Billy G to take his grimace to Fayetteville?
Oh my. Heath out at Arkie. They're eyeing Gillespie... big time.
According to the same sources, Heath will likely be replaced by Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie. One source even maintained that Gillispie has agreed in principle and could be introduced as soon as Monday.

I never break stories anymore
I was just about to post something, but you guys are always too fast.
Anyway, this is interesting for a lot of reasons. Most notably, it's hard to imagine the Piggies letting Heath go right this second without something already in place.
BG to Fayeteville? Oh, my...
'edit diary' isn't working
maybe its just me though...

Problems
I'm unable to display comments in Firefox. When I click on the story/diary, I just receive a blank screen. Works ok in IE though.
That's strange
I ONLY use Firefox...
Might be something on your end? Any other Firefox users experiencing problems?

Weird
This story has been exploding over night on Ags and Pigs websites. The same time this starting picking up steams this afternoon both the Dallas Mornnig News and Houston Chronicle quickly put stories up the Texas A&M Board of Regents are having a Thursday and Friday meeting and Billy Gillespie's contract status has been quickly added to the agenda. Apparently they are voting on a very lucractive contract extension. This one will be fun to watch.

How will College Station
compete with Wal-Mart money?
They'll need to sell the patent on sheep cloning to find the scratch for a new Billy G contract.
The SEC is putting up obscene amounts of money for college coaches these days. Just wait until Kentucky breaks the bank an hires their new coach. If it is in fact Donovan, he'll be the highest paid b-ball coach 3 times over.
I'm not sure what the appeal to Billy G is. He isn't gonna be second fiddle in Texas anymore, but he'll be first fiddle in a state that needs to import talent. I guess you could argue they at least have proven they can win an NCat Arkie, with Big shot Bob Horry and co.
Sorry,
but Horry played at Alabama. He would be leaving for a higher profile job and lots more money so it would not surprise me at all if he is in Fayetteville by sundown.
Damn....that's right
But didn't they win an NC in the early 90's?
I knew the Bob Horry reference didn't sound quite right.
They tried to repeat
They lost in the finals to UCLA the following year as well. Arkansas has better facilities for basketball than does A&M and an even crazier/ more rabid fan base.
Can Gillespie recruit Memphis? That's where Nolan built his late 80's teams.
Not Horry
Their guy was Corlis Williamson

Whats the difference?
Besides 1 NC, the Arkansas job and the A&M jobs are basically the same gig, except I think BG would be taking a step back by going to Fayetteville. I think he stays at A&M. I just don't see him trying to elevate Arkie when he has already gone through that rebuilding step at A&M. Now the Kentucky job...that is a different story.

Ironically
the guy Arkie just fired has gone deeper in to the NCAA's than Billy G.
We all know Billy G is a great coach, but has he really proven to be worth this kind of tongue bath?
Heath looked like a sure thing, came in when the program was a mess from the Nolan scandals -- and was never really able to show anything for it.
IMO, they should have given him more time, before doubling down on the next flavor of the month.
Ironic...
... would be BCG going from coaching guys who violate pigs to coaching pigs who violate probation.

Arkansas athletics are in a death spiral
This, combined with Nutt's travails and the end of the Broyles' era, spells a couple of years in the wilderness for the Arkansas faithful. Combined with a general inability to decipher basic map symbols (or letters) or use tools like a compass (or fire), it might be painful for them. Teehee!
I dont know
It seems like you'll never be "the team" in Texas if you're at A&M.
At Arkansas, for better or for worse, all eyes are on you.
Plus Arkansas has some rich bball history.
Billy could just be leveraging for more $.

This is also the case...
For Tech and Baylor. You almost have to feel sorry for all of them.
by DanDaMan on Mar 26, 2007 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions
True
but Tech, for the most part, is okay with their role as second fiddle/ spoiler. They know they'll never be on par with Texas, mainly because they dont have the resources.
A&M, on the other hand, has the resources, but will always be in the shadow of UT.

Agreed
Billy won't go to Arky. But Ku......... Let's just say aggy's had better watch out.

Is it a trade
A&M got Blair to coach women's bball and Arkansas gets Gillespie in return?
