Saturday TV Guide / Open Thread
Your Saturday TV lineup, with particular focus on Big 12 and games of national interest. For this week's full TV lineup, click here.
The lines and my own picks return this week after a good enough 9-7 showing against the spread last week, bringing me to 16-11 for my two weeks of picking. I'll take it. Also note: I pick the scores before looking at the lines - some games wind up out of play because my pick matches the spread. Happy footballing everyone.

Let's see now
Today we root for KSU, Tech, and (what-the-hell) Iowa State.
But do we want Michigan or Ohio State? The game's just started and I need to know.
Not much difference here
Winner of OSU-Michigan's going to the Rose Bowl as Big 10 champion unless Ohio State wins and somehow winds up in the national title game.
Otherwise, you got it right; the Big 12 is likely sending two to the BCS. If you want Texas to be one of the two, rooting for chaos among OU, Kansaas, and Missouri is the ticket.
OSU
I think we wanted OSU to win to ensure that the other Big 12 teams that don't win the CCG will not be in the top 4 of the BCS.
Two questions
It took Missouri 2 plays to intercept a Josh Freeman pass, and 2 plays to score.
Question 1: How the hell did Texas lose to this crappy K-State team by 20 points - AT HOME?
Question 2: How the hell did the mediocre-at-best Land Thieves beat the Tigers??

Well
- Inexplicable. We weren't prepared in the slightest. Awful, awful loss.
- OU is better than you're giving them credit. This is not a dominant team, but it's a strong one.
Soon as I say that
KSU marches up the field. Course they couldn't manage to get it across the line and settled for a FG.
I just don't know what to think about OU. They have had two very tepid performances the past two weekends, and could very well leave Lubbock with another loss. Bradford has cooled off after a hot start, and the rushing stats haven't been gaudy. I can't help but feel that OU would be a 3-loss team in the SEC, Pac10 or even Big10. If they win out and beat KU in the Big XII CG I will give them their due. Till then...

In addition, they had only three penalties for 23
KSU had come in as one of the most penalized teams in the nation but they didn't self destruct or make many crucial mistakes.
Texas did, with the TOs, and could only make 6 of 17 third-down conversions. KSU had 7 of 17 but only scored one TD and the set-up FGs.

Play well in the morning games and some don't. I guess it's like that for quite a few teams.
Ohio St-Michigan
This is what I like about this game.
Weather is cold. It's raining. Michigan's Big 3 have never beaten OSU. The Rose Bowl and Big Ten title are on the line.

Tebow
Has become 1st QB in college FB to ever throw for 20 TDs and rush for 20 TDs in the same season.
Will he snatch away the Heisman?
With no clear frontrunner and Tebow's fabulous season, I think he may win it. QBs with 3 losses generally wouldn't win it, but his three losses (Georgia, Auburn and LSU) were all very close. His defense allowed two of the teams to come from behind in the waning seconds.
Not so fast my friend
Tebow had average-to-poor games against most of the decent defenses he's faced this year - #1 LSU, #11 Auburn and #25 Georgia. And Florida lost. The other team rankings:
Western Kentucky: Reclassifying
Troy: #65
Ole Miss: #96
Kentucky: #63
Vandy: #23
South Carolina: #52
He's an impressive young man with awesome talents but I wouldn't annoint him just yet. My vote is going with Chase Daniel unless/until Missouri stumbles. Tebow will obviously be the front-runner going into next year though.
by patienthornsfan on Nov 17, 2007 1:09 PM CST up reply actions
Tebow-Daniel
I think both go to New York ... I think Tebow will keep adding up TDs and will eventually narrow out McFadden, Hart, Daniel
This may be the year that voters actually have to look at: Who is the best player in college football.
I'd vote for Tebow. And just by saying that I'm not taking anything against Daniel. I think he's a fabulous player
Next year's top candidates out of the gate:
Tim Tebow
Chase Daniel
Jamaal Charles
Juice Williams
Insert USCquarterback here
Matthew Stafford
Sam Bradford
Graham Harrell
Knowshon Moreno
Ryan Mallett will be in there soon
I'll agree with you on Juice Williams
I think Illinois wins the Big 10 next year.
Matthew Stafford will forever live in the shadow of Tebow. And as you note, he's probably not even the best player on his team right now.
Graham Harrell has character issues that the voters will notice, I doubt he even appears on their radar. Especially when Tech goes 8-4 or 7-5 again.
I'm shocked you left Ryan Peri-loser off your list! And where's Jimmy Clausen?
by patienthornsfan on Nov 17, 2007 1:26 PM CST up reply actions
I considered Perri-lous
But he's got no skins on the wall really. Plus I don't rally like him. Will he be a good QB? Sure. The media won't like him either
The others listed are what I consider the preseason faves on a nat'l level. For instance, you could add McCoy to the list. Or perhaps one of the WVA guys
And Jimmy Clausen is too closely related to Casey Clausen
If Tebow were to win...
... would that exclude him from the Heisman next year a la Matt Leinart? If so, That would help Jamaal out tremendously. If Tebow doesn't win, Jamaal will have to go ape along with three more Tebow losses to win it.
KSU Lateral for TD on Blocked Punt
Does anyone have the game on? What exactly happened there?
Missouri has come back for their 3rd TD to lead it 21-15 in Q2 but this is definetly a weird game when watched solely on the play-by-play updates.

