Brewster wants Texas

New Minnesota head coach and form Horns assistant Tim Brewster wants to schedule Texas.  I sure hope he's let Mack & co. know.  Maybe they can sneak on a future schedule in place of Arkie State.

Recruiting
I hear that rationale all the time about how coaches want to schedule games with Texas teams or somehow schedule games to be played in the state of Texas to make inroads in recruiting...well, I need one of you recruiting gurus to tell me why that's significant.

Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, recruits weren't exposed to man teams beyond their state, but in this day and age of the internet making our world smaller by the second, does it really matter to a high school kid in Texas if Minnesota plays down here or not. I guess you could argue that if Minnesota has UT scheduled in the future, the could make the argument to young kid that if becomes a Gopher, he'd get to play against UT in front of his family. But if the kid wanted to play in front of his family so bad, he'd probably pick a Texas school even if it wasn't UT.

Conversely, I hear people say Texas schedules beauty contests against Rice and Miss Conference USA Cougar High because it helps with recruiting Houston-area athletes. Really? Did VY pick UT because we kicked the shit out of the Owls? Honestly, I think we schedule games in Houston as a way to curry favor with the UT Alumni who live there, but people still insist it's a huge recruiting perk.

Obviously, I'm missing some integral facet of recruiting...somebody please enlighten me.

I agree
play the BCS schools, line'em up and stack'em ten high.

If anything it gives Texas the same "quality win" teams like Mich and OSU hang their hat on each year.

He and Mack are buds from way back
... and Mack is trying to land his son.

I doubt that's enough to get the Gophers on the Texas schedule anytime soon.  Have we ever had a recruit from Minnesota?  Or from anywhere in the Upper Midwest for that matter?

Has anyone actually BEEN to
Minn/St.Paul in the fall or winter.

I live in Chicago -- and when I visit my cousin there I can't wait to get home from the North Pole. It is completely bleak and miserable there. Aside from the river, which I'm sure is lovely for at least 2-3 days in the summer, it has very little to offer a born and bread Texas kid.
Nice city, fun city, bad weather, high suicide rate and the wiminz are non-existent.

I think Texas has something to benefit from this. Mack's program continues to get exposure in BIG 10 land, which I think is good. IMO, the BIG 12 suffers from small market school syndrome and could use a bigger boost in profile. Play as many BCS schools as possible.

It's cold there
I don't think we'd agree to a game in Minneapolis unless it was in early September.  Would the Gophers want to schedule what would almost surely be a day game here in September?  That seems to be our biggest challenge in scheduling Big Televen schools.

I've never been to Minneapolis in the winter, but I did live in Madison, WI, for two winters.  We would go to Chicago to try and warm up.  It's insanely cold.

Minnesota has a dome
In fact, I think they play in the Metrodome instead of on campus.  Weather's not an issue.

It is only an issue
for recruits.

It's already a tough sell for midwestern kids, much less, if Brewster thinks he's gonna open a Texas pipeline.
Not gonna happen.

Scheduling
We don't seem to schedule non-conference games after we have started playing the conference schedule, SHSU being the strange exception.

Minnesota is building an on campus, open air facility which is one of the reasons that they fired Mason and hired Brewster.

Texas played Minnesota once
in 1936 and we lost 19-47. So they currently have a 100% winning record against us. We need to do something about that to swing it back in our favor.

Minnesota recruiting
Jim Bertelsen was from Hudson, a town right on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, that is the only upper midwest recruit I can recall (Jam Jones was from Ohio, not really the upper midwest).  So we have had one upper midwest recruit in the last 40 years.

Trust me, Texas has no need to recruit Minnesota.  There is probably more high school football talent within 25 miles of UT's campus than there is in the whole state of Minnesota.

As far as Minnesota recruiting Texas, good luck with that.  They better have recruits take official visits in October so they don't encounter this -5 degree weather of January or February.  No Texas boy in his right mind would willingly come up here unless he was really desperate (or married to a Minnesota girl).

I want Racine
We need to schedule Wisconsin to try and get some of that Racine talent.  They always have good linemen and running backs.  It would also be interesting to see my alma maters collide.

So where were you in August...
... when Texas and Wisconsin collided in volleyball?  And then again in December?  :-)

Obviously
You don't read posts well. It's obvious that no one on this site cares about woman's sports...

Ha how did the VB team end up, PHF? I never saw an end of the season thing in the diary section

Elite Eight
Came up just short against Stanford, and ended up ranked at #8 in the final poll.

First Post
I am a Gopher and a home-and-away with Texas would be my dream, but I am not so disillusioned to think it will happen anytime soon.  I (and most of the state) absolutely despised Glen Mason.  I can't handle the creampuff early season schedules anymore.  All so we can just squeak into some crappy bowl since we can't even finish above .500 in the Big Ten.

So for the most part I am just happy to hear Brewster say that he wishes to schedule a top notch opponent or two.  I wonder do any of you truly think that Brewster's aim is to get more Texas recruits?  Seems a little far-fetched to me, but what do I know?

Glad to join the community.  I am a far greater Longhorns fan than I am a Gopher fan.  It must be nice for you guys to have a state university that cares enough about athletics to at least make intelligent decisions once in a while...

Welcome
And yes, we are EXTREMELY fortunate to be fans of a University that cares so much for its athletic programs.  We seem to forget that sometimes, but it's nice to have someone from a less-supportive institution to remind us of how good we've got it in Austin.
