I like your pick

I wasn't trying to say that good qbs don't go to unknown type schools.  I knew about McNair and Romo.  I was just surprised that I didn't know that Culpepper went to UCF.  Was that before they were division I-A?

BON 2007 football season

Hey guys, just wanted to say I had fun bantering back and forth with some of you during this year. I didn't particularly chime in during Longhorn Open Game Threads, but had fun during the other Open Thread ... especially those three or four consecutive Saturday nights when SEC games went to the wire

PB - thanks for having this site. I probably spent way too much time here during the season. But it was time wasted well worth spent.

I look forward to next football season ... but of course we have the bowl season first!

ESPN Reports on Miles

This morning Herbstreit reported that Miles was gone to Michigan. Now the ESPN headline says Miles has scheduled a press conference to announce that he is staying at LSU.

Will LSU fans be pleased or pissed at this announcement?

Tony Barnhardt ...

Just reported the same on CBS halftime show

I don't know what to think. Still don't like the cat. He gambled so many times and it paid off this year

He lost two games in 3OT

He had the team ready and primed for a National title ... then lost... I was looking forward to a new coach. Let's see if he wins the conference title first

I just saw his statement on ABC

He didn't say anything of substance. He simply and empahtically said that "he is and will be the coach of LSU."

That's what he should be saying the day of a conference championship game.  He didn't say that he talked to Michigan and declined their offer, and he certainly didn't say he would still be the coach of LSU next season.

His statement means nothing. He sounded like a man who didn't want all this speculation to affect his team's performance these last two games more than he sounded like a man pledging his allegience, long term, to his employer.

It wasn't Les Miles that announced this shit before LSU's biggest game of the season. Same with Pelini going to Nebraska (which I'll believe when it comes out of Tom Osborne's mouth).

Oregon State

up 21-7 at Autzen Stadium. This should surprise nobody, after the way Oregon has played the last couple of weeks. But it is of interest to us, as the winner of this game may be our opponent in the Holiday Bowl.

that Missouri wouldn't simply bend over and take it from OU again, as they had done in October, but from the looks of that first drive, they've already turned around and pulled their pants down.

Just for the record

October 12, 1968, the Cotton Bowl.

The winning drive began with just over two minutes left and Texas at its own 15. The brand new wishbone was down 20-19. James Street started the drive with four straight passes - three of those in a row were look-in passes to Pete Lammons the TE - and the fourth was also a completion. No one expected that third pass to Lammons; hell, no one expected the second. With OU loosened up, the wishbone worked great and Steve Worster scored the game winner from 7 yards out. That was the second win in what would be a 30-game winning streak and a couple of NCs.

It all started with the same play run three times in a row.

Halftime show on Georgia

they said the voters wouldn't vote for them to make the MNC, since they didn't win their own division. LSU would jump over them.

Think they would really do that?

In that case, #5 KU couldn't jump Georgia either since they didn't win the Big 12 North.

But Virginia Tech is ahead of #7 LSU, so maybe Va Tech jumps up to the MNC?

You talk about an amazing story if that happened, given the tragedy on their campus last spring semester.

However, since LSU beat Va Tech head to head, that would seem odd to me.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 1, 2007 9:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

that would be ridiculous

USC is right behind LSU, and OU is right behind USC. I would put OU in the MNC before I'd put USC because at least OU beat the #1 team. USC beat UCLA and did not have a conference championship game.

No surprise that ESPN would say that USC is playing the best right now. I also heard somewhere that if there was an 8 team playoff, USC would win it hands down and all this other GARBAGE.

marshalld

by duras on Dec 1, 2007 9:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

contradiction

if you want Pitt to win, then that means tOSU is in the MNC game though.

If you're into chaos, root for Mizzou and West Virginia to lose. I'd love to see the voters have the nerves to vote for Georgia as the #2 team, given that they didn't even make the SEC game. I'd also love to see the voters have the nerves to NOT vote for Georgia.

There would be controversy either way.

Oh, and Georgia didn't even have to play LSU this year. Another reason why it's a joke that teams don't have to play every team in their own conference. I've never understood that.

by goingforthecorner on Dec 1, 2007 9:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Georgia is clearly

better than LSU at this point but LSU played an extra game and beat a team that crushed Georgia.  WTF SHOUL happen?

marshalld

by duras on Dec 1, 2007 9:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Can anybody use the word "clearly" to describe

any team anymore?  Every team has sucked at some point this year.  Ohio State played one really good team, and they lost to them at home.  KU and Ohio State have almost the exact same crummy resume.  Georgia got blown out against Tennessee who got blown out by Cal who won 6 games.  LSU lost twice and never looked as dominating as they were supposed to, except in one blowout where they killed Virginia Tech who won the ACC!

Arizona State got blown out on national TV and still has a good case to make a BCS Bowl.  I wouldn't be surprised if Georgia lost to Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, would you?

by the1austin on Dec 1, 2007 9:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously...

...no to that last.  That said, Georgia looked great against Florida and Auburn and beat Kentucky pretty easily.  Kentucky then took Tennessee to the limit and Tennessee lost to LSU principally by throwing away the game.  On balance I'd say Georgia is better than LSU right now alhtough youre certainly right to say that "clearly" maybe something of an overstatment.

Oh, except that the Horns are eminantely and shittily mediocre.  That, I'm afraid, is quite clear.

marshalld

by duras on Dec 1, 2007 9:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What's going to be interesting

is that the voters are going to know that they have the power to put whomever they want in the title game. This may be an unprecedented dynamic in college football voting.

You suddenly have about 6 teams with an equal claim to the title game. Will voters simply lift #3 and #4? Or will they shuffle the standings substantially this week to get the title game they want?