3 yards and a cloud of flab...
The new coach at Michigan may want to look at a couple of things for the future....
-recruiting speed
-a spread offense
and maybe even a fast mobile QB ....

Not Defensive Struggle
This is not a defensive struggle. That would imply that the defenses are playing amazing. In reality, the offenses are both executing horrendously. Michigan cannot even complete a pass of greater than three yards.

Was this Lloyd Carr's last Michigan game?
And it looks like Georgia is going to hang on
Woodson made a mental error, took a huge sack that got Kentucky out of FG range, and now Georgia is essentially running out the clock. All they have to do is make this FG and the game's over.
Not too worried, though, given that Georgia still has to play LSU in the SEC CG, so another loss should drop them below Texas in the BCS.
UPDATE FG good, Georgia's gonna win this one 24-13.

If UT wins out, they go to SEC game. Vols struggling with Vandy right now and play at Kentucky next week

Not much good thus far
I always enjoy this Saturday because it's fun to have a chance to sit back and watch teams other than Texas sweat it out, but I'm thinking the only thing that's happened in our favor thus far is tOSU beating Michigan ensuring that only one Big 10 team gets a BCS bid.
Regardless, I agree that UT's BCS chances completely depend on the mini-playoff going on between Mizzou, KU and OU.
Hopefully Tech will step up tonight as it will be hard for Texas to make a case if the winner of the KU/Mizzou game faces an 11-1 OU team in the Big XII title game. I'm thinking no matter the outcome of that game, both of those teams will get BCS invites.
Then again, probably just need to worry about beating A&M. The rest will take care of itself. Still a lot of ball to be played.
I guess my bowl wish list is as follows:
BCS - Any of them, it's a BCS Bowl.
Holiday - Prospect of playing a #2 Pac 10 just seems more enticing than the winner of ACC in the Gator or #3 in the SEC.
Cotton - Prospect of playing #3 SEC team still better than ACC.
Gator - No real love for playing V-Tech, Clemson or BC even if they are ACC champ.
Thoughts?
Crabtree is so sick!!!
I'm speechless. To bad he didn't get the td
Crabtree is scary
Not the best at catching it yet...But after the catch, he cannot be stopped.
Crabtree, yea
Makes you wonder why UT never went after him right? Oh, I know. Gotta have an early commitment or else
also
if this really is a concussion to bradford, he might not be able to play next week, giving a slightly brighter glimmer of hope of texas going to the big 12 championship game.
Interesting first quarter
OU's gonna put up points at some point, so Tech's gotta avoid turnovers and keep scoring. If not, this game will go the way of the Tulsa-OU game from earlier this year, rather than the Texas-KSU game from last year.
with halzle at QB
i'm not convinced that OU is going to score that much. depends on whether Tech can stop the run or not.
with bradford in, I don't think Tech could just outscore OU. with halzle instead, i think they might be able to. they just have to avoid the turnovers.
I think he was a basketball recruit
I think Knight recruited him, but once he started tearing up football field he dropped bball.
Reason for Crabtree
At Dallas Carter, he was a predominantly running QB with a moderate arm and solid running once he got into the open. Their district was crappy and no one would recruit him as a QB.
He was also a great point guard and Tech offered him the package of football (non-QB) athlete who could also play hoops. He stuck with football
Likewise in Stillwater, Byron Eaton was one of the best free safeties I've ever seen and he was a good running quarterback. He signed early in basketball and could not technically play football until his second year at OSU. Some NCAA rule or something. He decided to just stick with basketball
Ryan Leaf's lil bro
didn't look too good for Oregon either.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 17, 2007 8:26 PM CST up reply actions
I think he is in shock.
Sudden entrance, probably few reps in practice with first team, the pressure of being behind - and now much farther behind. Perfect storm - and it is all on his shoulders.
question:
OU's true freshman QB (Keith Nichol?): have they burned his redshirt yet or not? If not, at what point in this game do you consider it? Obviously, give Halzle a chance to settle down and improve, but seriously. If OU wins out, they go to the national championship game. You wouldn't be burning it for no reason.
I guess it's a cost-benefit analysis. How much greater a chance does ou have to win this game with Nichol at QB rather than Halzle? And is that amount worth losing a year of his eligibility? something for OU to think about at halftime.
TD Tech!
27-7.
If UT was down 27-7 to Tech/OSU, I wouldn't be scared at all, but that's just us. OU's in a different situation with their QB out.

