So I was reading through all my favourite sports sites this morning, waiting for the rest of you BON'ers to wake up and start posting, and came across this little tidbit on espn.com:
'There will be a lot more pressure on Bennett and Georgia Tech's offense -- under the direction of first-year coordinator John Bond -- now that the Yellow Jackets won't have ACC Player of the Year Calvin Johnson around to catch the ball.
Johnson was sensational in 2006 with 76 catches for 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns despite getting more coverage than Britney Spears.
Gailey claims that losing Johnson early to the NFL isn't all bad.
"There was pressure to throw Calvin Johnson the ball almost every snap even though he might be double-covered," Gailey said. "Now, there is the opportunity to spread the ball around to the open receiver. We don't have a dominating guy anymore at that position." '
So is Kevin Durant 2007 equivalent to Calvin Johnson 2006? And ergo, is Texas Basketball 2008 equivalent to Georgia Tech Football 2007?
Bear with me here. I'm not saying that you can make a clean comparison of a foot ball team and a basketball team - it's apples and oranges really. But Ga. Tech lost a dominant athlete who managed to score a lot of points despite being double- and triple-teamed most plays. Assuming KD bolts for the NBA, Texas will too. Ga. Tech also has a solid performer coming back at QB, a guy who did a great job filling in as a freshman once the Reggie Ball Experiment was finally, mercifully brought to an end. Texas has a solid performer back at QB(PG) who did an amazing job running the offense as a freshman this year.
So, is it safe to have hope that losing KD to the NBA isn't all bad? DJ squared (Augustin and James) will have to take the team on their shoulders, AJ will have to find some consistency, Dexter the Molester will have to provide more minutes than he does fouls in the majority of games, and Bad Connor will have to be permanently put to sleep, but could it be that the 2008 team will actually be better than this 2007 team?
