Jevan Snead
No one is thinking this, but it has already been reported that Houston Nutt-Job is going to Ole Miss, where his qb will be Jevan Snead.....how bout that for a son of a bitch and irony.
Anyways, I was thinking, what can we expect from Ole Miss with Nutt and Snead there? I think given Snead's athletic ability, it should get interesting.

Jevan Snead will be
a very successful college quarterback. And with the proper tutelage, will play in the NFL.
Whether he will receive that at Ole Miss remains to be seen.

Agreed.
Next year, I'm going to watch Snead. He was sick.

I don't understand
In relief duty for hte first couple weeks of '06, he looked good. Had all the makings of a great QB, great mobility, and an abslolute rifle arm. His passes did not take very long to get from A to B.
We truly wasted him.

wasted him how?
What wouldve really been a waste would be for him to sit on a bench for the rest of his eligibility.
Both parties made the right choice. I just wish he wouldve waited til the end of the season to make his transfer decision.

Yeah.
A lot of the players thought Snead would start. I remember Selvin Young said he had a cannon like Brett Farve. I think he would have fit the scheme a lot better being recruited as a dual-threat QB and all.
I don't blame him for starting. He could have performed his heart out and Mack and Co. would still have stuck him on the bench. I don't understand them.
I honestly thought after Colt threw 4 INT's in the Kansas State game, we'd see Harris or Chiles play, even just temporarily...
Anyway, we will see in the next couple of years. I do agree he'll probably wind up playing on Sundays.

and a lot of the fans thought so too...
including me...
However, once the actual play on the field started, there was no question at all that Colt was far more ready.
I believe Snead has a ton of potential, but can anyone here bemoaning Mack's handling of the situation truly say that there was any time last year - ON THE FIELD - that Jevan looked better than Colt???
I think in the end, it was bad timing for all concerned. In fact, the whole QB situation has been victim to bad timing...
Because we "had" Lyin' Ryan, we didn't go after Chase Daniel. Certainly a defensible recruiting decision at the time. Then when Vince left, we were left with only a redshirt and a true freshman, and we were in essence forced to burn Jevan's redshirt. When he left, and Harris got hurt, we ended up burning Chiles' redshirt. You could argue that the staff should have not trusted Perriloux, but I doubt anyone would have been happy at the time if we'd dropped him and gone after Daniel. You could argue that Jevan had a bigger upside, but, again, at the time, he was clearly being outplayed by a considerable margin.
The one decision I find most incomprehensible is the usage of Chiles this year. When they finally played him, they also played Harris, so the injury was not a determining factor anymore. And, frankly, the way he was used, and the amount he was used, and the amount of development he still needs, I don't see how it's just a waste of 25% of John Chiles' career here...

It was the A&M Game, where the coache's decided
to stick with a 1/3 power Colt instead of a healthy Jevan who should have had two weeks to prepare for the game after the KSU game.
Jevan realized that if the coache's would rather play a guy who couldn't throw the ball 10 yards with any accuracy (due to a shoulder injury) over him at full health, he would never pass him.
To his credit, he was right. He never would have played this season here. Mack never got him into games in the early part of last season, and the staff's infatuation with Colt would have doomed Jevan to Matt Nordgren status. He was too good for that, and I wish him the best at Ole Miss.
It sure would have been nice to have him though. It's okay because at least we were able to convince John Brantly that he would have more fun here on a team where he might play as opposed to backing up Tim Tebow for 4 years. Wait, what? We didn't get Brantley? Damn.

Nutt would...
...have given his left ...ah, umm arm if could have obtained J.Snead's signature on a LOI. Jevan has done everything asked of him at Ole Miss. His leadership is unquestioned and he is ready to take the starter's job. Nutt will want to win immediately, so expect him to run an offense designed to build on Jevan's strengths.
by HornChamps on Nov 27, 2007 11:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Jevan is always
ready to take the starters job.
He just never wants to compete for it.
Beware of QBs who quite or transfer twice before a full season even ends.

maybe it's just me,
but i feel like jevan def got wronged here by mack and the other coaches, much in the same way that chiles has been this season. jevan is a true athlete that was a solid fit for the zone-read system that we run, but for whatever reason, we stayed with colt during the bad times and the really bad times the past two seasons. he made a logical decision to leave and i wish him all the best.

I dont get it
we stayed with colt during the bad times and the really bad times the past two seasons
You mean the bad times when he was breaking the record for freshman touchdowns?
There is no way that the coaches bench him after that. Both the coaches and Sneed made the right decision based on the information they had at the time.

Re:
Seriously, Snead had every chance to win the starting job outright. He enrolled early, looked great in spring practices, and I daresay most of the fanbase was surprised when Colt started taking the lead towards the end of the summer.
Snead still got garbage time to show off his ample skills, and he had an entire game against KSU in which he acquitted himself quite well. He also had the opportunity to stick around for the Alamo Bowl, in which its likely the coaches would've allowed him to play rather than risk further injury to Colt in a meaningless (to us, anyway...probably not to Mack and his tenth win) bowl game. He chose not to stick around and wait and see on Colt's prognosis before deciding to bolt for greener (The Grove) pastures.
I wish him all the best of luck, but it's not like the guy didn't have opportunity here at Texas. Colt outplayed him last year, and he didn't feel like sticking around to challenge him another season.

