BBQ Texas - Iowa State's Golden Rule
Well, last year ISU had a promotion against Nebraska where gold shirts were given away to students that said "GOLDEN RULES" on the front and "BEAT NEBRASKA" on the back.
Well, this year's version focuses on the Horns. I have to imagine this has something to do with Gene, but, hey, I guess we're gunning for you guys this year, cause after all, we did pull off a fake punt last time.

Looking forward to a good game this fall. We're still madly in love with Gene up here, at least til 4 minutes into the season opener.

Huh
Has the fourth quarter of the last game even started yet?
A little lightning thirty miles away shut down the Texas offense last year. I'd hate to see what kind of effect a carefully coordinated t-shirt campaign will have.

A little lightning
Were you at the game? I know the lightning was far away but damn it looked ominous to the north. Does anyone remember how freaking hot it was that day? Maybe it was just section 127 (beautiful, beautiful section 127), but I swear I still have the sandal tan lines from the ISU game.

I was there
I spent the third quarter wondering when they were going to get the kids off of the field. It turned out to be lightning pretty far away, but I agree that it seemed much worse in the stadium. We didn't get sun in section 1. We only get pigeon crap in section 1.

Well
We played you guys totally even except for when we didn't last year, so we've got that too. Throw in t-shirts, and you guys best watch out.

Also:
When playing ISU, watch out for:
-Thunderstorms
-Midwestern work ethic
-Leg whippings

Midwestern Storms
It was terrifying watching the storms slowly move in like impending doom over the lakes when I lived in Madison. Those storms are insane.

truf
I lived in Indiana for the better part of 17/20ths of my life and those storms got insane. Does anybody else from the midwest remember when the clouds turned a really eerie green color and bumps formed under them? It was always awesome when that happened...it looked so cool that you almost wanted a tornado to form...except that you didn't.

When we played Colorado in 2005
The start of the game was delayed nearly an hour because of a tornado that had touched down in Ames (and tore up the NW part of town). We're undefeated the past two years (2-0) when tornadoes hit Ames. So watch out, I suppose. Lack of talent be damned.

Question about Ames
Do you have any good suggestions for a hotel? The last two games I've just driven home after, but since the weather is so dicey that time of year I'd prefer to just stay the night and pass out.
Last Texas game in Ames was mutha fucking cold, like a Charlie Bronson sequel.
Suggestions?? Anyone??

How far is Ames from Chicago/South Bend?

It's reasonable
I think it's six or seven hours. I often thought about driving to Northeast Iowa for the ABC regional coverage. Watching the Tech game at a sports bar across the street from Camp Randall on homecoming was hell. We had one screen over the middle of a bar in what was essentially a hallway. It was insane us four Texas fans.

Speaking of Camp Randall
I'm going to a game there in mid-september. We go up to Madison often, so I'm familiar with the city.
But what section should I shoot for as a visitor?
Thanks in advance

It depends
The Greenbush on Regent has really good thin crust pizza. The zoo is actually pretty cool, and free. I lived a few blocks from there. If you want the Wisconsin adaptation of Chuy's, then you should go to Tex Tubb's Taco Palace which is on the near east side by the Barrymore. I think it's on Atwood. It's a confusing place, with decent Tex-Mex.
The thing I miss most about Madison is the Ancora coffee. It's the best coffee I've had. There are few of them around town. Feel free to send some to Team LaBlog.
My wife always enjoyed wandering up and down Monroe Street which is very convenient to Camp Randall. It's got little shops, great frozen custard at Michael's and decent New Mexican cuisine at Pasquale's. State Street has an endless supply of places to get beer or food. Paul's Club is my favorite sit down bar. Burraka has good Ethiopian food and the Mediterranean Cafe has good cheap lunches.
Most importantly, stay the night and if the weather is right, hang out at Memorial Terrace and drink beer and eat the best ice cream you'll ever find while you watch the sailboats out on the lake. There's often free live music out there. September should still be pretty nice.
If I didn't know better, I'd think that I miss living in Madison.

Not too far
A little over 5 hours from what I remember, but the weather was really bad last time we drove it. Once you get past Aurora the landscape is wide open and desolate.
From the twin cities of Indiana I would add 45 plus minutes. You just never know what to encounter with the tolls down there. Traveling east from The Bend you get a lot of log jams.
Last time we left really, really early in the morning, drove through a blizzard and froze our asses off at the game. Not fun. Not fun, at all.
I'm rethinking my strategy this time. Maybe an overnighter in Des Moines or Ames or someplace on the Miss....we'll see what the wife is game for.

At least the driving isn't too bad, but
I believe they are working to expand I-80 to three lanes this summer/fall, so that might be something anyone coming in from the east would want to check on.
For anyone driving up from Texas, it's pretty idiot proof. I-35 up to Ames, and then there's signs. Either US 30 or Lincoln Way.

Depends how much you want to pay, but...
on the South part of town, you'll find most of the hotels, on US 30. The Country Inn isn't bad. For a fancier place, there is the Gateway Center, which is also on the southern part of town. You could stay on campus at the Memorial Union as well, but that's typically filled up. The earlier you can reserve, the better. There is also a Holiday Inn Express which I've stayed at a few times that is good. Most of the name brand hotels there are pretty clean and pretty new.
