through it, causing him to drop a few balls. Then we can call him an incompetent, selfish waste of field space. Or, better yet, he can tell Mack that he can't play, then everyone sees their teammate (someone that they count on) not even trying to play through the pain for them. That sends a great message. There are some things like leadership and motivation that can be just as useful as a TD catch. Coaches should evaluate players better in practice to determine if they are 100%. Players should give 100%. Are you calling Lokey a selfish PT thief for asking Mack to let him practice with the team and play in the Alamo Bowl after breaking his leg? He probably knew he had little chance to make an impact, but he was saying to Mack and the team that he was there for them if they needed him. That's what you expect from your leaders, and supporting that kind of effort is not "sensitive bullshit" - It's respect. Calling a player incompetent and selfish without knowing what they were thinking is disrespect. That's all.

Another way to look at it
What if this surgery could wait til the end of the season, but Sweed wants to have it done now so he'll be ready by combine?
My point is we don't know what's going on in Sweed's head. For some to say he's captain courageous is just as silly as someone saying he's bringing the team down.
We should all stop thinking we know what's going on in players and coaches heads.
This isn't necessarily a reply to Horn Brain. Just couldnt find a better place to put it.

Wow
Just saw this on the Mack Brown wesite. No wonder Limas couldn't hang on to the ball. I wish him all the best and apologize for my criticism of his play. This "explains" it for me... in spades.
I am sorry about Lewis too, but hopefully next year will be a great one for him.

agh
damnit. this is rough news for the horns, and for limas especially. it certainly explains a lot about his season to date, particularly his disappearance late in the game on saturday. best of luck to him, and here's to a speedy recovery and good draft selection.

I'm sorry to Limas
For someone who came in as a former tight end on a running team in high school, he made tremendous strides during his career at UT. I'll miss beating my chest and yelling "ghost of the playmaker" after a big play. I think I will always remember him for the catch against Ohio State, really a bigger play than the fourth-and-four because it wouldn't have happened if Limas had dropped that ball. The big play in the OU game was huge last year, too. I wish him the best in the NFL and commend him for trying to help the team even though he was so clearly hurt.
-I also feel bad for Aaron Lewis, he has really come on during the last year, starting with a monster performance running down Adrian Peterson several times in last year's Cotton Bowl victory. I wish him the best as well.

Question: Should I still sport my jersey, or retire it?

Do you still wear a VY jersey?
The answer is the same to both questions.

He's a senior.
If he has surgery now, he can be back in time for the NFL Combine. I don't begrudge him at all if his motivation is looking out for his draft status.
by Longhorn13 on Oct 8, 2007 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully Pittman can step up and fill the void.
Pittman has been a non factor all season, as he has borrowed more cars than passes he has caught all season. Hopefully, he can salvage his senior season and step up and help this team now.
As for Limas, it's a shame. Hopefully this won't effect his draft stock too much.

Unfortunately
Pittman IS the WR void. Now Sweed joins him.

Young WRs
If I remember correctly, we have about 3-4 highly recruited young wrs on the team. Maybe one or two of them will get a chance to shine now and gain experience.

Thanks...
Sweed for some damn fun years of football.
I think Limas has been second only to a certain quarterback in terms of making unforgettable plays over the last few years. I know we have tons of talent to step in at receiver, but I'll always miss the immediate Sweed deep ball immediately following any turnover.
I hope he's fully recovered by the combine and ends up on a NFL team that plans to use him immediately. He deserves all the success in the world for everything he's done for this team over the past few years.
PB, what's the possibility of getting some "best of Sweed" clips up this week to celebrate the end of an era?

Wow...
very surprised when I saw this diary. Not once on the field did it look like he had a wrist injury, so kudos to him for gutting it out.
However, had he been taken out sooner, couldn't he have applied for a medical redshirt? Obviously, I know nothing about his academic status, and whether he would be willing to play and go to school another year, but it would seem to me that this would hurt his draft stock tremendously.
by jc25 on Oct 8, 2007 7:47 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
By the by...
Rod Wright, he of the "come back for my senior year and give up potential first round money, only to injure my shoulder, slip to the 7th round, and miss a year in the NFL" had a great game in his first start against the Texans yesterday. From what I remember, he was great at loading up the line and stopping the run, had a couple of QB pressures, deflected a pass and recovered a fumble.
So Limas, even though you didn't win the National Championship this year, and you didn't really contribute much, you'll still have your shot in the NFL and hopefully won't slip nearly as far as Wright did in the draft. Which is nice.
by jc25 on Oct 8, 2007 8:02 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I feel so bad for him.
Such a good guy and that explains everything. It was his senior season how could he give that up guys. He had to play. Don't be so hard on him. It really didn't hurt the team guys. Was it his fault we can't cover kicks or that JC can't hold on to the ball.
I am going to miss him but the team has already adapted without him. Could have had a better career as a longhorn but the offense the first two years really shackled him and last year he really came out. They would have shut him down earlier but since it happened proably against TCU or UCF it was too late to get a medical redshirt.

I feel bad for...
Limas as well, this being his last year and all. He is a great kid, and he's a clean kid. Man that catch against Ohio State. I'll never forget that. Bless his heart, I hope the surgery goes well and he gets a great position in the draft. We'll miss you Limas.

Thank You Limas...
... for 4 and a half years of your life that we all could enjoy. You were (and still are) everything that anyone could ask for in a person and a wide receiver. You will always be remembered as the quintessential big play threat; from your ridiculous catch against OU in '04, to your entire, unforgettable 2006 season, to the catch that none of us will ever forget in Columbus 2 years ago, you will live in Longhorn lore forever. Thank you once again, and I wish you nothing but the best in what promises to be a very successful future.
