Gillispie staying at A&M
"Texas A&M appears poised to retain Billy Gillispie as men's basketball coach and make him the highest paid among his Big 12 peers, according to media reports in Texas.
The Houston Chronicle, which cited three high-ranking officials both in and close to the A&M system, reported athletic director Bill Byrne and Gillispie have verbally agreed to a deal that would pay him about $2 million annually."
So no Arkansas for BCG

Seems like a lot to pay a guy who's best finish was the Sweet 16. My magic 8 ball is seeing some raises forthcoming for Self and Barnes...

awesome!
They really deserve such a d-bag smirk-face!
As jc25 alludes to
What has Gillspie really done? I am not saying he is a bad coach, but is he really worth the hype he is getting?
In three years he has improved a team that was in the dregs before him, has made it to the NCAAs twice, once exceeding expectations by beating Syracuse and then losing a close one to LSU, and then the next year losing earlier than expected in what was almost a home game against Memphis.
In his three years he has averaged about a 70% winning percentage, about equivalent with Barnes, although until this year the early season scheduling has been a little lax. Plus Barnes has done that over 9 seasons, lets see how Billy does with a young team next year.
its kind of like what happened in baseball
this offseason. Things got out of control and people were paid more than their value because the market got ridiculous. A&M had to shell it out or lose him. That is why you have Gil Meche or Ted Lilly making 10 mil a year without the resume to back it. Same for Chickenwings. Blame it on Arkansas and Kentucky.

It's pretty
clear when or if he tastes real succes he'll just bolt for a better program. They'd be better of just burning a pile of cash than throwing more money at him. Anybody who doesn't believe that is living in oblivion. The only reason he's staying is to buy time for a better opportunity (Kentucky). He holds all the cards and can make them hop on one leg and bark like a dog all he wants. The only reason people know A&M even HAS a b-ball team is because of him.
According to a recent NY Times article (yes, I read their sports) he has jumped jobs 10 times in 19 years. He isn't married, works around the clock -- and will never have any personal ties to a University. The only thing Billy cares about is Billy. I'm not saying that's wrong, but he is clearly a professional career climber.
if that's true,
why didn't he leave for Indiana last year? it would obviously been a step up from A&M.
He was offered the Indiana job?
I don't remember hearing that, at all.
After last year's tourney run
S.A. Paper - Gillispie turned down IU and NC State
"Hoosiers' Daddy?: The A&M men's and women's basketball teams kickoff (sorry) their season on Friday night at Reed Arena. Both are ranked in the top 25.
And talk about loyalty, Aggies: Word is traditional power Indiana, in searching for a basketball coach last off-season, came knocking on A&M men's coach Billy Gillispie's door for at least an interview. Not once but twice.
Gillispie, in receiving reassurances about upgrades to Reed, didn't answer. Twice. He also turned away a persistent if not downright pushy North Carolina State. Gillispie, a native Texan, believes A&M's got what it takes to someday (and maybe soon) play for the national title.
Considering the Aggies were one shot shy of making the Sweet 16 last year in only Gillispie's second season, plenty of others believe that, as well. Indiana wound up hiring OU coach Kelvin Sampson, by the way. Hey, at least that's a victory for the Aggies over the Sooners, right?"
May or may not be true
they are reporting hearsay. It's also one of the papers that reported him campaigning for the Kentucky job. So who knows what the truth is. Living in BIG 10 country I don't ever remember his name being mentioned. Who knows?
They only asked him for an interview, they didn't offer. Big difference.
whatever they did/didn't do
they were interested, and Billy didn't leave. I don't know what you are trying to argue. Is it:
Billy is not good enough to be offered the job at Indiana/Kentucky/Basketball University?
or
Billy is so good, there is no way A&M can keep him?
please pick a side.
I just don't think the story has
as much weight as the Arkie story, because typically the coach uses that as leverage for a raise. If Indiana truly had an interest in Billy, Aggie would have to make a move to keep him, like with Arkie.
not as much information
but what do you expect from an incompetent organization like the Arkansas athletic department?
It was pretty well known in Aggieland and Indiana how hot the IU program was for BCG. But any respectable program is not going to let themselves look like fools when they don't get one of their top choices. that's why well-run organizations don't let so much information get out.
And i believe that Billy did get some sort of raise last spring. But he also used the opportunity to help out the whole program, from his assistants to facilities, not just himself. i think the school of thought that 'Billy is only out for himself' is seriously flawed. he is all about creating a situation that allows him to be competitive and achieve his goal - winning at the highest level.
and
what job has he previously had that would have been considered a good job?
Kentucky, Florida and maybe a few other teams
would be considered a step up from Aggie.
I can even admit that a few programs are a step up from Texas, because of their tradition and basketball centric fans.
College Station fans are in complete denial if they think Billy G doesn't have a wandering eye.
Why would your AD offer him a new contract if they didn't think the threat of him leaving was serious?
i know
...there are better jobs than A&M.
what i'm asking is what previous job would a coach of BCG's talent consider worth staying at?
Of course you are going to change jobs if your current job will not allow you achieve your goals. if Gillispie is in fact staying at A&M, it is clear that he thinks he can do some damage at poor ol A&M.
and you give a guy a new contract when he earns it. last year he turned down a raise so that the money could be spent on his assistants and on new facilities. this year, its his turn to wet his beak.
I was with you until
"you give a guy a new contract when he earns it"
That sounds like denial of the situation.
Arkansas was flirting with Billy G, so Aggie put on some lip gloss, hose, a slutty dress and gave him a hefty raise. They didn't want BG to leave them for a girl with a larger rack.
The new contract was not entirely a merit increase. It didn't materialize until Billy used his new suitors as leverage for higher compensation.
Arkie fires their coach, they go after Billy G and two days later A&M calls an ad hoc meeting of the board to approve a raise.
Even if he did deserve more money it is immaterial. It was a bidding war to keep him, not pure compensation.
Not a big deal. They realized he was going to be in demand, so they up the anti to keep him.
did you care this much
...when barnes flirted with NC State last year and got a raise out of it?
No
and I didn't deny what happened by labeling it "compensation", just another day in the neighborhood.
The market value for Rick had gone up, plus he had earned it.
I just think it's funny reading Aggies try to pass it off as, "well, we were gonna give him a raise anyways".
BS, he held your feet to the fire, holds all the cards, so you bumped him up. If you hand't he'd be shouting pig sooey right now.
pardon my french
...but who gives a $hit what its called. barnes did it. billy's doing it. donovan's doing it.
we are all aware of what's going on. and from where i'm sitting, Billy has earned every dollar he is getting paid.
Like I said "wandering eye"
http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/b...
"Gillispie balks at A&M deal"
"At the end of another bizarre day in Texas A&M's quest to lock down basketball coach Billy Gillispie, school officials delayed an announcement of a new contract agreement after receiving indications from Gillispie that he wants to keep open his options for the most tantalizing of current job openings — Kentucky. "
wow
this is getting really, really weird.
ba da ba ba ba, I'm lovin it.

