02-03 Horns vs. 07-08 Horns (basketball)
PB noted this in a thread, but this is the best a UT basketball team has played since TJ Ford's sophomore year. Will this year's team go farther? Well, we have to grow a lot first, and we shouldn't act like wins against UCLA and Tennessee mean we'll definitely get there. However, no one can argue that this team doesn't have the same caliber of potential as that team.
My two cents, the edge in each important category for final four teams:
Ability to slow down other team's runs: so far, 02-03
Rebounding: 02-03
Depth: 02-03
Scoring: 07-08
Defense: ?
Point Guard: Wash? (I'm happy to say that)
Outside Shooting: 07-08 (barely)
Star Power: 07-08 (AJ qualifies as a second star because defenses have to adjust to play him)
Rebounding: 02-03
Free-throw shooting: 07-08
Athleticism: wash
Clutch time: ?
Hair gel: 02-03

Of course it's really too early for this but...
Is rebounding there twice for emphasis or was it a mistake?
Anyways, the similarities are pretty strong. Both teams are guard-oriented. Boddicker and Atchley are similar and probably a wash at this point (Atchley rebounds and blocks better, Boddicker passed better and scored more). DJ and TJ seem to be a wash. TJ was quicker to the rim but DJ can shoot from outside. Ivey was better than Mason currently is, Mouton vs. AJ is interesting. James Thomas was an absolute beast inside and this team doesn't have anyone who can do what he did unless Johnson steps in and is as good as advertised.
Overall, I'd say that the 02-03 team was deeper and better because of their strength inside but this team could improve to a level beyond that of the 02-03 team if they get better inside and defend the 3 better. This team can shoot better than the 02-03 team.
Oops, also Damion James brings a lot that the 02-03 team didn't have. I say this, if Johnson comes in and plays well enough that Texas can use a bigger lineup with James at the 3 and rest the guards than this team can be better.

Thats what happens...
When a well cared for, and carefully coiffed mane gets dragged down by harsh, heavy Euro-water, and when you are forced to use conditioner and styling products not carefully tested first on lab animals.
A moment of silence please, for though one of the greatest players to ever don burnt orange remains, his hair may never be the same.
To me it goes something like this for Texas' best sports products, keeping it to my era only:
- Vince Young
- Roy Williams
- Boddicker's Hair
- TJ Ford
- Kevin Durant
5a. Brian Boddicker
- Huston Street
Yeah, that looks about right.
Be strong Brian, we are behind you.

boddicker
it figures he would end up in a foreign league. Big white guy who shoots 3s.

He Sure Could Help Out The Rockettes
Their 3 point shooting has been non-existent most of the season so far (thanks bonzi). Wonder who has his NBA rights.
Did I hear correctly?
Did someone mention The Pride of Schenectady?
"My coaches think I can be one of the best players in the nation if I'd improve my offense. That's cool, but really all I care about is rebounding."
whoa there folks
It's cool to think about these two awesome teams, and I am as excited about anybody about this year's team, but let's not forget how awesome the 02-03 team really was.
One thing the 02-03 had was much more experience. I like this team, but I don't think we are quite there yet.
First, DJ is great, but TJ was special, this one is close, but I'll take the Naismith award winner.
Ivey was underrated and Justin Mason would love it if he could have a career like Royal's.
AJ is a better shooter than Mouton, but Brandon was a big guard that brought a lot of other stuff to the table and could light it up himself, so I'll call that one a wash.
Where the 02-03 team has a major edge was down low. Boddicker, Thomas, and Buckman would all be the best post player on this year's team, sorry Conner.
The 02-03 squad didn't really have anyone as athletic as Damion James, so that's the one thing this year's team would have going for it. That said, at this point, I can comfortably say, without a bit of pessimism, that the comparison isn't really that close.
That team was special, and I really hope this year's squad can compare when it is all said and done, but we've played less than 10 games, so at this point it's not even close.
Check these facts out if you want some nostalgia about that team.
by the way
I love the hair gel tag. Don't forget, Klotz was on that team too. That's a lot of hair gel.
Did either of them punch opposing players?
I know the dirtiest play I've ever seen by a UT basketball player was Klotz's sucker punch. I think that might've been against Memphis, and he was suspended for a game after that.
Also, one time TJ Ford tried to save the ball and went into the stands against OSU, and unintentionally ran into a pregnant woman who's husband proceeded to put TJ in a headlock. James Thomas ran into the stands throwing punches after that.
I remember this
We always joked that nobody would mess with TJ as long as his bodyguard JT was around.
I'd Take Sonny Alvarado Over Any Of Them
Not to dis JT, but Sonny was rocking the prison tats and was fearless.
I think Moutown and Ivey are clean
Didn't Gabe Mouneke do some punching once.
Seeing James Thomas with lips flapping coming after you has got to be a scary thing. Little head big body.
Good Times
Those were some heady days. I really, really like this team, but they really don't have the depth that team had.
Does Hank Dudek have a college-age son yet? HE'S GOT 5 TO GIVE!