Texas vs Tech in '08
Harrell and Crabtree are both coming back. Game's in Lubbock.
Whover wins that game may have to score 75 points
The key is JC
Charles is coming back for his senior year. McGee should be better, and Chiles might be more involved in the offense.
You saw what we did this year. We MUST run the ball well so it keeps their offense off the field. Scoring 75 might happen, but won't be necessary if we run the ball well.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 17, 2007 8:44 PM CST up reply actions
Plus, the D might not play straight up;
that's what they did this year. With a more experienced and aggressive D, face up on receivers and pressure on the QB, Horns could attack the Tech offense. This year it really didn't.
But, as you say, the real insurance is running the ball well, controlling the time, and putting a lot of points on the board.
I'm just saying ...
QB and top receiver are coming back for a game in Lubbock
We saw how fast they could score when they were in Austin
Plus we have Kansas and Mizzou
So our D better be adaptable for such attacks, not just Tech.
After OU, it's Missouri, OSU, Tech, Baylor and Kansas. That's guaranteed to be a tough stretch. (Amen for Baylor.)
And with pre-OU games against Arkansas and at Colorado, we'll need a good running D.
It sure gives OU some Big MO
going into half time. Particularly if they score here.
Big third and goal.
Outsmarting themselves.
I'd run Murray wide where he has the edge.
This came out being OK for Tech. With fumble, OU still hasn't driven for a score on their own.
Before that drive
it looked like an OU meltdown. But it looks like Hazle settled down a bit on that drive. We could have a game in the 2nd half, particularly if OU scores to open the third quarter.
by BrooklynHorn on Nov 17, 2007 9:04 PM CST up reply actions
He did look better, more in control.
However, I'd bet he doesn't have a full playbook to operate from - and I bet Tech knows that. Sorta like the Chiles situation early in the year. OU will need everything but there will be a lot of plays they can't pull the string on because of Hazle's lack of experience.
47 pass attempts in the first half
jesus. harrell's arm is going to fall off before his senior year.
Harrell needs throwing lessons from Matsuzaka
then he could throw around 250 passes a game if he wanted. And then come out the next day and pitch a scoreless 9th for the Red Raider baseball team ;-)
by mvplonghorns on Nov 17, 2007 9:16 PM CST up reply actions
What is the record for pass atempts in a game?
We could see 100 for Harrell, especially if OU gets back in this one.
That keeps OU on the field a long, long time
I don't care how good a shape you're in, that will wear your ass out.
Wow, that is incredible.
Zombie DBs.
How many completions - cause that is even more running.
here's the link:
http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/2007/Inte...
Brennan completed 44 out of those 75 and Harrell also completed 44 out of his 69.
and harrell's currently on pace to throw 94 passes. out of control. i love it.
Counting the runs, that's over 50 plays
Would you figure OU giving up a 100 plays to Tech. Probably not something they planned for - or their defense can withstand if it happens. IVs all around.
We beat Tech
by getting the jump on them early and winning time of possession. That's not shaping up for OU -- what happens when that defense wears out and Tech starts scoring at will? I am looking forward to this ....
That was cute
OU opens the half with three straight short passes to open half? Why not just run it?
Greg? You in Lubbock?
that's the old
"they'll never expect the pass because our qb is so bad at passing!"
unfortunately for ou, that strategy necessarily includes being terrible at passing.
I'm not kidding
I will rip a testicle off if ou losses here. A lost chance at the MNC??? Oh boy!
These are you're testicle's talking:
We are worth a lot more than OU - and don't you forget it.
Yes, but do they understand the pain and agony?
This could be Wide World of Sports quality agony.
Or a Japenese game show
But I got one for this game and for for OSU to get us into the championship game.
Stoops looks flustered
He looks flustered on the sidelines now, and he looked like an idiot during his halftime interview.
Yes, I'm giggling.
Well done, sooners
Eat up the clock, score three. Way to win! All right, I am thinking about the Big XII championship all of a sudden, and wondering how we'll match up against Kansas.
Right. We'd be tied with OU if they lose.
And OSU looks much more formidable if Bradford can't go.
The Football Gods
somehow took Leach's misbegotten rant against refs as some sort of special sacrificial entry and rewarded him with the OU quarterback getting a concussion which tackling a Tech player returning an INT. And the Gods have maintained their steady control of the game, granting the Air to Tech, which has feasted and grown fatter by the minutes. Goats are bleating in Norman.
OU lost their QB
and that's all that needs to be said.
And if he's out for the OSU game, all UT probably advances to the Big XII championship game with an A&M victory.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 17, 2007 10:01 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not knowledgable enough to explain
but Tech's offense cannot be stopped...oh yea and bradford went down early.
If OU loses, the similarities to UT 2006 would be
stunning.
Both teams would go into the last 2 games of the year only needed one Big 12 win to clinch the title. Texas beat OU last year, OU beat Texas this year. Both teams would be lead by record setting freshmen who played well beyond their years, but had never suffered any injury going into the game. Both teams had good national championship aspirations going in. Both teams would suffer game-ending injuries to their QB thus effectively making them lose the second to last game to a team they would probably have beaten with a healthy qb.
Now, if Bradford is out for Bedlam and OU loses that one (a la Texas to A&M), then it would be really weird. Both teams would back themselves out of the conference title to their arch rival who they beat by losing two consecutive games to unranked teams to close the season.
For the hell of it, imagine that does happen, Texas wins the Big 12 and then goes to the Fiesta and has to play.... the Wac CHampion.... I just blew my mind.
This is just unbelieveable
Unfortunately, I have this sneeking suspcicion Bradford will be back next week, and that OU will be pissed and looking for blood, especially since everything is on the line next week.

