A Texas-Arizona State Holiday

Bumped from the diaries. As expected, we're headed to San Diego. DMN confirmation, as well. Honestly, a good matchup for Texas, despite our disappointment in the end of the year.  --PB--

Austin American Statesman is reporting that Texas is headed to the Holiday Bowl to face Arizona State:

"Texas has accepted an invitation to the Holiday Bowl, where it will face Arizona State.

The bowl game was once the Longhorns’ home away from home, but this will mark their first appearance in San Diego since 2003.

The game will be played Dec. 27."

Fantastic.
This is as good an outcome as we could have expected.  We get to measure ourselves against a tema that gave Oregon (with healthy Dixon) a good game at Autzen and were beaten pretty soundly by USC.  Thus we'll have an important benchmark in trying to determine how good we are.  I hope the coaches, like, you know, consider a game plan or something.

Illinois

The only way Arizona State doesn't make a BCS bowl is if both Illinois and Kansas are picked ahead of them.

So, if true, then

OSU vs. LSU

Rose: USC vs. Illinois
Fiesta: Kansas vs. OU
Sugar: Georgia vs. Hawaii
Orange: West Va vs. Virginia Tech

The only way this isn't true is if the Orange Bowl picked Kansas over West Va. Not likely.

Orange didn't want WVU

Afraid fans wouldn't come to Miami after being just four quarters from the title game.

Hey there Horns!

Sun Devil fan here, just wanted to say hey and I'm looking forward to playing you guys in San Diego.  I've actually got 3 really close friends who graduated from UT and I've made several trips to Austin, so Texas is one of my favorite other schools -- I've even got a Texas shot glass next to my ASU sign at my desk at work -- guess which one will be finding a temporary new home for the next month! ;)

I'm looking forward to the game, I think it'll be a good matchup and a good time.  Hope to check in here plenty of times over the next few weeks and become a good resource for the BON community on all things ASU.

GO DEVILS!!!

Should be fun

As lousy as this season was in many ways, this works out well for me personally. Texas to San Diego, where I can attend the game. Texas plays ASU, where my cousin is a senior. Silver linings!

Re:

Just checking in after a long weekend of sports.

So the Pac-10 was actually rooting for the Mizzou-WVU match-up, because the Rose was taking a Big 10 team, records be damned? Ah well, the Pac-10 had their chance with the Washington-Hawaii game, but looks like ol' Ty couldn't put one out for the boys on the West Coast.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with the comments that Kansas-OU is a terrible match-up to watch as a Texas fan, and a surefire OU blowout (of course, we thought that last year too).

On the other hand, I think we get killed by ASU (but again, stranger things have happened). I was rooting for Oregon State, a good team peaking at the right time, rather than ASU, a better team that just suffered a couple tough defeats. Oh well.

Vince looked good today (so did Mario, surprisingly). Michael Griffin got his first NFL TD. The Texans stink.

Looking forward to the UCLA game. Happy viewing.

By the way, the Mack Brown quote from the ESPN Holiday Bowl article.

"We're looking forward to getting out to San Diego and preparing for another great Pacific Life Holiday Bowl."

Sigh.

My adopted kid is pure genius at the Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model.

Texans

The Texans stink.

They are becoming the NFL version of UT - all that talent and no enthusiasm!

ya

this is definitely the best game we could have gotten in the holiday bowl

this is bull

Illinois gets into the rose bowl?! are you kidding me!

by Hook'em13 on Dec 2, 2007 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Rose Bowl

In their defense, their other choices were Kansas, West Virginia, Mizzou, and Arizona State.  No one wants to see a ASU/USC rematch, and the other three teams all lost their last game and aren't ranked that high anymore.

by Texas Wahoo on Dec 2, 2007 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

Georgia

With tOSU as the #1 team, the Rose Bowl had the first choice and thus Georgia was still available

by R00T4UT on Dec 2, 2007 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

Wrong

Georgia was not an option for the Rose. The Rose was picking their replacement for Ohio State. By rule, they are not allowed to pick a team from the same conference as the #2 team in the BCS.

This is in place to prevent bowls from not having a team from the conference they are affliated with.

Basically, the Sugar Bowl was not going to be without an SEC team, unless they agreed to pass on the Dawgs.

Arizona State

I bet the Arizona State fans and the rest of the PAC-10 supporters are just livid over the Rose Bowl selecting the Illini and effectively cutting the PAC-10 out of a hefty BCS Bowl payout.  It probably oost the PAC-10 at least $15M cold hard cash.

know what

looking at the choices.... if Texas had beat A&M we could have been in the rose bowl or against V Tech in the orange bowl.

anything would've been better than losing to the

Hey, PB

Be sure to come see the San Diego Texas Exes when you're out here.  I know I'll be tailgaiting all afternoon and be there to cheer on our Horns.

