Big 12 Bball Tonight
The Big 12 will get a big chance to redeem itself tonight at OU faces #3 Memphis in New York 8 PM ESPN2. This will be my first chance to see freshman phenom Derrick Rose and the Memphis Tigers. I've seen Memphis play in the NCAA tournament in each of the last two years: in Dallas in 2006 and in San Antonio in 2007. And for the record, the Tigers are my pick to cut down the nets in San Antonio in 2008.
Also, this was discussed briefly in the J'Covan Brown thread, but the Big 12 has started really flat. On Wednesday night, Sam Houston State beat Texas Tech, North Texas upset Oklahoma State, and Iowa State lost at Bradley. OUCH! Only the Aggies survived last night by defeating UTEP by five points at home to advance in the pre-season NIT.
Even with freshman Blake Griffin, the Sooners are probably outmanned tonight. But a win would really help the Big 12 in the vital RPI ratings that are already suffering. I'm intersted to see how much Jeff Capel's team has improved since last year. The Sooners were simply hard to watch on offense last season.

In other B12 Bball news...
... the womens' team demolished their second over-matched opponent in a row to start the Coach G Era 2-0. Next up: #1 Tennessee in Knoxville.
This team's style of play couldn't be more different from the Jody Conradt teams. They run run run, and have dominated the boards.
Texas shot a sizzling 64 percent in the first half, making 21 of 33 shots. The Longhorns had 11 blocks in the game. Texas scored 54 of its points in the paint, holding a 54-16 edge in scoring down low. UT also held a commanding 51-31 edge in rebounding and the edge in fast-break points (28-2). Texas finished the game shooting 12-for-15 from the free throw line, while Lamar did not make a trip to the foul line.
Ashley Lindsay has been a revelation this year. She had 6 blocks last night. She has the potential to be great, but was too often in Jody's doghouse the last two years, constantly getting yanked from the game at the first mental error. We also have seen solid play from our two freshmen, Rachel Rentschler and Kat Nash. The team is currently without two of its best players from last year, both of whom should be back by conference season. Although there is no chance for the upset this weekend, the Longhorns should definetly improve over the past two years and just might give aTm, OU and Baylor a run for the Big XII title. If not this year, then certainly next.

Will be happy if they keep it under 20
The Lady Vols have beaten the Longhorns by scores of 102-61 and 67-46 in the past two seasons.

OU lost to #1 Tennessee 70-67 last night
Although it was on a neutral court, it still give us a good measuring stick to compare us to the Sooners. OU is now 0-2 after falling to #4 Maryland. Pretty brutal starting schedule for the Sooners, but it will serve them in good stead in conference play.

Re:
Was looking at recruiting stuff in USA Today and noticed that Texas has signed none of the listed "All-Americans" while Duke had snagged a couple. Is this just a product of Coach G's late hire (and thus late start on recruiting this year)? Not really well versed in Women's CBB, so just wondering.

Late start
Everyone who was recruiting the 2008 class for Texas left when Jody left, so I'm sure we lost some momentum. In spite of that, Coach G has managed to land what hoopgurlz.com rates as the 13th best 2008 class in the early signing period. The top rated recruit I think was #42 on the list, so she wouldn't have shown up on that USA Today list. The three verbals (two have signed) provide Texas with depth at PG and the post, and they are fast, so they will fit in well with the young team back from this year.
Coach G is in on several of the top recruits for 2009, so Texas should be back in the Top 3 class rankings again, where they have been for most of this decade.
Small steps.

Nice article on Coach G on espn
Duke went from David to Goliath in Goestenkors' time there, even if the Blue Devils did not win a national title. And by the way, the spin out of certain "leaders" in Duke's athletic department trying to diminish Goestenkors' time there (while pretending that's not what they're doing) ... such nonsense doesn't fool anybody. It simply confirms she had reason to leave.
Obviously, she had other reasons to go. Texas offered a lot of money, dazzling facilities and a new challenge. And coming close but not winning an NCAA title had become a ghost on Goestenkors' shoulder, one I have compared in the past to what men's coach Roy Williams had at Kansas.
I'm going to really enjoy the Goestenkors era.

Hey AW...
I always enjoy PB's stab at the football BlogPoll, so I was just seeing if you'd be interested at adding BON to the basketball BlogPoll.

They're looking for more bloggers to help fill out those ballots! Just a thought.

Great Idea
We tried it for a little while last season but it never really got going. Hopefully this year will be different.