Exactly what OU needs is a long drive, ala Texas last week, and to score to get back in it. However, the haven't really degraded Tech scoring ability and being two up would be as powerful for Tech as it was for the Horns.
ou seriously just needs to run
and hope for the best. halzle is not going to win this game by throwing the ball.

ok, anyone think the impossable?
ou losing 2 in a row? Anyone think that osu can pull it off? I guess we still have to beat the aggies but i think Derek and Frank will be bringing the pain next Friday.
if bradford is out
or he's still feling the effect, then yes. it could happen. if he's full strength, it's unlikely.
Forget Derek and Frank, we need the OLBs to bring
the pain and stop the damn option. That game will be won by the DE's and the OLB's spreading out the option plays that we have had so much trouble stopping the last two years.
Here's hoping Lokey gets to crush somebody as fullback.
Who do we want on the QB and the pitch man?
The safety or the OLB is the option. I could go with Griffin, not Ishi - not enough experience. I could go with Kindle or Norton.
Has to be Kindle and Norton
I don't know if I trust anybody in our secondary to be responsible for Goodson on the pitch, do you?
No.
Plus they had Bennett out there a lot; those LBs would fend off the big guy a little better. I would rather have the safeties stopping anything long and being the final line.
Back in the OU option days we used both corners and safeties, but there was only one WR usually. I'll take Jerry Gray in that situation, but this is now. I'll take the LBs, too.
Well,
I didn't think that we could lose two straight.
I didn't think that we could lose to "the little brother"
I thought that McCoy would play in the last regular season game since he only got a stinger.
i think it's basically the same thing that is happening to OU.
True but if our best D line defenders can
get penetration and maybe a bit of disruption then the rest of the line and LB's can exert more influence on any play the agrics run.
I'm more concerned
that the game is at hickville rather than Austin and that it may be Fran's last game. Inspired and all that crap. Blah.
As long as they don't have bonfire disasters
we'll be okay. Fran is a mixed blessing and everyone wants it to be over. We can help.
There is no bonfire.....