I'll be very curious to see the final polls tomorrow.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 1, 2007 10:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Because

WVU is likable and interesting. Missouri's a nice story. Tennessee over LSU would have been nice.

Now? We get truly hate-inspiring Ohio State in the title game. BlowU about to win the Big 12. LSU's going to get in the BCS Title game after two losses.

This is just a shit show.

On the bright side? Our Rose Bowl party will not be tainted by Ohio trash.

Coaches Poll

Is the poll this weekend the one that is made public?  If so would be very interesting to see how it plays out.

Also going to be interesting how the writers play it out by region.  I can honestly see the South voting for LSU, the West for USC, etc.

Isn't it Rediculous

In the 9 years that Stoops and Mack have been in the Big 12 together, Stoops has 5 CCs out of 6 appearances, 6 BCS bowls, and 1 MNC.  Mack has 1 CC out of 3 appearances, 2 BCS bowls, and 1 MNC.

Vinceless Mack: 0 conference championships out of 2 appearances, 0 BCS games, and 0 MNCs.

That makes me physically ill. I don't expect to win an MNC every year, but I think we should be beating OU at least half the time, and a&m at least 2/3 of the time.

This is why we must get rid of conf. games!

The SEC conference game will probably catapult LSU into the title game, despite losing a horrible game to unranked Arkansas at home.

Georgia doesn't make the title game as a result of this extra game they were unable to make. They were unable to make the game because of these stupid east/west divisions. Get rid of them too!

The Big XII championship game knocks the one Big XII team out of the MNC game. GOD DAMN IT!

Herbstreit just got it wrong

The Rose Bowl would get the first replacement pick if Ohio State is #1 but the Rose is also barred from picking an at-large team from the same conference as the #2 team.

USC vs. Georgia is not possible if LSU plays for the national title.

That is how I've read the rules.

Rule
  1. If a bowl loses a host team to the NCG, then such bowl shall select a replacement team from among the automatic-qualifying teams and the at-large teams before any other selections are made. If two bowls lose host teams to the NCG, each bowl will get a replacement pick before any other selections are made. In such case, the bowl losing the No. 1 team gets the first replacement pick, and the bowl losing the No. 2 team gets the second replacement pick. If the Rose Bowl loses both the Big Ten and Pac-10 champions to the NCG, it will receive two replacement picks. A bowl choosing a replacement team may not select any of the following:

 A. A team in the NCG;
 B. The host team for another BCS Bowl;
 C. When two bowls lose host teams, then the bowl losing the number one team may not select a replacement team from the same Conference as the number two team, unless the bowl losing the number two team consents.

This is what I get...

...for helping my girlfriend with her photo project.  I leave, and BC is beating Va Tech.  I come back, Va Tech has beaten BC (I know you all hate them, but I like BC, damnit!), LSU won despite being brutally manhandled for much of the game, WVU (who was supposed to embarrass tOSU in the NC game) plays like Texas against the Aggies and squanders their shot, Mizzou lets OU win the XII, and Herbstreit is letting OU and tOSU give him double anal.

Fuck.

I feel really weird right now... I was looking for a Missouri win and a W. Virginia win.

Now this this season that made no sense really makes no sense.  I bet Hawaii gets drop kicked too... the Huskies just went in on them in the first four minutes of the game.

May we should all just check this season off to a Voodoo curse or something.  I will tell you after watching OU tonight, I am more proud of the game we played against them.  Texas could have won that one, and should not have lost the other two... don't get me started.  Oh man I have a headache :-0 !!

Thoughts from the Big 12 title game

I was really impressed by one really neat call by Mizzou.  How many years do you think we will have to wait to see Mack and Greg call something like a double reverse pass?  Absolutely froze the defense.  The land thieves may have won, but that was some ballsy call by Pinkel.

Now that LSU seems to have tied up Les Miles, can we pray that Bob Stoops will go to Michigan?  Or should we just assume that whoever would replace him at OU would also be Mack's daddy?

by Longhorn in Canada on Dec 1, 2007 11:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Double reverse pass...

... with Cosby throwing was actually probably the only trick play we ran in 2006.  Ran the thing several times, too.  Once I remember against KSU, which Sweed dropped a sure TD on.

The problem is we didn't run a double reverse.  Ever.

Actually I think it's their curse.

The great kahuna came up with it. Washington's 21 is just a teaser. Hawaii will win and claim the only undefeated team status and can make a case for being in the NC. Of course, no one will take them seriously.

Hawaii will sue - and win. Gets an injunction against BCS, which has to put them in the game. BCS capitulates. Then there is a very serious conversation about who is #2.

2007 season

I decided about halfway through the season that I would embrace the craziness of it all, since it was kind of cool to have no idea how it would turn out at that point.  I knew it would make it more exciting going down the stretch, more meaningful games, etc...

Here we are, less than 24 hours before the BCS selection show, and we're still in the dark as to who will play for the MNC (although there are some good guesses).

It's unbelievable!

I think so

they finish with two losses, and I don't think any other BigEast teams finished with fewer than two. They did themselves a favor by losing to the bad teams (USF and Pitt) because they now own the tie-breaker over the good teams (Cincinnati and Uconn).

if LSU is in the national title game

they need to blow the whgole system up and start over.

Some people are already espousing Miles' "We were the best team in the nation for 60 minutes" b/c both of their losses were in overtime. Does overtime now not count in the win/loss column?
If they are "the best team in the nation for 60 minutes", why was Kentucky and an unranked Arkansas able to tie them, and force overtime?
Arkansas beat LSU AT HOME on SENIOR DAY. How Can LSU justify that?
