No, not that Young. Terrance Young. The former offensive lineman.

Yes, some lucky bidder is going to be in possession of a "Young" inscribed 2005 national title ring when this auction comes to a close. So far the bidding is up to nearly $10,000, which puts it just a touch over what I had budgeted ($7,500) for the first title ring that became available.

Still, I strongly urge those of you with deeper pockets than me to get in on the action. After all, as the seller notes, "This is as close as you'll ever get to owning Vince Young's national title ring."

When you look at it that way... hey, maybe it's a bargain.

If, though, you're like me and this particular item is just out of your price range, don't fret - there are other items you can purchase that might make you more like Vince.

i would totally buy this if this auction happened in a year or so. as it is...$180k in debt and no source of income.

Possibly fake?

Terrance was not on the roster in 2005! How come a player not even on the 100+ roster gets a ring? He was on the roster his first two years and did get some playing time, but not in 2004 and 2005.

Young was derailed by injuries, but remained around the team and a part of the 2005 team in a supportive capacity. The Longhorns would definitely give him a ring, even though he wasn't active to play.

I've heard the AD is pretty clear with players

They let players know all privileges and ties to the University are severed if you sell your ring. Ex-players lose tickets, reunion invites, and networking benefits if they try to cash in and pawn MNC hardware.

He must really need the money.

i'm really surprised

that more people don't think this is really sad and disrespectful to the program. so many people work so hard to try to be a part of it and bring it the success that this ring represents and he's pawning it off like it's a cheap trinket. shouldn't the term "invaluable" apply here? of course, i just don't understand people that dish out these big bucks on momentos that signify nothing about what i accomplished as a person. that's just me, though.

Agree in Part, Disagree in Part

I agree that spending 10K on this ring is pretty meaningless to purchasor because a ring usually symbolizes something person i.e. graduation, marriage, religion, etc.

I disagree that he is being disrespectful to the program and pawning it off a trinket. I'd be willing to bet that he is in a precarious financial situation where he needs the money more than the ring.

Inno-cents lost

My initial reaction after reading this story was of blasphemy like many others. I was fortunate enough to pocket a couple of conf. championship rings during my time at UT and I know the sentimental value of those rings far exceeds the actual value as someone mentioned above.

Like you, I also try not to judge as I'm not familiar with this guy's situation and no doubt there could be some financial hardships involved.

Even still, I can't see $10k being worth it...it's nothing to shake a stick at but it's not life-changing money. In my mind, selling this ring is sort of like making the decision to forgo the remainder of your college years and enter the pro draft. If you're going to be set for life financially, then you do it. If not, you stay, because you can't ever get your innocence back and he won't ever get that ring back.

Maybe someone like VY will step in a buy the ring like an OU grad did when Billy Simms put his Heisman Trophies up for sale. I think that would be a good resolution to this situation.

Then again, maybe we'll find out this another Miss America sting operation to poach pedophiles posing as Class Ring salesmen...you remember those dudes that hung out at the lunchroom with a briefcase attached to their wrist...tell me they're not shady.

since I made my Pageant crusade public on Friday, Feb 02, 2007 at 03:10:09 PM EDT.

At this point, I'm sort of like the Terry Fox of Pageant references. He was the one-legged guy who tried to run across Canada. And while I'm not exactly raising awareness for the fight against cancer, I am shinning some much needed light on the underappreciated world of beauty pageants (and KD going pro only strengthened my resolve).

Will I make it to next football season without forgetting to lace a BON comment with an enigmatic pageant reference? I don't know. Terry didn't make it across Canada. (I think he made it to Saskatchewan and said, "fuck this, I should have run across Rhode Island.") But that wasn't the point. He ran and because he ran, he won. So you see, I've already won in a very twisted come walk around on the ledge of my subconsciousness sort of way.

And that's what it's all about: winning (even if you're the only one who thinks you won). I think it was Miss Cuervo Gold who put it best, "Hey Chacho, I didn't come all this way to puke for nothing." Truer words have never been spoken...though "watch out for Jell-o shots" is a close second.