Tech realizes it has a tiger by the tail.
However, if Tech can do what it does best with this possession, they can win this game despite their defense.
Even worse
I think Hazle's getting some seasoning...he won't be all world, but if he has to start against OSU, he'll be serviceable.
Then again, if there's justice in this world, Bradford's dad will tell everyone that his son is just fine and he'll start against OSU.
If only the Cowboys had a defense.
There's still time
it's just a 2 possession game now. Tech is not scoring much this half. All we need is a turnover, and it's a game.

Ole Major might need a job after tonight.
I thought he was doing well, that Saban had something going, but losing to UL Monroe the natives are going to get restless.
Clock
Someone needs to tell Mike Leach that, no matter what play it is you feel like you need to call, it's okay to run the damn play clock down.
Leach knows he will need time
cause they can't stop OU now.
This game also reminds me of that infamous
UT-Tech game in Simms' junior year. Simms v. Kingsbury. We would have been vaulted to Number 1 or 2, and we lost that damn game 42-38 on a Simms INT in the clutch. Tech is tough at home, at night.
Leach's clock management is something to behold.

So, Leach bitched about the refs

So, Stoops sees this and responds with a rant of his own to preserve his edge against OSU.
if ou wins out from here
the national championship game will not be a big 12 team, as we all assumed it would. west virginia? tOSU?

All of this is eerily like last year.

Someone please verify this...
If OSU beats OU, the Horns will represent the South regardless of the outcome in College Station.
OSU, OU, and Texas would all be 5-3. With three teams tied, the Big 12 goes to the next highest team in the division. A&M and Tech would both be 4-4 but Tech beat the Aggies.
OU lost to Tech, so they are out. And Texas obviously beat the Cowboys and would represent the South in San Antonio.
Is this right?
I think you are right.
a) The winner of the game between two tied teams shall be the representative. - DOES NOT APPLY
b) If three or more teams are tied, then the record of the tied teams will be compared in a mini round-robin, to determine the representative. - ALL 2-1
c) If the teams remain tied, then there will be a comparison of the record of the tied teams within their division. - All with 2 losses within division
d) If the teams remain tied, then there will be a comparison of the record of the tied teams within their respective divisions, beginning with the next highest placed team(s) within the division and proceeding through the other placements in order of finish.
Depends how far
OU drops in the BCS standings. If we all end up 5-3, it then goes to how many division losses each has and we'd all have one North and two South losses. So then I think the team ranked highest in the BCS standing goes the Big XII title.
We know that won't be OSU because of they'd be 7-5, but I'm thinking OU will still be ranked above Texas tomorrow. And if we both lose, then we'll both move down with OU still slightly ahead.
Could be wrong though.
Found It
It wouldn't go to the BCS rankings until step five, but we should be able to determine the champ using step three.
So, obviously we need to take care of business on Friday, but even if we don't, the craziest year of college football ever could continue with us backing our way to the South title.
Do Not Want
The last time I saw a team back into a Big 12 Championship game like that, it was Colorado in 2006.
If we beat A&M, then I am want in the Big 12 championship, but not if we lose and then back into it.
Question du noir
Do you want to play in the Big XII Title game?
Seems like an easy answer, but say we be A&M and OU loses to OSU. If we lose in the title game, we'll be knocked out of BCS contention. Shades of 2001.
Obviously, I think you always want a shot at the title so this is probably moot, but it sure sets up nicely for both Mizzou and KU if one of those teams goes on to win the Big XII title.
Regardless, it's going to be fun week, especially if we take care of business on Friday.
I would love to
ruin Kansas' Cinderella season, and then whoop their ass at the Erwin Center in the spring semester. It's basically a home game for us too.