Win-Win!

Texas wins, and we get the performance we all knew we were capable of putting out.  We beat a team that should have destroyed us, we have some semblance of positive momentum for next year.

Texas loses, Mack cannot ignore his coaching staff, and is forced to do something... anything!  We don't get our precious 10 wins, and the backlash causes a big enough stink to have a chance at triggering a change in Mack Brown.

I'll be rooting for our guys, though, because Texas should never be embarrassed like we have been this season.  Plus, Rudy Carpenter holds on to the ball so damned long, even we should get some sacks.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Dec 2, 2007 10:41 PM CST reply actions

No

ASU is not a team that should blow us out. If Texas gets blown out its because we will have done it to ourselves. remember, even a mediocre team (Illinois) can look good because this is such a crappy year in football.

by Hook'em13 on Dec 2, 2007 10:45 PM CST reply actions

If we play...

... the defense that gave up 362 yards to Stephen "noodle-arms" McGee, we will be completely destroyed.  These guys will score on every possession unless an actual biblical miracle occurs.  Our best shot is to hope GD lets Colt run the damned football, and we outscore the Sun Devils somewhere around 63-56.

That's exaggerating, but seriously, Jamaal will win the game if Colt can keep the chains moving in between 50 yard TD runs.  Please don't let GD come out with that festering turd of a gameplan he had against A&M.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Dec 2, 2007 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

Based on this season

Texas should be blown out by ASU if the team plays like they have all season.

However, Texas should never play like they did the season

And as bad as McGee is, he is several steps above Colt in toughness, strength, intensity, and yes, throwing ability.

Key to victory against ASU:  keep the ball OUT of Colt's hands, and IN JC's.

by Texas Our Texas on Dec 3, 2007 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

Colt can run the ball.

Get over it.  He can run.

What he cannot do is start the offense with his arm.  GD let him run some against everyone after OU, then decided that he needed to stay in the pocket against A&M, because I'm sure he thought he'd get hurt.  Result:  blech, until the game is basically over, at which point they let Colt run, and he smashes two Aggies' brains against each other.

Colt is a coach's kid, and he listens too much.  GD tells him to stay in the pocket and play with his arm, and Colt will not cross the line of scrimmage unless he is tackled from behind and thrown that way.  The problem is he's had authority beaten into him since he was born, and will probably never say "F this" and run the ball like Vince would.  They've got to tell him to run, and I don't think the coaches are smart enough to figure this out.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Dec 4, 2007 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

No, he can't

Even if he can run, which he really can't do very well, but even if we agree that he can run, that does NOT qualify him to lead the Longhorns.  Period.  Besides, if the ability to run is your measurement of a QB, you should be praying for Chiles. And even tenuously comparing Colt to Vince is silly.  They both have arms and legs, and that is where the similarities end.  Colt has failed spectacularly this year, but like I've said before, I don't blame him.  I blame the coaches for keeping him in the game when better options are on the bench.  Face it, Colt will NEVER lead this team to a Big 12 or MNC.  He just doesn't have the ability.  If you like trips to San Diego, then I suppose Colt is your guy.

You go on the list...

... of people that get your comments copy-pasted on game day threads when Colt wins us a game behind a decent offensive line.

That is all.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Dec 5, 2007 1:55 AM CST up reply actions

I'll be holding my breath

Besides, its not like I want Colt to fail.  I want UT to win, and thus I want Colt to do well.  The problem is he just can't.  One or two 10 yard scrambles a game doesn't constitute a game changing, or game winning, player, especially if he has been handicaping the team up to that point (which Colt usually does).  I admire your confidence, but every game this season has shown that it is woefully misplaced.

by Texas Our Texas on Dec 5, 2007 10:57 AM CST up reply actions

i think

that Texas might have a slight advantage over ASU because ASU is going to be doing what Texas was doing in 2003 which is crying cause they didn't get into the BCS.
Besides if Texas comes and plays good football (granted they have only played good football once this year against rice) then they have the athletes to keep up with ASU, even though this is a down year in our talent pool.

Dennis Erickson.....

...., owner of 2 NC rings, orchestrated the Cotton Bowl 46-3 whippin' of our 1990 Longhorns. I know from the Kansas State game that Mack doesn't believe in "revenge games" and it really inspired the squad. Maybe he should go ahead build up the revenge factor!

--- All roads to the Big-XII Championships run through OU and the RRS. It's not just "another game." ---
