My Playoff Dream..
I know a lot of people think this will never happen. But this is a playoff scenario that I thought of just recently
Regardless of whether it will be implemented or not. Any feedback would be appreciated
The satisfaction of having a clear-cut champion at the end of the playoff will outweigh the controversy of a team being left out of it IMO.
The 6 BCS conference champs should be automatics (if you can't win your conference you shouldn't go any further)...and then for the 2 at-large selections we have 2 "play-in" games for 4 highly ranked, non-bcs teams. The winners of those 2 games get the 2 remaining slots in the playoff.
I think i covered everything;:
- rewarded for winnign conference, punished for not
- enough opportunity for non-bcs conference teams.

I'll play along with this
ex:
Illinois at Kansas
Hawaii at Georgia
Illii/Kansas winner plays at Ohio State
Hawaii/UGA winner plays at LSU
WVU at Oklahoma
USC at Va Tech
USC/VA Tech winner at Ohio State
WVU/OU winner at LSU
Winners meet in New Orleans for the national title

not bad
I'm not sure about the 4 non-BCS schools though... for example, who would it be this year? Hawaii, Boise St, um.... BYU? Tulsa?
Whereas you'd be overlooking a lot of better teams, although I kind of agree with your point about winning the conference. I still think there's a better compromise (maybe 2 non-BCS and 2 BCS-conf schools in the play-in games).

understood ...
However many teams, I wouldn't waste the current bowl system on playoff. Bowls were established to reward teams for good years. That way your UCLAs and Florida tates can still make bowls along with Memphises and Navys ...
That said, many say "Other divisions have playoffs." Yea, and they always play at one of the team's home stadium. Apply the same to D-I
Also, you get a first-round bye (no play-in game) if you had to win a conference championship game