I thought we had a home game
against Colorado at Texas Stadium in 2001.
I want the shot at the title too no matter what, but it's just something to think about.
It's worth it though
Look, the MNC dream is over, so the next best goal SHOULD be a Big XII championship. The numbers matter, and right now, Mack Brown has I believe just that 1 Big XII title.
All the haters say Mack can't do jack without Vince Young. What if we win a Big XII title without VY? That'll shut 'em up.

I would
Shot at Big 12 title > guaranteed BCS game.
Losing Big 12 champ game probably puts us in Citrus or Cotton vs. a good opponent.
I think you meant Gator
Gator can pick a Big 12 team ahead of the Cotton and Holiday bowls and after the BCS bowls as long as only one Big 12 team is in the BCS, which is possible.
If two Big 12 teams make BCS bowls, then the Cotton would get the next selection.
Yeah Sorry
Florida Citrus Oranges. Stream of consciousness screwed me up
Which is the better option for UT?
- OU beats Okie State and loses to the KU/Mizzou winner in the Big12 Championship game. That probably puts the winner in the BCS title game, with a 2-loss Texas probably an at-large team.
- OU loses to Okie State, sending UT to the championship game. If we win, we get the Fiesta, but if we lose, we'll be a 3-loss team and would not get a BCS at large berth.
This is why...
I'm thinking things set very well for both Mizzou and KU going to a BCS provided one of them wins the Big XII title. Then again, one of them has to end the season with a loss.
Sucks
I can't see us moving up in the BCS after all this. Oregon and OU are the only teams to lose and while I think they'll drop behind all the one loss teams, I don't see them dropping behind us.
That might depend on Bradford
If the early word Sunday is that he's ok, then OU is not on such shaky ground. But he and Murray are both gone, they'll lose voters' confidence, too.
I do think OU is in better shape than Oregon.
It's ridiculous
that Ohio State still has an outside shot at making the MNC. This is been a crazy year of college football, and you're telling me that OSU doesn't even have to worry about playing in a conference championship game. Pathetic.

Drinking the Burnt Orange Kool-aid but...
OU loses to Colorado and Texas Tech.
Texas loses to K-State and OU.
Could someone map out why OU will be ranked 4-7 spots higher than Texas.

Regardless
which Big 12 team win or lose today, we as a Longhorns fans should be proud to be one of the family of Big 12 Conference. Three of the Big 12 teams are sitting on top 5 of the BCS poll until OU lost tonight. It just shows how our conference are getting stronger in the late season.
During pre-season, some says Big 12 is the weakest conference in the league. Now, at least, it's not the case especially, if Kansas becomes an unbeaten team this year.
Of course, I can't wait to see our Horns play against them for the Big 12 title in San Antonio.
Hook'em!
Think I've got it figured out
OK, now pay attention.
- The winner of next week's Missouri/Kansas game represents the Big 12 North in the Championship game.
a) If Oklahoma beats Okie State, they represent the Big 12 South regardless of anything else.
b) If OU loses and UT beats A&M, then Texas goes.
c) If OU loses and UT loses, then there's a 3-way tie at 5-3 in conference standings between UT, OU, and OSU. The first tie-breaker doesn't work, since UT beat OSU, OSU beat OU, and OU beat UT. The second tie-breaker is win/loss record against the rest of the teams in the Big 12 South, starting with the next team not part of the tie. There would be two teams tied at 4-4 in this scenario, A&M and Tech, but Tech beat A&M so they come first. OU lost to Tech so they drop out, then it's just UT and OSU, and we go back to the top where UT beat OSU so Texas goes.
Thus, if OU loses next week, UT goes to the Big 12 Championship regardless of whether we beat A&M.
- There's a good chance that either Missouri or Kansas could play for the National Championship should they win the Big 12 Championship.
a) If OU goes to the Big 12 game and loses, they will be 10-3, while Texas would be 10-2 (assuming we beat A&M). A 2-loss UT would probably draw a better bowl than a 3-loss OU, possibly a BCS at-large bid, but we'd be competing with 11-1 Kansas, and/or 10-2 Missouri.
b) If OU goes to the Big 12 game and wins, they get an automatic Fiesta bid. The loser of the Big 12 game would be either 12-1 (Kansas) or 11-2 (Missouri), and might be more attractive than a 10-2 UT. Kansas would be ranked higher than us, not sure about Missouri.
c) If UT goes to the Big 12 game and wins, they get an automatic Fiesta bid.
d) If UT goes to the Big 12 game and loses, they'll be 10-3 (or even 9-4 if we lose to A&M) and there's no way we'd get a BCS bid. The Gator, Cotton, and Holiday (in that order) pick what's left of the Big 12 that didn't go to the BCS, and we'd be competing with a 9-3 OU, a 12-0 or 11-1 Kansas, and/or 11-1 or 10-2 Missouri.
Here's the bottom line:
- If OU wins next week, we want them to win the Big 12. That maximizes our bowl chances by hopefully dropping Kansas and/or Missouri behind us in the rankings.
- If OU loses next week, we want UT to win the Big 12 (of course) - with a win we're in the Fiesta, but with a loss we're in a lower tier bowl game.
Thanks a lot for the clarification
This is almost fascinating to me.
How hilarious (or not) would it be that we could lose to A&M, and STILL advance to the Big 12 championship game, and possibly win that and get an automatic BCS bid, while A&M claims scoreboard!?... LOL.
So then the OU/OSU can almost be interpreted as a win/win for us.
If OU wins, then while we won't be able to get a Big 12 championship, all we have to do is beat A&M and we probably get a BCS bid (but we must pray that OU wins the Big 12, which sucks).
If OU loses, then there's no pressure at all to win the A&M game, AND we can win a Big 12 title by playing the role of the bad-ass villain and destroying Kansas' dreams. But the A&M game is before the OU/OSU game, so we might as well just win it for the sake of my sanity.

