Look, people...
I am in no way excusing any player or coach, but if you really thought the last two teams were championship-caliber you're delusional. Longhorn fans have a long history of putting unrealistic expectations on the football program. If those expectations were met, we would win the MNC every year. NOBODY has that kind of success. While the last two years should have been better, there was no way we were going to win it all. So much went wrong this year in every conceivable fashion. You just can't overcome all the injuries, disciplinary issues, etc. week after week when you simply lack the talent to do so.
DA had a HORRIBLE year, but the players on the field weren't up to the task to begin with. We all knew the secondary was going to be a problem and it was. We were never going to win anything significant with that lot. Colt has had a wildly inconsistent season, which I think confirmed once-and-for-all what I think most of us already knew: he is not a transcendent player. If that's what you need/expect from him, he will disappoint you. I'll not even bother with GD except to say he's had better AND worse years.
There is plenty of blame to go around, but this team ended up about how I thought they would. Losing to ou and atm just makes it particularly repugnant.

wait wait wait
why?
look at the schedule
name one game this season that had we approached things differently it wouldn't have been a victory
we have better talent than kansas state
better talent than the aggies
and lord if we don't telegraph the blitz we're on sam bradford at least once
add that to a high ranking every preseason
yes ... we expect to at least make it there
ex. last year ... was ohio state a great team?
no ... by no stretch were they ... but they had a generally lax schedule
and had we been able to open the play book on offense and defense we would've easily at least made a game out of it
and they went on to play for a championship
our expectations are within reason
the bcs system is set up now that get ranked high, win all your games, play in the championship
it's that simple, you don't have to be the best
you just have to win
so we schedule cup cakes in the preseason and go from there
so if you look back in the last 4-5 years ... name a game that we were outmatched
the michigan rose bowl year ... we should've easily have beaten the sooner
it's scheme, it's personnel choices, it's bad training ... it's something ... but it's not out of reason to expect what we're capable of doing

here's the flaw with yur argument
Any team can beat one inferior team. Only great teams can beat 12 of them. If you are only marginally better than the teams you are playing against, one of them will end up beating you.
There were A LOT of teams this season that lost to clearly inferior opponents. Does that make their coaches bad? I disagree. I think it just happens sometimes, specially to teams that aren't that good. Our team this year? not that good. Why? because we won a NC two years ago. The implication in the recruiting cycle is a direct result.
This last 2 years we had good teams, but not great teams. Things didn't go our way with injuries, and as a result we finished like we did.
I think Duane Akina deserves at least one more year to prove that his scheme can work, because I can see on offseason to implement a scheme can't be easy. But if results next year are as poor as this year, there is no excuse, and he needs to move back to DB coach.

akina
i agree with you about coach akina. i think he does deserve one more year to prove himself. he did after all coach more than a few DBs playing in the nfl. next year he should have more to work with. next year he has no choice but to start muckelroy and kindle and i think the DBs should be fine. beasley and palmer return and they should be better with another year of experience under them. they started oduegwu at safety to get him some experience too so i'm not so concerned about the back seven. what shocked me about the a&m game was how little pressure there was on stephen mcgee. the DL is losing 3 starters so i dont know. the defense as a whole should be much improved next year though. SHOULD is the key word.
