congrats

i now know how you guys felt after the 3OT loss. although moral victories are lame in football, i truly believe in games like this, there are no losers. i am proud of the way A&M fought through foul trouble on the road and came back from multiple deficits. this game also showed that you guys are capable of winning tournament-type games.

as all of you are, i am really impressed with james' progression. for the longest time i wondered how he was mr. basketball of texas last year but his improvement has been staggering. it reminds me a lot of how josh carter progressed for us last year and i think he will be quite the player for you guys next year.

outstanding games like these really help the perception of the Big XII and hopefully we can have multiple teams go deep in the tourney. i believe that the conference might have the best first-tier teams out of all the conferences.

congrats on the win. i just hope for one more installment of the series, probably in KC but Atlanta would be so much sweeter.

Class move on your part
I do have a couple of questions for you, our resident Aggie liason...
  1. When is the last time Gillispie slept...the guy looks like death warmed over or or a Pixar Racoon character.
  2. Did you feel like the refs called too many fouls on A&M...everytime A&M got called for a foul, the camera automatically turned to Gillispie who had this, "Oh, hail no, you didn't just call that" look on his face. And then he'd just give a shit eating grin like he knew he was getting jobbed because he was playing on the road.
Maybe I'm just projecting, but it started to piss me off after a while and he reminded me of Al Gore at a debate or the winner of the Miss Courvoisier Pageant after she saw some other Hoochie talkin' to her man.

You may want to read this thread
Officiating back and forth.

(Agree, though - nice post, WacDaddy. Classy indeed.)

get rid of subject heading, please
  1. gillispie's workaholic attitude is well known. i read some article about him usually staying up til 2 or 3 in the morning going over game tapes and that he likes to watch about 15 games of the opponent (even though he already has a couple of assistants assigned to this). he is a smart man who realizes that if even if his team is not the most talented, they will be the most prepared. he even admits that his devotion to the game is what led to his divorce.
  2. the foul situation is tough. of course as an fan of a team, i think my team gets its share of bad calls - every person that roots for a team does. but with the intensity with which we play defense, we put the refs in a tough position of what to call and what to allow.
i think the media knows that Gillispie is an emotional guy and uses that to increase the drama effect. however, a lot of the time, the 'death stares' Billy gives are often at his own players, it just might not seem that way since everyone excepts homerism out of a competitor. Billy isn't stupid, he knows what a foul is. He is an excellent basketball mind and if he doesn't believe the call was correct, then so be it. i guess he has higher standards for officials than most.

but unlike other coaches, like Penders who has constantly uses the refs as an excuse or Knight who is constantly in trouble with the league for comments made about the officials, i have never once heard Gillispie address the officials after a game. he knows why he won/lost and what his team could have done to avoid foul trouble. he will be on the refs throughout the game if he feels he isn't getting the calls, but ultimately knows its the play of his team that determines the outcome.

but the talk on saw on here that his persistance is a detriment to the team couldn't be further off. he expects the team to play hard, but play smart as well. i don't think he tells the players that they are perfect and the refs are out to get him. to think that he gets anything less than 100% of out the team is ignorant - the raw talent we have on this team does not compare to anyone around us in the rankings.

i think the officials/foul talk is a no-win situation because it there is no solution or right opinion on the matter. two teams that play opposing styles will never want the game to be called the same. i just hate that the officials can influence the game in a way that no other sport allows - and this is about the only thing i hate about college basketball.

on the foul calls
A&M does a very impressive job at rotating on the perimeter and swarming on the ball in the paint.  they play extremely aggressively and seem to refuse to get beat off the dribble or on a hard move to the bucket.  it seems like a pride thing with them that looks like it's coached and drilled into their fiber as A&M basketball players.  the Texas defenders on the other hand seemed more disciplined to remain vertical in defense, maintain their position, and avoid reach-ins, like it was coached into them to play within themselves on defense and work on distrupting shots without fouling.  the difference in calls reflected the style of defense they were playing.  at times it seemed to me that the Texas defenders weren't challenging shots in the paint nearly as aggressively as the Aggies, and on loose balls just weren't as rabid for possession as the Aggies.  the fouls, the points in the paint, and the rebounds clearly reflected that.  there may have been a few questionable calls, probably both ways, but when KD and DJ would drive the lane, they'd get pounced on by 2-3 defenders and as shifty as both of them are, you can't help but foul if you're going to collapse so hard on the ball like that.

i don't think it's a coincidence that both games turned out with the foul calling appearing so one-sided.  Texas does some of their best work moving towards the basket with KD, DJ, and James, while A&M just refuses to allow easy looks in the paint.  it worked for the Ags in B/CS and it almost worked in Austin.  i can't see how anybody should be complaining.

Any official can influence the game
in any sport.  It may be because basketball is more personal than most other sports, that it looks that way, but I don't think they influence it more that any other sport.

The choice to play the way A&M does leads to the consequence on getting more fouls called, just as the choice to play bump and run in football can lead to more pass interference calls.  How close the reff calls the fouls will change, but that is part of the game and needs to be adapted to, not let allowed to influence the outcome.

I have a question for you!
What is your feeling about the smirk-face Gillispie?  He was totally on my nerve last night.

Acie Law is the
"REAL DEAL". What a damn good game. I watched it at home and lost my voice. If not UT than I'm rooting for aTm in the NCAA's....

classy Aggies
I work(ed) with several Aggies, all of whom are very classy.  I tend to think the Texags, call-in type of asshatAggie is just a vocal minority.

In response to the moral victory thing, I agree that basketball is different than football, maybe because a single game isn't as crucial in basketball.  Either way, this was a great game and I certainly don't want to face A&M in the tourney.