If OU beats OSU
I think we want Kansas to win the Big 12, thus we would only be competing against a 10-2 Mizzou and a 10-3 OU. I think we would prefer not to compete against a 1-loss Kansas.
Makes sense
Then in that case, if OU beats OSU, then we don't have a good chance at a BCS.
We'd be ranked higher than a 10-3 OU team, but we shouldn't be ranked higher than a 10-2 Missourah team with losses to OU and KU, or a 11-1 KU team, with only loss being to OU. Hopefully the money factor is bigger than I think it is.

Rankings dont matter
10-2 Texas goes over a 10-2 Missouri, unless somehow Missouri somehow stays in the top 4. 11-1 Kansas is tougher to jump.
It's set up now
Beat A&M and root like hell for Okie State
Earn a real berth to the BCS and don't worry about computers and who you need to lose so you can get an "at-large" berth
Go for the conference title. That should be the main concern. It seems more people would rather get a BCS berth than a Big 12 title
I would...
rather get a BCS bowl birth than a Big XII title. However, since the title comes with a birth, I want both. But if it was an either/or, I would choose the BCS birth.
Why?
Shouldn't your goal, your first goal, be to win the conference? At-large berths don't mean anything. Who says the Fiesta Bowl is more prestigous than the Cotton Bowl? TV bigwigs? Cotton Bowl has been around much longer.
The goal should be to win conference. If you take care of that, then the great bowl and possible shot at the national championship are within reach. Everything falls in place when you win your conference.
If at-large berths were part of an eight-team tournament, then it's one thing. The BCS was set up to put the "two best teams in the title game" and to reward conference champs. At-large berths were created for the Notre Dames and WAC schools of the world. It's set up to reward teams for great seasons (conference titles, national championships, etc)
Occasionally you get a team like Texas that gets in and puts on a great show against Michigan. I just don't see all the fuss about getting into one of these bowls when you're not playing for a title and you didn't win your conference.
Thanks PB for not overglorifying these bowls and saying that you look for a good game whether it's against SEC in the Cotton or Pac 10 in either Holiday or Fiesta. It's all about matchups.
Winning your conference
If winning your conference is your first goal, then we should move to C-USA and win it every year. Then we would be rewarded with a nice game in the liberty bowl against an SEC team.
I would rather play someone that is in the top 14 of the BCS in a BCS bowl - like Georgia, ASU, etc. than play someone like Auburn or Tennessee in the Cotton bowl or Boston College or Virginia in the Gator.
If you asked me if I would rather lose two or three games in nonconference play and then undefeated in the conference or lose a conference game and end up ranked about 8 and go to the Sugar Bowl - I would pick the latter every time.
Let me reiterate
I would rather win the conference because that would mean we would get to go to a BCS bowl anyway and get the greater exposure that it entails.
