Greatest Run in Longhorn History?
A reader over on EDSBS referred to a particular play as "considered by many to be the greatest run in Colorado history".
That lead me to wonder what the BON believes is the greatest run in Texas Longhorn history. The first couple that came to my mind were Ricky's record-breaker (for sentimental and Ag-bashing reasons) and more recently, the pair of 80-yarders by The Almighty VY and Jamaal Charles. I don't think I have a preference, but it seems like a good off-season, non-Barry Bonds related thread-starter...
What say you, BON?

I did enjoy Ricky's record breaker though.

Ok, it was a dumb question
But how about great non-VY runs?
by Kahuna on May 16, 2007 4:19 PM CDT 0 recs
great runs
Vince had some nice runs in both Rose Bowls... that 4th & 18 against Kansas merits legendary status. 3rd & 30 against Oklahoma State (I think). The list goes on, but in the non-VY category...
Jamaal 80-yarder vs. OU?
Priest Holmes breaking loose vs. Nebraska?
I'm trying to think of a noteworthy Cedric Benson run, but it seems like he just pounded down the middle for 3-5 yards every play.
How about the Matt Nordgren run where he fumbled the ball then recovered it off the bounce without breaking stride?
Probably a bunch pre-1990s that I never saw...

Ricky
For me my favorite player has always been Ricky and watching that record breaking run has been my favorite moment as a longhorn fan (outside of winning a NC)

Any of about 50.....
of Earl Campbell's greatest runs. Of course you young pups are too young to have known greatness.
by HornChamps on May 17, 2007 12:04 AM CDT 0 recs
Seriously
That wins the Crotchety Old Guy Comment of the Year.
For one thing, even us younger fans know Campbell's greatness.
For another, to suggest Ricky and VY aren't in the same conversation as Campbell is laughable.
Your comments alternate between ones that make me nod my head in agreement, and ones that make me roll my eyes in frustration. You should try not putting down the rest of us all the time.

Already?
Seriously I thought I had a great chance at Crotchety Old Guy Comment of the Year, hell it's still only May. I was going to mention Bohn Hillard's 1934 run against Texas Tech of 94 yards. That was back before all the fancy smancy pads and helmets you young whippersanppers have now. Back in my day real men played football, not like you young don't hit the QB pantywaists. And coke only cost a nickle, and gas was 25 cents a gallon and I didn't even own shoes, I just tied pieces of old tire to my feet and I was happy to have them. You youngins today is soft I tell ya.

Top 3
My top 3, easily, have to be the VY championship run, Ricky's record breaker and Earl carrying the defender into the end zone.
Good memories, Hook'em!!!

VY 70 yarder against Okie State
OSU controlled the first half, but that run down the sidelines left me the only person jumping and cheering in the OSU student section!

Of course, I wasn't up at 3:36:35 AM EST.
The Jammal Charles 80 yarder against OU was damn impressive. He was a true freshman. Nice welcome to the red river shootout.

that I'd sell my friendship for. That run was the brightest example of how that year's team was fated for greatness...

highlight video
Hi there, my first post to this site. I've been reading a long time and decided to join and post. Anyways, thought I'd contribute right away. I found this video of highlights of all the games of the 2005 season, the Matt Nordgren bounce pass to himself TD is at roughly the 9:17 mark. It is a large file though at over 120mb.

Ricky destroying Mississippi State
I got a lot of pleasure out of a couple of Ricky's runs vs. Jackie Sherrill and Mississippi State in 1999 Cotton Bowl. I am pretty sure he knocked out two of their safeties and maybe breaking one of their ribs. Smashmouth
by MMHorns on May 17, 2007 9:34 AM CDT 0 recs
Miss State......
I'm w/ MMHorns, those runs in the '99 Coton Bowl were classic. To hell w/ the two safties, I think Ricky ran over every person on defense at least once in that game. Actually, I think Ricky ran over the two safties on the same run. I have to see those runs from time to time to remind me how awesome Ricky really was. You can't name many schools that have better rushers that what we've had at the 40 acres. Name em......

hate to be a party pooper...
but USC probably has us beat in the "great rushers" game. they have five heisman winning running backs. the heisman isn't everything...but's it's certainly something...

USC does have a good history of running backs.
In the schools who's running backs have not committed murder and then gotten away with it category, is there a team that can compare with UT's running back history?

The only one
I'll admit is USC. They've had a surfeit of great rushers there (yes, I did just look up surfeit to make sure I used it correctly).
That said, I would venture that Earl and Ricky (and even Cedric) make Texas the leader in producing punishing rushers.

Hard to Say
I've been lucky to witness a number of them live: VY at Rose Bowls, Ricky record breaker, etc. But I'm trying to remember exactly one Earl run. It was against U of Houston at Rice Stadium, 1976 I believe. Basically, Bevo was parked a little too close to the end line and Earl smacked into him. Both were no worse for wear. Also, remember Edwin Simmons freshman year run up the middle against OU. We were watching that one on closed circuit at the Astrodome. (I'm dating myself a bit here, older than most BONers, but hopefully still in the game.)