for anyone still paying attention
new development - Billy Gillispie Agrees to New Contract
I know he hasn't signed anything yet, but it does seem like he is pleased with the current situation. i am just hoping that kentucky gets donovan and stays away from billy.
Apparently
Kentucky's wish list is:
- Donovan
- Billy G/ Jay Wright
Some think they'll go to Izzo, Barnes and Calipari after Donovan -- but I think they've already taken their names out.
Somebody would have to take the Florida job if Donovan leaves. I wouldn't cross anyone off the list if that happens, Billy G included.
nice
Basketball in the state of Texas has been a one horse race since, well, phi slamma jamma?
Hopefully Gillispie can continue to make things interesting in College Station. I think that can only help us at Texas in raising the level of excitement around the sport.
Whether or not he's a good coach doesnt really matter at this point for a&m. They'll have to deal with that in 3-5 years. Right now they can just ride that wave of enthusiasm until they quit exceeding expectations.

in my opinion
it is well worth it. A&M's athletic department/donors can well afford to pay Gillispie anywhere between $1.5-2 mil (the exact amount is probably still unknown). I believe BCG has done more than enough to prove that he is at top (along with Barnes and Self) of the Big XII and deserves to be paid the going rate.
The question shouldn't be "is a coach worth X dollars?" but rather "is X dollars worth watching your coach leave?" and i think in the case of Gillispie and A&M hoops, retaining our coach is of the utmost importance.
How would you feel if Texas let Barnes walk to another school over $200,000 per year? It would be stupid for a big school to get cheap when it comes to keeping a good thing going.
I really think the finger-pointing starts with big-time programs thinking they can throw money at all of their problems. Starting with Saban/Bama last year and Donovan/Kentucky this year, i have a feeling the price to play poker is gonna jump significantly.
Good for aggieland
I personally am thrilled that Ol' Chickenwings McWhinyPants is staying to coach the ags for years to come. It makes it all that much easier to hate a school when they have a giant steaming turd for a coach.
My favorite thing to do during football season is to listen to Bobby Stoop's postgame fingerpoint and whinefest after a land theif loss. I hate the sooners but them having Bobby Visor makes it that much more satisfying to beat them.
Billy Gilespie or BCG as our aggie friends call him is a loser of a person. He is a giant shining example of poor sportsmanship and bad decision making (DUI). I hope he keeps his ridiculous screaming and wing flapping in college station for many years to come. That way when some ag gives me some bullshit speech about the integrity and honor of aggieland I can picture Billy flapping away on the sidelines in my head.

Billy came to A&M
when it was literally a "coaching suicide" and turned it around. Completely. We all know the headlines. He is a native texan, he knows all the high school coaches, and he is a great recruiter in texas. None of us know him, thus we really don't know what he'll do. Maybe he'll basically jump at a job like Kentucky. Maybe he wants to stay at A&M. It wouldn't be an awful idea. The school will basically give him whatever he wants at a moments notice.(upgrades, salary, etc.) Some people think that when Law leaves the program will die and he will want to get out now. He's finally got his recruits in. He just got the #1 recruit in texas for next year. I'm not saying he's going to stay, but he's got reason to. What makes Kentucky or Arkansas a better job? The status? The recruiting help. He's single, no kids, no life. He does drive an escalade though. Once he's making 2 million a year plus whatever, does he really need more money?
Everybody wants more money
The argument, does he really need more money, does not really hold water for me. Did Billy G turn commie when I was not looking? Is he Buddhist and worldly possessions mean nothing to him?
As for why Kentucky is a better job, it has more tradition, better fans, better national exposure, and Ashly Judd, which all translate into better recruiting and a better shot at winning the national championship.
As for why Arkansas is better, I have no idea. At least A&M is still in Texas.
