Billy Gillispie To Kentucky
I have it from exactly no one that this is going to happen. . . so don't quote me.
Or do! I'm giddy as a schoolgirl that Rick Barnes is staying at Texas, and even giddier about the prospects of BCG heading to Lexington. I may have been joking that it's some sort of done deal, but I'm not kidding at all when I say that I believe wholeheartedly that he's going to be offered the job and will take it. AW and I just got off the phone, and here's how our conversation went:
AW: We dodged a bullet there, didn't we?
PB: Oh my God yes. Can you imagine the fallout from Rick leaving?
AW: I was just thinking about that. Kevin clearly leaves for the pros. Augustin probably dips his feet in the water. Gary Johnson takes a close look and says, "Um, maybe not Texas." Talk about a freefall.
PB: Exactly. We dodged a major bullet here. And you know what's even better about all this?
AW: A&M?
PB: Yup. A&M. Billy Clyde Gillispie, please move to the front of the class. And carry out that scenario to its logical extension. Gillispie leaves A&M along with Law and Kavislutkus. Deandre Jordan asks himself, "Do I want to go to Podunk U or head to Lexington with BCG?" Which is no question at all. Texas A&M's program crashes and burns as spectacularly as it rose to prominence. Icarus, I tell you! ICARUS!
AW: Don't forget: Gillispie's being a single man - which the Agros loved so much - makes his moving all the easier. No kids. No schools. No ties in the area to keep him down.
PB: Absolutely. As soon as he can confirm that they sell liquor in Lexington, he's going to be asking Mitch Barnhardt, "Are we signing this contract in duplicate? Or triplicate?"
AW: Goodbye to Texas... A&M... University.
PB: It's been fun, Aggies.

And here...
"At the end of a whirlwind Thursday that began with a rebuff from Billy Donovan and included Rick Barnes withdrawing his name from consideration, Kentucky has locked in on Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie as its top candidate to replace Tubby Smith.
If negotiations proceed smoothly, Gillispie could be introduced as the new coach of the Wildcats very soon -- perhaps as early as Friday.
Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart asked for and received permission to talk to Gillispie on Thursday night, according to Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne."

I beg to differ
The decline of the A&M program would be bad for the conference and bad for the Longhorns. After all, the rivalry with the Aggies is one of the things that makes it fun to be Texas fan. And until recently, their pathetic showing in hoops was depriving us of some of that.
So lets hope that they make a good hire, keep the program on track, and continue to be a worthy opponent. Remember, there's something better than a victory over A&M -- an upset victory.

BCG
Well it looks like Billy headed to Cali today to meet with the UK folks. Most of the Ags are writing this off as a done deal.
Right now the names on the list are Reggie Theus, SoIll coach, Doc Sadler, Winthrop HC....
Maybe he will turn UK down? One can dream, right?

Writing the A&M program off...
Is a mistake at this point. The money is being invested the facilities are being built and the potential is already evident.
Given A&M hires the right coach(you cant replace BCG) it shouldnt be that much of a dropoff because the pieces are already in place.

Some new development is popping up ten minutes later. Anyways, I think this is fantastic news from Kentucky's point of view...I felt from the beginning that Gillispie was their best fit. As much as I love schaedenfraude
or however it's spelled, things are more fun for us when A&M is 13-3 in conference vs 0-16.
I hate their fans and think they deserve 0-16, but I feel like it helps us to have another basketball benchmark to surpass that's not in the the state of Oklahoma or Kansas.
Oh well. The German in me is loving this.

Buffaloes get a coach
The head man from Air Force takes the thankless job of rebuilding that program.
"He left Air Force to take over as basketball coach at the University of Colorado on Wednesday, the latest in a series of career challenges he's undertaken up and down the Rocky Mountain front range.
"I get excited by great, great challenges," said Bzdelik, who was 50-16 at Air Force after a 2½-year stint as coach of the Denver Nuggets, whom he led to the playoffs for the first time in a decade in 2004."

So back to reality
After you get over the jubilation from the news that Rick is staying (which made me feel like a hundred dollars!), and all of the dancing, pointing, and laughing at our in-state little brothers, you must deal with the facts that BCG and Huggins are leaving. And they are leaving the conference.
What does this mean for us? Huggins had the number 1 recruiting class in the country, with the rivals #1 player and #7 player coming next year. Do they release those guys? How about A&M's recruits? Are these guys out there again? Any chance that any of them come to Austin?
Or does this not really affect us at all next year? Except maybe that the Big 12 conference may have just weakened tremendously.
Thoughts?

