A Hypothetical Question...
I know this is far-fetched, so don't give me the standard "never happen" response. I want you to think about this...
What if Mack Brown were forced to retire tomorrow, for any reason you can imagine, and Bob Stoops took over as HC at UT?
I would personally do back flips.

what?!
I'll assassinate Stoops! That's something I can not handle.

You know it's a winner

Fair question
I think this is a fair question and one that I personally would like to see debated to some extent. Put the personal feelings for Crybaby Stoops aside and simply ask yourself, what would the last 10 years have been like at Texas had Stoops been here instead of Mack. My personal opinion is that Texas would have at least two - three additional conference championships and one additional national championship. I hate Stoops with a passion, but he's a hell of a coach and I would have liked to see what he could have accomplished with all of the talent that passed through Austin over the past decade. I would like to think I could put my personal disdain for Stoopsy aside in exchange for several additional championships - does that mean I am selling my soul?

In addition to those conference championships
I agree with PB. He is a very good coach, but I do not want him anywhere near Austin.

I'm not saying
I want him at Texas. I am simply looking for other people's opinions of what he might have accomplished at Texas over the past decade with the talent that has come through. Assume, as hard as it is, that he came to Austin instead of Mack, runs a clean program and is given the same deck of cards Mack Brown has been given - what does he do with them? My point is not that Stoopsy should replace Mack, but that Mack needs to have a little bit of the fire in his belly that Stoops seems to have.

yes
I agree, someone needs to light that fire & get him going or we are looking at more Holiday Bowl games in our future.

He's better than what we've got
and the great DKR came from Oklahoma too. Pie in the sky dreams for sure, but if the planets aligned, pigs all the sudden were flying, and hell becomes the new winter vacation spot, then I'd be on board 100%.

Stoops is a terrific coach
And I want no piece of him.

Just because he is a great coach...
Doesn't mean he would be a good fit for Texas. Personally, I think he is a win-at-all-costs kind of coach with questionable ethics and I would not want him at Texas, even if he is a better coach than Mack Brown. Look, we can always look around and say that so-and-so is a better coach, but we have what we have.
In my humble opinion, Tressel is just as good a coach, if not better, and has much more integrity.

I was with you
until you said Tressel. The man is the teflon don of college football.
And Stoops is dirty as well, I mentioned this the last time some one asked this, but I will say it again, Stoops would not work at UT because we don't have the experience hiding the cheating that OU does.

You have to admit, we have a lot of car dealerships in town.

Amen, Wells.
Tressel? Ethical? Integrity? Is there another Tressel that I don't know about?
by Brandon 97 on Dec 4, 2007 1:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Youngstown State
Didn't Tressel run into some issues with the NCAA while at Youngstown State?
by Screw O.U. on Dec 4, 2007 12:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
more integrity?
You obviously didn't follow the Maurice Clarett case much, or the fact that their QB was in trouble for the very same sort of thing that the OU QB was kicked off the team for.
The difference being at tOSU, when you are a starting QB caught taking money from boosters you're given a two game suspension [which turns into a 1 game and 1 quarter suspension when UT scores and takes an early lead on the Buckeyes at home...]

Tressel
I agree with the Tressel comment. He seems to have poise, confidence, and integrity. Great coach but his style is so slow and boring. But with the right atheletes maybe he would open it up more.
No way, no how do I want that butthole Stoops at UT. His brother Mike, at Arizona, is just as much of a butthole.
The Stoops boys played college ball for the Hawkeyes and they (Hawks fans) were mad Stoops chose OU before Iowa could ever contact him. From what I gather, the Hawks are much happier with Ferentz and do not want Stoops - should the opportunity ever arise.

Tressel
I am a whole-hearted Mack Brown supporter and, as of right now, do not wish him off of the 40-Acres any time soon. If the extreme off-the-field problems continue, and we continue to hand Oklahoma Big XII titles, that opinion could change. But, like I said, I am a proud member of the Mack Pack.
That said, wouldn't it be amazing to see Tressel in an orange sweater-vest?
by Bdub on Dec 4, 2007 12:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Sure. In Aug-Sept he'll pass smooth out
by the end of the first quarter.
Style only goes so far in a blast furnace.
Now something in a tank top could really scare the opposition.

So, would he be stealing players from Oklahoma?
by whills on Dec 4, 2007 12:56 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
What Players?
There's a reason he steals from Texas.

Osborne vs. Switzer
Just think what Osborne had to go through in the 80s - he was putting up his usual 9-10 win seasons with Integrity, but it was Switzer who was running the renegade program (don't think Stoops is as bad in this regard) and winning the MNCs.
Seems like a repeat here to some degree. Can you imagine though the scrutiny Osborne would have gotten had he been doing the same thing just 20 years later?
But at the end of the day, it all worked out for Obsborne & the program in the 90s, and he will certainly be more fondly remembered than Switzer historically.
Mack could be on the same track.

Osborne well remembered?
Are you ocn crack?
Lawrence Phillips dragging a girl down the stairs by her hair ring a bell?
Serial rapist Christian Peters ring a bell?
The drunken Vedral brothers ring a bell?
Nebraska became THE renegade program of college football in the '90s.
by Beergut on Dec 5, 2007 5:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not on Crack...
Outside of Blogger Nation, yes, I think Osborne is well remembered.
I think those issues that you mention seemed to stick to the players themselves and not the Program, as opposed to what happened at OU. The perception was, mostly by virtue of his personality, that it was Switzer who was allowing it to happen.
Take all of the off the field stuff that happened in Austin this year, and I'm willing to bet that it won't be the first thing that people think of when it comes to Mack Brown in 10 years.
by LeftHandedTexan on Dec 5, 2007 9:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You're right...
Osborne was so vilified and damaged by all of the problems at NU that he was never able to show his face again...
Until he was elected to Congress in Nebraska, followed by getting the AD job.

No Way
Not a chance! Stoops wouldn't take it and the Alums wouldn't stand for it.