RE:

Are you referring to a school record? As he certainly didn't break the national record. He fell one short with 28.
Now Sam Bradford of OU, with 32 already, has most certainly broken the national record of 29.
by HornChamps on Nov 28, 2007 11:29 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The MB-TF.com and NCAA Sports websites
has him down for 29 in 2006, so I guess he only tied it.
Yes, Sam Bradford of OU did break the record this year, nice non sequitur.

Re:
I really, really hope Robinson and Loadholt declare for the draft, so Bradford too can know what it means to play behind an inexperienced line.
While you're at it, NFL, go on and take Lofton, Reggie Smith, Malcolm Kelly, et al, while you're at it.
by jc25 on Nov 28, 2007 12:29 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he got the 29th
in the Alamo Bowl, which count towards his season statistics and which tied with with the kid from Nevada in 1999, I think. And without getting hurt, he probably would have had around or more than the 32 Bradford got this year. Both had great years.
And seriously, why must you degrade everything Texas? I sometimes wonder if you're more satisfied when Texas is winning or losing. Were you even happy that Texas won the national championship or were you upset that it meant Mack Brown would be staying around a little longer? Or did it actually make you more happy to know that Mack would be around a little longer because you're actually happier when you have something to complain about? Do you even root for the team to win these days? I'm not trying to be mean here; these are legitimate questions. I just don't understand your mindset at all.

And seriously, why must you degrade everything Texas?
Since when is correcting errors considered "degrad(ing) everything Texas"?? Your paranoia is disturbing. Try to keep it in check.

well...
a) it wasn't actually a mistake, as 3 people pointed out. you were the mistaken one.
b) virtually all of your posts are negative towards Texas or someone associated with Texas, either directly or implicitly.
Maybe you just keep all your positive thoughts to yourself and only post the negative ones, I don't know. Just something I've noticed and was wondering what was behind it. You obviously don't have to answer if you don't want to.

To be...
...accurate, your brother falsely claimed that Colt McCoy had broken the record for freshman passing TDs. I accurately pointed out that he had not.
I then pointed out that Sam Bradford has actually broken the record by passing for 32 TDs. He still has 2 games remaining.
by HornChamps on Nov 29, 2007 11:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My apologies
You were in fact correct in stating that he did not break the record (though of course you were incorrect in stating that he only had 28, but you know, bygones, etc.).

no problem, bro
you going to be at the family reunion this year, bro?

Jevan
My roommate went to Ole Miss and he said all of the rumors there are about Snead transferring back to Texas because he misses his girlfriend. It's funny that I haven't heard those rumors at all on any Texas boards.
by Texas Wahoo on Nov 28, 2007 6:05 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Because it won't happen
Jevan decommitted to Florida to come to Texas, then transferred after 1 year. Coming back is not in his cards.
by GoHorns on Nov 28, 2007 9:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He would lose another year of eligibility
meaning he would have to sit a year and then would only have two years to play. I don't think that would happen.
by Wells on Nov 28, 2007 9:40 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Is that true?
He has to sit out another year even if he sat out this year without playing? I'm not sure what the rule is in this situation, but I have heard the opposite, that because he didn't play this year, he can play next year whether he is.
by Texas Wahoo on Nov 28, 2007 10:58 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't have the rule book
but I am pretty sure he has to take another year off.

I didn't realize the market was so shallow
for stud college QBs.
Maybe someone should start a fund or a special black book list.
Or maybe it's just the Texas women...you get what you deserve.

I also have OleMiss friends
Go look at Jevan's Facebook page. Doesn't look like he misses his girlfriend THAT bad.

It actually looks like he misses her a lot
Although she's apparently in Stephenville, not Austin.

let the revisionist history begin
Snead stunk in the Kansas State game in '06. his line:
13 of 30, 190 yards. 5 sacks. Less than 7 yards per pass attempt. 12 carries, -2 yards.
Any proclamations that Sneed is an NFL talent is premature at this point. His arm strength is pretty good, but he's not nearly accurate enough to be considered a legit pro prospect yet.
And that's not even mentioning any of the attitude and vascillation issues that NFL GMs and scouts are very wary of generally.

Re-invisioning History is what Texas fans do best
I even think "Revisionist History 1960-present" is a required course at UT.

he misses his girlfriend?
what a puss. Ole Miss isn't New Jersey, he should be able to find some honeys there. I doubt that's actually true, but if it is he needs to start worrying about football...
by BMG on Nov 28, 2007 10:04 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
seriously, my thoughts exactly BMG
He just seems soft to me, and I'm not sure he's not going to face plenty more adversity in the next several years. Next year's going to be ugly for Ole Miss (new coach, losing several of their linemen), so really he will have about 2 years to display his talents in earnest. Furthermore, with the hiring of Nutt, it's not entirely implausible that their current QB - forget his name, but some black dude that actually throws and runs pretty well - will get plenty of snaps next year. Nutt doesn't like to throw the ball too much either, so I'd hold the phone on saying Sneed is ready to break out in a bigway.

Ole Miss QB: Brent Schaeffer
former WR and backup QB at Tennessee to Ainge. Terrible passer, decent rusher when he has to (LSU game). And a senior. Started the year as a backup to some other guy (another senior), but took over late in the season. Looks like Snead will be competing for the starting spot with a handful of (current) freshmen and a sophomore.

compete? uh-oh
Hopefully he wont have to compete too hard or he'll bail like he's done twice before. Is there a limit to the number of times someone can transfer?
by aarontexas01 on Nov 28, 2007 8:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Bail?
Pfff! More like fell for some promises of a real opportunity to compete, only to find that a decision was made only 3 days into August practice. Mack's allergies were acting up. Anything to avoid the appearance of a QB controversy.