BG
I could care less who coaches competing conference schools in any sport. It is fun to watch the Ag insecurities in just about everyting they do but BG leaving is a non-event for me. Rick staying is huge. That is what matters.
It will be interesting to see how those high profile recruits get out of their commitments in Manhattan. Huggins was the one and only reason they pledged to go to a school in the middle of nowhere.

ESPN- Barnes and UK
It seems based on what the ESPN guys are saying it seems that Barnes contacted UK but wasnt offered. Barnes was using it either as a move to get more money or he wanted to go to UK and was turned down.
Based on what A&M sources are saying BCG changed flight plans late yesterday Morning at the last minute, we assume to meet with UK Reps. The Barnes thing was just a farce.
by HMFIC on Apr 6, 2007 10:24 AM CDT 0 recs
I find that hard to believe ...
The DMN is reporting that Kentucky had been hounding Barnes for a week as plan B behind Donovan. Dick Vitale reported yesterday that Rick was No. 2 behind the Florida coach as well. In fact, it's been reported widely that he was next in line.
Couldn't this new spin be some face-saving by the UK athletic department, which didn't want to admit being turned down twice?

Don't think so
Katz and Fox Sports are both reporting that Barnes may have been their first choice all along.
According to the news this morning BG is in LA and never changed his travel plans, at all.
BG has been campaigning for this. Barnes and Donovan have ideal situations and don't want to deal with the booster baloney at Kentucky.

According the local Aggie rag
"Gillispie was unavailable for comment Thursday night. Killian said he was on a flight to Los Angeles, where he's scheduled on Saturday to attend the John Wooden Player of the Year Award luncheon along with Aggie senior Acie Law IV, one of five finalists."
Sounds like the midnight cabal with Kentucky story is false.
So much for "Aggie sources" with the inside scoop. Maybe the Billy Gillespie in LA is a decoy cardboard cutout or maybe BG has an identical twin.

It doesn't matter if a formal offer was made
Barnes was their #2, but he wasn't interested so they moved on to BG.
I've been asked before by colleagues if I'm "interested" in such and such position, but it doesn't mean the offer exists. They are just gauging my interested, which I imagine happened to Barnes. It also saves Kentucky from a formal rejection.
Kentucky needed to go after someone they KNEW would take the job.

yeah.
Andy Katz, who is actually reliable, just said on ESPN News that Kentucky wasn't going to do a dance anymore after Donovan and so they first wanted to gauge Barnes' interest. When barnes said he was staying at Texas, Kentucky didn't push it and instead then went after Gillispie.

Rick's Staying
I was despondent at the scenario yesterday of Rick likely leaving and the inevitable departure by Kevin. I stayed awake all last night worrying. Any shot at getting DeAndre Jordan?
Now that BCG's gone to UK, Jordan could follow him... or maybe he wants to stay near Texas. If KD returns, any chance Jordan may want to play here? I don't know all these things work with scholarships and such.
Hypothetically, could you imagine how much we'd improve our front court (especially on defense)? Pittman, Gary Johnson, and Jordan to help out James and Durant in the paint.

Jordan
would need to get a release from his letter of intent to A&M. Think Damion James to OU last season. After Samson left, the school did the honorable thing, in my mind, and released their signees. Three of them, including James to Texas and Scottie Reynolds to Villanova, went elsewhere.
I fully expect A&M to release Jordan, if he asks for it, and their other incoming freshman as well.
Kentucky has plenty of scholarships available. So, Jordan to Kentucky is a likely scenario.
Jordan to Texas is not a likely scenario. If Durant stays and Balbay qualifies, then the Horns would already be one scholarship over the limit.
Even if Durant turns pro, I would be shocked if Jordan ended up in Austin.

Gillispie should be more concerned...
with wooing Patrick Patterson. Not that Jordan wouldn't help...the Wildcat frontcourt is going to be abysmal with Morris, Perry, Thomas and Woo leaving.
Their only returning big man with any substance is Perry Stevenson, and rumor has it that Tubby wasn't a fan because Stevenson was so ambivalent in practices.
They definitely have a solid returning backcourt of Crawford (really good driver, shaky shooter, strong upper body), Bradley (great shot but no point guard skills), and Jasper (can't shoot a lick, but long, good rebounder and defender). My favorite though is Jodie Meeks, who could be Gillispie's Acie Law in a couple of years. He's a great athlete, good jumper, and hard-nosed. He has some problems in traffic right now, though, but Tubby was envisioning him as a hard-working 4-year starter, along the lines of Chuck Hayes.
Sorry about the long comment, but if you can't tell, I'm excited about the Gillispie/Kentucky era.

I would be surprised if Jai Lucas ends up in Lexington, but I could be wrong. I think Lucas ends up in Stillwater.
