Someone please tell me who this guy is:

I don't follow recruiting THAT closely, so I'm looking to PB or PHF to fill us in on our newest potential Horn.

Nolan Brewster
One of the top safety prospects in the country. His father coached with Mack for a number of years, he grew up with Mack Brown, loves Austin, and so on. Nice pickup for Texas - Brewster was down to Minnesota (where his Dad is now), USC, and Texas, really.

so now what?
With 17 early commits, how many more guys are we going after?  What positions do we need?

I posted this earlier
"There are probably about 4-5 slots left, and Texas has now gotten just about everyone they want in-state (still waiting on WR DeSean Hales, OT Dan Campbell and DE Chancey Aghayere).  The remaining couple of slots could go to OOS targets, including S Nolan Brewster, who was one of the first 2008 athletes to get an offer."

So we got Brewster, I think we will get Hales and Aghayere, it's not clear we will go after another OT so Campbell may be out of luck.  So that means there are at most two wild cards out there that the recruiting sites don't have on their radars, and will likely come from OOS. Brewster and Aghayere are the only "must haves" on the list, but I would imagine that Mack will try to find another stud DB. Otherwise, there are no real positions of need left, IMHO. There are rumors that Mack is recruiting a LB from Utah named Lynn Katoa, but I won't believe it until he signs on the dotted line next February, given our recent issues with OOS recruits (with apologies to Blaine Irby).

I am REALLY excited about Brewster, I think he will be a guy we're all talking about either at S or LB in two years. He will likely be a 5-star prospect on both of the recruiting services. Everyone raves about how smart and athletic he is, and he evidently hits like a Mack truck.

Officially a Limey Longhorn

Re: Katoa
He's a Longhorn if Mack wants him.  Period.  He grew up in Euless, Texas and has always been a Longhorn fan.  He has been quoted recently as saying that if they offer, he will probably commit right away.  He already has offers from OU, Virginia Tech, and others.

As for Brewster, he's good.  He's been mentioned as the best Safety in High School this year.  I haven't seen any video on him yet (I'm not so sure there is any yet), but I'm heard a few people speak of watching him play live and they left quite impressed.  Rest assured - This is a great pick up for Mack.

One need I would love to see filled is at LB.  There's a kid out of Kansas that is awesome!  Arthur Brown.  He'll be a 5* for sure.  The thing is, his younger brother (who plays RB) is considered even better.  That could be the best 2 for 1 deal ever!  I'm hoping to see Mack go after this guy.

Sorry to be so long in this post, but there's a LOT going on right now in recruiting.  Another kid to keep an eye on is Houston product Russell Shepard.  Dude is amazing!  OK, I'm not just talking about his skills either.  He's just a fun kid.  He has a myspace page and every day or so he updates his "Favorite" team.  From the day he created it, it was Texas.  With a VY highlight reel.  Then he changed it to a&m.  Then Florida.  After that, the guys on Orangebloods.com caught on that he was just having fun with the recruiting process.  Then a thread broke open about where he should say is his favorite next.  The concensus was Boise State because they beat OU and that would just be hillarious.  Guess who was next.  BSU!  Then he highjacked another users account (apparently a friend) and posted to everyone online.  The title of his thread was "Wats up... It's Russell Shepard.  Hook 'em all the way"  It was confirmed that it was him and not someone pretending to be him, and he seems like a genuinely good kid.  I can't wait to see him in Burnt Orange!

Shepard
Isn't he an '09 guy?  Isn't this the guy everyone and their dog is going to be recruiting next year?

Yes
Forgot to mention that.

This Brewster kid is awesome,...
He's definitely a 5* S/DB.  Those who remember John Lynch of the Denver Broncos know that he was a real "head hunter".  For what it's worth, Lynch is Brewster's hero and the kid definitely loves to hit!!  GREAT pick-up for the HORNS!!!

I believe we now have verbals from the following potential 5* recruits for 2008.  Feel free to correct any mistakes or add updates.

  1.  David Snow  - - OL
  2.  Dan Buckner - - WR
  3.  Ryan Roberson - SLB
  4.  Jeremy Hills  - RB
  5.  Tre Newton  - - RB
  6.  Nolan Brewster- S/DB
* I think Aaron Williams, one of the three CB commits, will be a 5 before the 2008 FB season ends.  We'll see,...

As "GoHorns" stated, the Katoa kid is definitely a HORN if Mack offers, and...  I understand that Coach Mack did make that offer yesterday.  Now, if we land DeSean Hales(WR) and Chancey Aghayere(DE), we're difinitely set.  Daniel Campbell would be an added plus.  As far as the Arthur Brown and Russell Shepard kids, I have to do some "catching up" on them.  Good info,...

No official offer yet
Macks policy is they have to meet face to face first.  He is scheduling a visit for the spring game so it's very likely he will get an offer at that point.  For now, the defensive coaches have approved him for a scholarship, but he has not received the official offer yet.

I hope that clears it up.

We're on the same page GoHorns,...
and thanks for the clarification.  I wasn't aware of Mack's "face-to-face" policy for commits, so thanks for the info.  My guess is that Katoa becomes commit #18 the weekend of the Spring game,... if not earlier.

What's the best way for putting "a bug" in the coaching staff's ears regarding this Arthur Brown kid out of KS?  The UT recruiting staff does an outstanding job every year.  Still, it seems there are always a few, very solid recruits, that manage to fly under the radar.  Jamaal Charles is a good example.  Fortunately, the HORNS got Jamaal, but I don't recall him being highly recruited.  He was simply "dangling out there".

Oh
And I'm not so sure that Roberson, Hills, or Newton will be 5 stars.  They will probably be very high 4 stars, with a 5th being a slight possibility.

Correction regarding Aaron Williams,...
being a potential 5* before the end of the (2007!!) football season,... not 2008.  My bad!!
