Athlon 2007 Preseason Ranks
I don't know if anybody has been following this, but Athlon's been rolling out it's preseason poll 1 team at a time.
There are on #5 today (West Virginia) and will count down the remaining four teams throughout the remainder of this week.
Still not listed--USC, Notre Dame, LSU, and Texas. That is my best guess as to who will be in the top 4, although UND and LSU that high baffles me. How do the rest of you see this developing?

USC is 1, Texas is 2. The Domers are unranked. Wisconsin is the somewhat surprising member of the top 4.
Check out the Atlanta Journal Constitution's rankings as well. OU at 3? tOSU at 4? Seems rather high for both teams, me thinks.

I assume
that means LSU is 3? We follow the Tigers pretty closely, and they return a whole lot of talent. LSU is loaded this year and a top-5 ranking is pretty appropriate.

Ja
LSU is absolutely loaded. May be the most talented team in the country.

USC #1....
USC is clearly the pre-season #1 team. The vast, vast majority of pre-season rankings will have them at the #1 spot.
I can't, for the life of me, understand how someone can find Wisconsin to be a "surprise" Top-5 team! Wisconsin went 12-1 last year, finishing the season as the country's #7 football team. Their single loss came at the hands of Michigan in the Big House. This year they get Michigan at home. Ohio State and Penn State aren't near the teams they've been in the recent past. Wisconsin's offense returns 9 starters from a squad that averaged 29+ points per game. P.J. Hill will have a 2,000-yard season in his sights. They return 7 starters from a formidable defense that limited 5 teams to single digit production, including a shutout of SDSU.
I'm looking for USC to play LSU in the National Championship game, though WVU might make the game if LSU slips on that formidable schedule.

Wisconsin
I think Wisconsin may be the most confusing one loss team in recent memory. They had no real memorable wins until they beat Arkansas. They had the kickoff to Penn State which was fun. I think they'll be good this year, but top four seems like a reach, although I do agree that their schedule lends itself to a potentially huge year. They don't play anyone, which means I have zero interesting non-conference games to watch this year until bowl season.

I meant surprising in that
the original poster didn't consider Wisconsin for one of the top five spots.

It's funny
I thought of them, but it was really an afterthought. As good a runner as Hill is, they've done what to deserve a top 4 ranking?

Wisc shouldn't be ranked that high
The BIG 10 seemed a little like a paper tiger conference last year. The top teams managed to avoid playing each other, again -- and they fell flat in the post-season (aside from Wisc).
The thing about putting Wisc that high, is are they really better than the same Michigan team who basically walked all over them? Keeping in mind, Wisc is without a QB who was a 2-3 year starter and the heart of their O-line.
They lost the two most important players on that team.
LSU and Va Tech will have a slingshot to the title game, depending on who wins that matchup early on.
I can see LSU playing in the MNC, but I don't believe USC will get through their schedule. The PAC-10 is just too good this year and Booty is too eratic.

Also note that I wrote
"somewhat surprising" in my original post.

What Makes Texas #2 ?
I can't figure out why anybody thinks Texas is a legit #2 this season. This is a team that narrowly missed ending the season on a three game losing streak (to some very mediocre teams). The OLine is basically gone as is the defensive backfield and two dominant defensive ends. We didn't rush well last year and the defense gave up tons of big plays, and that was WITH all that NFL talent.
If LSU is "loaded" and Wisconsin returns almost the whole team, why aren't they ranked ahead of Texas? Don't get me wrong, I want UT to be great, I just don't see it. Somebody convince me. I think we have our work cut out for us and will have to gel pretty fast to even replicate last year's record.

