Observations from big win vs UCLA
Going into this game, I was worried that we could get blown out. Playing at UCLA, combined with the fact that we seem to struggle in early season games against traditional powers left me with little to no expectations. I also have been a bit worried about who, besides DJ, was going to pick up the slack after losing Durant. After watching the game tonight, I have a renewed level of excitement about this year's team.
A couple things really stuck out to me.
Damion James - Wow. He looks like a completely different player than he was last year. Last season, I cringed every time he had the ball further than 5 feet from the rack. Tonight, not only did he knock down mid-range jumpers, but he seemed more comfortable in the open court, and just more confident over all. We knew the tenacity, quickness, and rebounding would be there, but his obvious improvement is the most exciting thing I saw all night.
Conner Atchley - What a big 3 pointer! Sometimes it's easy to pick on Conner, but he is playing better than ever, and he also seems more confident (although, he could still improve in that area). With such an undersized team, it is nice to have a big man who can hit an open jumper. Also, did you see him take Kevin Love off the dribble at the start of the game and hit that nice running scoop? (the air ball sky hook was another story though...maybe it was a "tribute" to Lew Alcinder, since it was Conner's first game at Pauley Pavilion)
Justin Mason - This guy might be my favorite player on the team. The announcers were calling him the "glue" of our team and I couldn't agree more. He was good at taking a slower defender off the dribble and he just doesn't seem to make mistakes. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why he is the glue of the team, but if you watch the games, it's hard not to see how important his play is.
I know it's early, and it's just one game, but winning on the road against a team that has been to two straight Final Four's is a great early season accomplishment. Combine the big win with the fact that our role players seem to be showing big improvements over last season, and this should make for an exciting year.

The G-Unit
Haha, that segment during the game cracked me up. DJ - the General. AJ - the Gunner. J-Mace - the Glue. I agree! Mason does the little things, Rebounds well for a guard, takes the charges, takes it strong to the hoop, just does a lot of the little things that a baskeball team needs. Sometimes there is a player who exemplifies the heart and grittiness of a basketball team. The will of the team. Mace and Damion James are that for our team.
Thoughts on the game-
-Connor still has trouble blocking out and he goes for way too many fakes and leaves his feet too easily. Obviously, being a good shot blocker takes a lot of natural timing, but one of the most important facets is not leaving your feet until the shooter commits. Watch Greg Oden when he comes back. I don't think I have ever seen him go for a pump fake. Incredible. But the confidence for Connor. I loved the look on his face after he hit that big three. Ice cold. Then throwing up the horns to the fans after the game and jawing with them! Awesome. He would have hesitated on that one earlier in his career and missed. We need him on the pick and pop because UCLA and other teams will show hard on the pick to stop DJ's penetration.
Damion James. Wow. The j is so much better this year. Great elevation, although I think he is still better from 1015 feet than he is past that. Not a lot of arc. I would like to see him use the pump fake more to get into the lane with his face-up game within his shooting range. I think having someone to cut off of in the high post would be a good addition to our offense as well.
AJ. We need to find other ways to get him the ball than just to run him off of screens on the baseline and at the free throw line. It's just too easy for good defenders (like we saw tonight) to keep him from getting touches. And that is the important aspect. Touches. Right now, other teams can deny him the ball and he can't get open looks or penetrate most of the time. Most good teams will take away the open looks from three, so we have to take advantage of the hard close outs that AJ's quick release necessitates. Get him touches and the drives to the basket will open up his improved midrange game. Also, AJ was a solid playmaker in 2005, but his offensive game the last two years has dissolved into always looking for his own shot.
Increasing his ballhandling could take some pressure off of DJ and get some easier shots for other players.
JMace. His quickness and decision making are much improved. He seems more comfortable shooting from the perimeter, even though he will never be a pure shooter. I love everything that he brings to the team. Ben Howland mentioned in an article that Texas might have the best backcourt in the country. The intangibles that J-Mace brings to the table really help our team.
Outlook-
We stlll have trouble rebounding the ball. Connor needs to be more physical and we have to work hard on blocking out in the zone. Players really need to focus on sliding in front of defenders by using the swim technique popular with defensive ends in football. Effort, effort, effort. We also have to learn how to initiate the offense in the half court without totally relying on penetration from DJ. Having that as our only offense cost us a chance at the national championship in 2003. I like that we are starting to establish some identity as a defensive team for the first time in three years. That was a hallmark of Rick Barnes' teams for a long time, but inexperience and injuries kept our teams from really pressuring our opponents. However, our defensive prowess will be mitigated by our need to play zone defenses, which also hurts our ability to defend the three, which most likely will not be good this year. At all. Even though the zone looks pretty good at times, we still have trouble forcing turnovers out of it and getting rebounds, both of which lead directly to our transition game, which is the strength of this time. With all that said, I'm really happy with where out team is at right now. We are better right now than we have been early in recent years and that is a great sign. Awesome win. Go 'Horns!

