Update: J'Covan Brown Commits to Longhorns
Rick Barnes has landed another top notch talent. Rivals.com$ is reporting that J'Covan Brown, the 6-2 175-pound combo guard from Port Arthur Memorial, has committed to the Texas Longhorns. Brown is rated as a 4-star recruit by Rivals.com and is currently ranked as the 42nd best high school senior in the country and the sixth best shooting guard in the country.
The Horns beat out Oklahoma State and Baylor and apparently overcame the influences of a few people close to Brown who were pushing the guard to sign anywhere but with the Longhorns.
With the potential of DJ Augustin leaving school early, landing Brown was crucial. Congrats Coach Barnes and welcome J'Covan!
[Update] Rivals is reporting that that while J'Covan did verbally commit, he did not sign his letter of intent. The declaration is obviously good news, but the lack of signatures indicates the door is still open.

J'Covan
Wasn't his official visit during the A&M home game last year? How could he not come after THAT.

Q for Wiggo
What did you think of UNT beating Okie State last night? Was that unexpected?

A bit unexpected
I've been meaning to write an Around the Big 12 basketball piece but haven't yet.
The pundits don't like OSU. They are picked in that unimpressive middle of the pack range by most publications. I expect a little more out of them. They have a few off-season problems with the law and not unexectedly with a Sutton team, some involved alcohol.
They did sign a McDonald's All American last year and brought in about five or six other freshmen. Once they get acclimated to college ball, the Cowboys will be fine, not great but not horrible either. They will likely be in a battle for one of the last NCAA bids out of the Big 12.

Thanks
When I first read that, it seemed like a major upset, but I didn't know who OSU had back this year.
At the buzzer, UNT students stormed the court...I guess I don't blame them after the football season they've had, but Kentucy/Gardner-Webb this was not.

The lack..
....of a signature took the air out of my celebration.
He has to be looking for some love or attention from another program by taking this path. Hopefully, he sticks to his commitment.

Maybe, but hopefully not
I don't follow basketball recruiting too closey, but have been watching Brown's recruitment for at least a year. According to the sites and people who cover these things, Brown really wants to come to Texas. He is a longtime Longhorn fan and has never wavered from his desire to play in Austin.
Sounds like a done deal, right? Well, his coach and his dad are apparently not in agreement with J'Covan's thinking. It looks like he stood up for himself today and said I'm going where I want to go.
I truly hope he is a Longhorn next fall and that his family and coach can somehow learn to support the kid.
We'll see...
