Jamaal Charles Is Disgusting
I'm still waiting on someone to post video of Charles' 75-yard run against Okie State, but in the meantime, how about a nice video recap of Charles' outburst two Saturdays ago against the Huskers?
Damn...

Ummm
Yeah
I want it isolated. The long highlights are awesome, too, but I want that run in particular to show off.
I though the 2nd Quarter TD
was the best. He made the defender break down and then flop futilely on his side as JC ran by.
re: Futile Flop
Wasn't that some dance in the 80's?
Charles
Three weeks ago, Charles was the goat of the team for fumbling too often (remember TX-OU?) Granted his performances in the last two games have been beyond incredible, but are we the type of fans that love a player one week and beat down the next? Charles has awesome speed, and decent power, but I'm not sure his ability to make cuts or his vision are really even above average. He's turned in a couple of nice runs, PB, but "disgusting?"

Its bizarre to think
that Charles is only a few games away from his Senior season, and the jury is still out on him.
I would characterize his complex career in this way: he has "disgusting" physical skills (speed, vision, agility), but his attitude has been inconsistent.
He was a warrior next to Vince, but has seemed indifferent at times throughout this season. Its been discussed a lot on this site, but to give JC the benefit of the doubt, I think he might have been frustrated running in a poor scheme behind an equally poor offensive line, and he let it get to him.
Perhaps now we are seeing the re-emergence of Warrior Charles.

Jamaal's vision
I'm not a scout, but Jamaal's vision is 'disgusting' and way way above average! the ability to make cuts, I'm not sure, but vision ...
Fumbling...
Three weeks ago, Charles was the goat of the team for fumbling too often (remember TX-OU?)
.
...seems kind of silly when you put in a historical perspective. Granted, the OU fumble was costly and extremely untimely, but this season has been relatively clean. Mack's teams have averaged 22 fumbles with 10 lost, per season.
.
Season/Fumbles/Lost
- 22/12
- 23/12
- 18/11
- 13/5
- 13/6
- 30/18
- 23/7
- 35/9
- 25/14
Prior Seasons' Avg: 22/10
Current Year: 12/5, On-pace for 16/7 - Full Season
Nice reality check.
It's the INTs pushing down the net TO ratio into minus territory. Overall, fumbling has not been a problem, although obviously it has hurt on key plays.
Generally you can assess the relative success of any team by their TO ratio. Sometimes you can win despite them. Witness 2005, when the Horns had more fumbles than any time in Mack's tenure - 35 is a lot of fumbles but the Horns were great in recovering their own miscues. So far, this year is better than average.
Fumbles redux
OK, OK, so maybe we shouldn't be upset about Charles' fumbles. I still take issue with "disgusting." First, I have rarely heard that word used in a positive sense. Second, Ricky Williams was "disgusting." Vince Young was "disgusting." Jamaal Charles?

That's why I want video of that 75 yard run Sat.
It was absolutely special. There just aren't many football players who burst through the narrow hole the way Charles did.
How about "sick"?
yes, disgusting!

I think if you'll go back, we've loved Charles around here for a long, long time.
If you're "his ability to make cuts or his vision are really even above average", I maintain you've not watched him very much, or you're defining "average" as Gale Sayers-level. And he's turned in more than just a "couple of nice runs" this year.
Even the two big fumbles that stick in everyone's mind - vs. UCF and vs. OU, came on truly outstanding runs. That may have made them seem even worse. But - when someone (and trust me, there'll be more than a couple) puts together a YouTube video of Jamaal's highlights this year, they'll have a lot to choose from, and they'll look really, really good.
I think we have a tendency to get frustrated at blown up plays, and we forget that those happen to every single running back that ever lived. Even the great Earl Campbell had some no-gainers. Not many, since he had a much better run-blocking line than Jamaal has ever had (in college - I'm not talking about that abortion of an offense they stuck him in at Houston...), but I was there, and they did happen.
The thing with Jamaal is he will never be an Earl, or a Ricky, or a Cedric Benson. He won't break tons of tackles (although he's surprisingly strong and slippery), and he won't run over anybody. If you give him holes to run through, he'll get you a ton of yards, but he does need the holes. The runner he most reminds me of is Tony Dorsett. Quickness, blazing speed, more power than you'd expect... Tony was lucky enough to play for good lines too, of course.
If our young guys develop, and if they get good at run-blocking (even last year's line, although way more talented than this year's, was a great pass-blocking line, but a mediocre run-blocking line.), I think you could see something truly special from Jamaal Charles.

Jamaal Charles & Draft?
Does anyone has any inside information on what is Jamaal's stance on declaring for draft after this year?
how
'bout you keep beating a dead horse.
arggh!!!
man, there will be enough video highlights of plays against us in a single season to last a lifetime.
i suppose.
that's the way it goes.

Its winter-Texas has certainly turned up the HEAT
It seems that the players have finally (over the last couple of games) accepted the fact that the season is not going to be a walk in the park and have really turned it on, especially in the fourth quarter. It is nice to see a fire lit under their asses. J. Charles has finally broke out as well. I'm excited to how the rest of the season plays out. With a dozen or so more 75 yard touchdown runs by Charles- why not J. Charles for Heisman? It could happen. Keep it going and give em hell!
Hook 'Em
Interesting nuggets...
The five biggest comebacks in the 115-year history of Texas football all have come under Brown -- and now, three of them have come against Oklahoma State.
The Longhorns now have lost just two of their past 35 true road games, and those two were by a combined seven points. [this doesn't include the RRS]
In fact, since Brown was blown out in the first two road trips of his debut season (in 1998 at UCLA and Kansas State), the Horns haven't lost a single road game by more than a touchdown.
Hey, if [Charles] had been able to do [use his average from the past 2 fourth quarters] every quarter the past two weeks, he would be averaging 682 rushing yards per game with 20 touchdowns.

i'm still mad
about that loss to Tech in Lubbock in 2002. Mostly because I was there, sitting in the Tech student section in burnt orange trying not to get beaten to death. Half the starting defense got injured in that game as Tech mounted a big 2nd half rally and sealed it with an interception of Simms at 5 yard line in the final minute when the receiver ran the wrong route.
Now I'm all aggravated thinking about it.....damnit.

the 682 yards is assuming you turn the fatigue setting off your NCAA '08, and put the quarter length up to 10 minutes.

Here's a Link (Kind of)
Not isolated, but it includes the 75 yarder from Charles.

4Q Domination
JC in the 4Q of the past 2 games...
20 carries
331 yards
16.5 ypc
5 TDs
1 TD every 4 attempts
That is unbelievable!!! I don't care who the competition is, that is just nuts/sick/disgusting/whacko/whatever.
I've always thought that his running style looks a little odd - He seems to be tight-roping as he tries to avoid opposing ends attempting to get to the outside - I must say that I now understand the OL comments about him always being just one step from breaking the big runs.