no one's real sure about the top teams this year
LSU is indeed loaded, but you must remember that they have Les Miles as their coach. That counts for 1 loss right there, especially in the SEC. Wisconsin doesn't have everyone back and even if they did, they certainly didn't prove anything last year other than they could beat bad teams.
And UT's 2-game losing streak at the end of last season was a direct result of an injury to Colt. If you don't assume an injury, then I don't think the offensive struggles in the A&M game should bear at all on this season. This team should be unbelievable on offense. The only question mark is the o-line, but UT is pretty well-stocked in that department. Dockery was a starter before he got hurt, Charlie Tanner and Dallas Griffin are both very good centers (Tanner is probably better, but Griffin has more experience). Tony Hills I think can be as good as Jonathan Scott if he keeps improving. And you have to imagine Ulatoski will improve seeing as he was starting as a redshirt freshman last year. O-line is a position at which UT does an excellent job of developing talent.
On D, I really believe (and I think BON has come to this consensus) that the defensive secondary struggles last year were more a matter of scheme than talent. Chizik didn't like to blitz his linebackers, which was more or less okay until Lokey broke his leg and Robison got hurt, meaning the DL could no longer get much pressure on the QB on its own. this gave QB's more time to pick apart the secondary. at the same time, Chizik didn't trust his linebackers (with good reason...) so he constantly had the safeties peeking into the backfield and getting burned on play action. Also, Marcus Griffin sort of sucks.
Now, with Akina running the defense, the scheme will be different. Word is, he likes to blitz linebackers. This may open up some running lanes if the DL isn't stopping the run well, but it helps the secondary in the sense that the QB doesn't have time to pick them apart. It obviously has its drawbacks in the dump-off pass to the check down receiver over the middle is harder to defend, but it won't expose a young secondary as much.
Anyway, I think Texas will be excellent this year, especially on offense. I withhold judgment on the defense until I can see what talent we have back there, but I don't think last year's struggles can be transferred to this year's squad.
wow, that was long.....

have to agree with you BZ
Although I am a real (sometimes delusional) optimist with Longhorn football, I think that the end of last year was a result of bad scheme and a dash of bad luck. The season will swing with the Linebackers. Killebrew needs to stop playing like a crackbaby, Bobino needs to blitz more (be more involved in the scheme), Sergio will blossom with more playing time and Muck will be healthy. I think a good dose of pressure/expectations on the linebacking corps and a new blitz scheme will go a long way. This is an elite linebacking corps in terms of talent. They just need the right scheme.

Wheeuw, . . .
. . . I feel much better now. I knew all I needed was to hear from an optimist.
I figure Texas will be "good". I just don't know how good. We usually make a run at undefeated. We don't always make it, but it isn't inconceivable. And that's what you have to be to be picked #2. I think it is a recognition of where Mack has the program. People around the country are thinking that Texas is gonna be in the thick of it, year in and year out. Man, what a great feeling!

What I See
I just think it's USC at #1 and then a smorgasbord of teams after that. You can mix and match a lot of programs from #2-10, and have a valid argument why any school shouldn't be #2. In this year's case, it just seems like the gap between 1 and 2 is much larger than the gap between 2 and 10.

Who is AJC?

It took me a minute to figure it out too.
I personally don't feel the Atlanta Journal Constitution quite has the reputation to be represented by an acronym, but hey, that's just me.

That's a lot of disparity
Consensus #1 (USC) which makes sense.
Texas - Anywhere from 2 to 9
OU - From 3 to 10
LSU - from 2 to 6
WVU - 2 to 11
Michigan - 2 to 10
Florida - 4 to 11
I agree with BigTexBD about the "smorgasbord of teams after that (#1)". This just proves that the media agrees with that statement as well.
Other Texas opponents:
Nebraska - 13 to 25
A&M - 18 to 23 (that's the most consistent I've seen other than USC)
TCU - 15 to NR
Ok St. - 25 (in 1 poll), NR in all others.

yeah
the inconsistency between publications is remarkable:
Louisville is anywhere between 9-13, except Fox forgot about them and didnt rank them.
Athlon didn't rank Arkansas, but the others have the, anywhere from 8-16.
UCLA is 9 in Fox, but unranked in Rivals and the AJC.
I realize they are preseason rankings, in May nonetheless, but some of the differences are rather ridiculous.
