Interest in Major

Maybe old news to this group by now - but...

http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/mo...

The top quarterback among Alabama's 2008 commitments said it "would be big for me" if offensive coordinator Major Applewhite left the Crimson Tide for another school.

"Major is a big reason why I'm going to Alabama," said Star Jackson, a touted dual-threat quarterback from Lake Worth, Fla.

ESPN.com reported Wednesday that Applewhite was contacted by Houston about its open head coaching position, and the Cougars aren't the only ones interested. Sources close to SMU have said Applewhite is high on the Mustangs' list of potential candidates, and Southern Miss is rumored to also have an interest in the 29-year-old Tide assistant.

Would it not suck if Major keeps up from getting rid of GD?

I assume

that you are referring to if Major got the HC job at SMU

My kid may have given up a costly fumble against OU, but at least he's never been accused of face raping.

Yes...

"keeps up" should read "keeps us"

Norm on The Ticket

made some strong points about how the SMU head coaching job is a career killer.

If "The" Major spends another year or two at Alabama, works with his and Saban's recruits, he'll skyrocket past the middle-tier type programs.  I can't imagine him at SMU, but if he ends up there, I'd become a Mustang fan immediately.

SMU! PLEASE HIRE GD!

Hire the guy who taught the best candidate everything he knows!

First I've heard of this

The only thing being talked about regarding Major here right now is Southern Miss, and I just heard that a few minutes ago. Of course, the media is all-consumed with the Tuberville-to-Arkansas rumors right now, so it's easy to see how Major's career path might slip under the radar for the time being.

SMU will be hiring Paul Johnson of Navy

I expect an announcement sometime after Navy beats Army tomorrow.

At the risk...

of being sacreligious, am I the only one who thinks that the Major hype might be a little overblown?  I love him as much as the next guy, but why exactly are we convinced that he's such a sure thing?  I understand the "he's gotta be better than GD" logic, but beyond that I think I need a larger body of evidence to buy in completely.  He might develop into a very good coach, but I'm not quite ready to turn the program over to him.

After watching his game plan against LSU I was

convinced that he is a better game day strategist than anybody on our staff.  Watch that game.  Alabama lost, but Major's offense put that team in constant position to win that game.

Cougar High

Barking Carnival said Major is a candidate to replace Art Briles at Houston.

Of all the schools mentioned above, I can see Major going there if he leaves Alabama at all (which I don't think he will).

Successful coordinators at big time schools seem like they're just as attractive for head coaching vacancies as successful head coaches at small schools are.

But if Major wants to run the show, Houston gives him ample opportunity...he can recruit the hell out of the Houston and surrounding areas to field a team that will be very competitive in Conf. USA. And it wouldn't take that long to pull it off and the expectations of that fan base won't add too much pressure on him to be successful right ways.

He wins a couple of Conf. USA titles, takes Houston to some decent bowls, he'll be tops on all the wish lists of Big Time programs looking for new head coaches.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.
