Volleyball Preview - UT vs KState
Well this weekend certainly is not going the way I wanted it to go. But the Gregory Gazelles can still take care of business and win the Big 12 Saturday and get their #1 seed on Sunday. I expect them to come out with way more intensity than the football team.
I will forego the usual position comparison and provide keys to the game for Texas:
1) Shake off the ISU hangover Apparently Ashley was throwing up before, during and after the match. The team didn't leave Ames until Thursday morning. Having to go to 5 games will hopefully not take a toll. The team needs to come out strong and break the bad habit they've developed lately of playing from behind.
2) Get past the emotion of senior night In the last couple of years, senior night has been a relatively small deal. This year will be one of the largest classes to go out in Jerritt's tenure. It will be a new experience for many as typically the nucleus of the team returns. This senior night we are saying goodbye to our nucleus.
3) Assert our will Texas and KSU are similar in that both rely heavily on their outside hitters but try to establish the middles and the right side. We need to be able to assert our will and control their outsides while shutting down their middle. Michelle needs to keep our middles involved most notably feed the ball to Lauren & Brandy.
I'm sick of football at this point, so I will enjoy the experience of watching Destinee and Juliann pound the absolute crap out of the volleyball. It will be cathartic.

4. Service Game
KSU leads the Big XII in Service Aces, and I wouldn't be surprised if Texas leads the Big XII in Service Errors. On an amazing team, this is the one facet of the game where we are mortal. In the first game in Manhattan, Texas lost both battles - 4 to 13 on aces, 13 to 13 on service errors - and it nearly cost us the match.
Texas has got to minimize the execution errors at the service line tonight, and Alyson and the rest of the back row must dig the heck outta the KSU serves, or we're going to be in for another 5-game match to close out the year.

Agreed
Serve receive and passing is the achilles heel of this team. How well we do in this area is going to determine how far we go in the NCAAs.

Man I'm going to miss Brandy
I know Michelle has been the heart and soul of this team for four years, but Brandy has been its spirit for five - pretty much since I started following Texas Volleyball. Thanks for all the great memories, Brandy - and best of luck in whatever is next in your life.

No Texas jinx in Gregory tonight
Texas pulls out a tight one 30-25 in Game One but has absolutely blown KSU out of the water in Game Two 30-18, hitting a sizzling .600 to get Texas within one game of the Big XII title.
Let's go Horns, seal it in 3!

Congratulations Big XII Champion Texas Longhorns!
The Gazelles pull it out in 3, winning a share of the title with a 30-26 win in the last game.
Nice way to head into the post-season. Sacramento here we come!
