aggies want Applewhite?

I thought this was pretty funny. It seems that quite a few aggies on their message boards are hoping to hire Applewhite after they can Fran.  Hiring Major wouldn’t be the dumbest thing that they ever did.

I can't see him leaving Alabama for an OC position at aggieland, but what about an HC?  That seems too fast anyhow, even for Major, and I don’t think that it will happen.  If I were him, I would stick around at Alabama for a while.  Getting a couple more years under Saban has got to look good on the ole résumé.

Aggie Fans
Hate to generalize, but Aggie fans are pretty delusional. This is the same fan base that tried to convince me that Billy Gillespie would stay at A&M rather than go to Kentucky. I'd hear, 'why would he leave A&M? He's a Texan and has got great resources there.'

Please. No collegiate coach, from the state of Texas or not, sets his sights on College Station as the ultimate prize. As for Major? He's going to be a hot commodity in a few years time, why rush off to a dumpy place like A&M where you're stuck in between a rock and a hard place...i.e. A&M is just barely good enough where there are high (read: unrealistic) expectations, but not truly good enough to compete with Texas and OU for conference and national championships.

It'd be a major mistake for Major to go there, and I don't see him being in that much of a hurry to taint his seemingly rising stock.

major will NEVER coach at A&M...

...because it fails to meet his own standards:

The logical question that presents itself to a 28-year-old offensive coordinator is how long before he becomes a head coach. For all his moving, Applewhite said he hasn't had a career plan. He has reacted to opportunities as they have presented themselves.

"Goals and all that kind of stuff, that's something I don't give much credence to," Applewhite said. "I want to be somewhere where I can win. I want to be at a school that has a tradition of winning and a chance to win. I want to be around good people, interesting people that I enjoy being around every day. And I want to be around people I can learn from."

Re:

Uhh, I hate A&M as much as the next guy here, but what exactly is wrong with the Aggie job?

According to nationally acclaimed writers (and not just Maroon wearing Texans), A&M has some of the great traditions in the country and one of the best gameday atmospheres to visit. I've gotta think these traditions also resonate with players, who were (albeit very young) kids during the late Wrecking Crew days. A&M also has a passionate, if delusional, fanbase, that would go so far as to support a Longhorn if he decided to become HC. Is it really that far fetched, though, seeing as how we embraced DKR?

More importantly, A&M is a winnable job in a major conference, with an amazing recruiting ground in Texas. Even as the team scrounging for third-tier talent below Texas and OU, it's a hell of a lot better than trying to recruit as the HC for Idaho or Kent State.

As good as his job is now learning under Saban, I find it hard to believe Major would turn down a chance to coach and a mid-tier BCS school, if given the opportunity.

Not that A&M will be smart enough to offer it to him, anyway.

What's wrong with A&M?
  • College Station/Bryan
  • Dog idolizing
  • Inferiority complex
  • Homo-phobes
  • Cultish (in a "drink my Kool-Aid" kind of way)

...off the top of my head.

re: what's wrong with the Aggie job?

I've gotta think these traditions also resonate with players...

I'm not at all sure this is correct.  If you haven't grown up in some little hick East Texas town stuck in some time warp where there's still a lot of, um,  ambivalence about hot topics like, say, integration, or if you've not drunk deeply of the cultic Kool-Aid in your misbegotten youth, I've got to think that you find many, if not most of the traditions disturbing, sometimes on a deep, visceral level...

Some people might be way into the whole sack-squeezin', jizz-jar fillin', bonfire-burnin',  gee, ain't we funny when we allus say "tu" 'stead of THE UNIVERSITY OF FREAKIN' TEXAS" thing, but I'm just guessing if you're an urban/suburban African-American youth (which demographic, coincidentally,  seems highly represented in most top recruiting lists...), the whole milkmen cheerleaders and militaristic band and scoreboards for dead dogs and serious little white boys playing army real hard just might not resonate as much as you seem to think.

I disagree

I could see him taking a HC position at a smaller school than one that's just kind of on the fringe of being a major player on the national scence. I don't really have any evidence for that other than this rationale: would you be more intrigued in a young coach who had won 9 or 10 games at a school in the WAC or Conference USA or would you rather have a coach who won 6-8 games a year at a BCS school like A&M.

Major is in the business of picking winning plays

Becoming HC at A&M is not one of those.

It would be stupid for A&M to select a coach with no prior experience. They once made a shot at getting Gary Kubiak, but he didn't want to leave Denver and has his sights set on an NFL job [Houston]. The HC is a political position as much as a coaching one.

When the Wrecking Crew was at it's height, Jackie S. stayed in trouble for recruiting 'problems' and set new records for tossing assistant coaches. When he finally left, they kept the guy who was his recruiting coordinator and knew all the tricks. I wonder if Applewhite is even appropriate to their program, a little too fresh and clean. If it were only about football, perhaps, but it is not.

Perhaps they need an wizened and tough mature coach and the only one I see in the state is Mike Price at UTEP. Even with the 'Bama dance on his resume and to keep some continuity of the story line on the Brazos. BTW Price sued SI over the story which cost him the Bama job and they settled out of court. He had been hired in principle by Bama but had not actually signed a contract when the Florida incident occurred. Some incident did occur but the reporter kept no notes and paid an anonymous informant, so the hubba was greater than the facts, but that didn't save Price's job or reputation. (See wiki for details.) UTEP has done well under him and Texas Tech's four-quarter comeback over the Miners is one of the powerful but little noticed stories this year because of the giant upsets that did occur.

What I'm saying here is that the aggies should be hunting for someone really appropriate to their situation (if Fran should exit), not the most popular or new-hot-commodity coach out there. Of course, it could be worse, like Baylor where there is no one appropriate to the situation in the short term.

We have some idiot fans, just like y'all do

Why the hell anyone would want Major Applewhite as a head coach at A&M is beyond me.

  • No HC experience
  • 2 years of coordinator experience, at two different schools
  • 3 years TOTAL working as an assistant coach at D-IA schools

There simply isn't enough of a resume or history on this kid to justify giving him a head coaching job at a university, much less one at a BCS school.

I'd give him two more years at 'Bama, MINIMUM, before I'd even look at him for a mid-tier head coaching position, like a MAC school.

Ignoring the lack of experience angle, Applewhite did a radio gig while fulfilling his internship requirement for his sports management degree at texas; he made derogatory comments about A&M and the football program in that capacity. So he doesn't care for A&M, so I see no reason to care about him.

I've never understood the hype about Applewhite, anyways. A lot of excitement over a kid who spent the majority of his career at backup, and who's legend has outgrown his performance.

Major has done no wrong!  Ever!  If he said derogatory things about A&M, then A&M must be doing some pretty damned derogatory things (I save this blank for you to fill) to deserve it!  He has trampled out the vintage where the grapes of wrath (and Chris Simms' grapes) are stored, and he is marching onward towards immortal glory!

So you recant your vile mis-speakings, lest the righteous fury of a thousand forward passes (HB dives?) fall upon you in the name of The Major!

(It's a cult, man, you would know, right?)

"So, the A and the M are just there so you aren't TU?"