Oops
Sorry about the closed out lines. Don't know how that happens.

Probably...
You're probably using hyphens. If you put hyphens around a phrase, it strikes through it. Mack Brown will fix everything, I have total confidence. See?

Re:
Haha, excellent example there, HB.
It's nice to see actual development in talent for a change, huh? So thanks for that, Rick Barnes, you've renewed faith that recruiting stars CAN turn out to be productive players.

Damion James..
has got to be my favorite. That guy is one of the most fluid and athletic players we've seen at Texas. And now that he's got his mid-range jumper going, he's going to be uber-valuable not just in transition but in our overall game-plan.

agreed
James brings this team to the next level. Now that he's nailed down that midrange jumper, defenses have to pick there poison. We should get used to this: DJ penetrates and defenders collapse, kick out to AJ draws a quick double team, then a dump off pass past the double to James to nail a 15 footer.

What a Resume
Wow, what a resume Texas has going here. Hopefully UCLA and Tennessee finish in the top 10. We also have a big game in a month or so against a good Michigan State team.
I wonder how good we would be with gary and Kevin Durant. Scary.

Game against MSU
I'm exited about the road game against MSU too. Izzo is a great coach, and his teams always play very tough, hard-nosed bball. I'm curious to see how our small, but incredibly quick, squad matches up against a grind it out Big 10 team on the road.

James
said he took thousands and thousands of jump shots in the off-season. He's clearly working on expanding his game. Who knows? Maybe he'll start canning some threes soon.

Connor Atchley played
his best b-ball in the 1st half by taking Love to the rim. Barnes deserves credit for seeing the opportunity to make Love move his feet.
Great mismatch in athleticism.
My only nitpick of the game is that Connor did not do more of that. Hopefully as Connor develops he will see those openings on his own.

huge win...!
I agree with all the points made 'bout specific players and will only add one general thing. This team played from start to finish like it was their game to win and had zero intimidation/nerves about it. I think last year this young team tended to fall back on a sort of 'let KD take the game on his shoulders' kinda thing, but not this year.
They all looked awesome and it was so much fun seeing them have fun. btw, how about some big ups to Coach Barnes for keeping this team fully stocked AND motivated [hint hint to a certain football coach, you need BOTH to consistently win big games]
p.s. The Aggie loss before was not just icing on the cake it was like a whole second frosted cake for free! The famers I know have been such jerks about their resurgent team (mostly because it was the only time they were beating us) and they got exposed as over-rated big time yesterday.

Aggies
I was entirely unimpressed with what I saw of the Aggies yesterday. I think the lack of point guard play will really hurt them. I didn't see a lot of DeAndre Jordan, but he doesn't seem like a big-time impact player right now. I thought that Josh Carter would take another step in his development this year and become one of their go-to scorers and a top wing in the Big 12. Not sure if that will happen either. After watching both games yesterday, count me as no longer scared of the Aggies.

Thank you Texas Basketball Team!
Although football is my sport of choice, it sure is nice to see such a strong start by our basketball program. Maybe Rick Barnes could sub in as an Interim Offensive Coordinator for our upcoming bowl game against Arizona St. ????
Give that Barnes guy a raise, and take it right out of Mack's paycheck.
